One of our top selection criteria for the GC was the ability to devote sufficient manpower to our projects that they could be done in parallel instead of in series. We are "rip the band-aid" off people and would rather have the mess and disruption associated with remodeling for a shorter period of time at a greater intensity than the opposite.
We met and interacted with at least a dozen employees of Henry's as we planned and executed these projects but I am going to concentrate on just two key players in this review: Sue and Randy.
Sue was our designer for the kitchen, bar area and powder room remodeling project. She has a great eye for unseen potential and brought a lot to the table. We looked at a total of 5 different companies and her design work was head & shoulders above even the nearest competitor. Her design included several fixes to issues created when our home was originally built. She increased the storage space in our kitchen through creative uses of formerly wasted space and made sense of everything. The combinations of colors, textures, design cues, etc brought all of these spaces together in a cohesive manner while defining
them as uniquely different. We are a family which actually cooks at home and the functionality of our kitchen has increased remarkably as a result of this project.
Sue was ever-present during the demolition and construction phases. Her approach to design execution was exceptional. She scrutinized everything and adjusted details as challenges appeared. She did a great job of keeping us informed and keeping the job moving forward. In short, she was a delight to work with throughout the project.
Randy was our project foreman. He did an expert job of managing both the Henry's crews and all of the subs/trades involved in our projects. We did not catch even the slightest hint of a hiccup in the production schedule for the job. Randy coordinated with us constantly to ensure the job went as planned and that everything was done perfectly. When we had those "what if?" moments he was able to turn our quirky ideas into reality. He is a true craftsman!
Odd as it may seem given the wholesale disruption to our lives that remodeling about half of the house all at the same time represented, I miss seeing Randy in the morning before heading to work and our chats about how the project was going. He was a joy to have in our home and an absolute professional.
Some say the kitchen is the heart of a home. We love our kitchen and sometimes just stare at it in amazement. I can hardly believe that we own a house with such an amazing space for us to interact as a family.
Note: my wife was the driving force behind the bathroom project. Jen did the design work. We have one of the most amazing master bathrooms I've ever seen in a house worth less than a million dollars.
It started out very well. The staff was very helpful in helping us choose fixtures for our bathroom remodel. They even loaned us two shower heads to use to see if we liked them. Because of this help, I wanted to give them some business (I could have ordered the fixtures from our kitchen & bath contractor or from Amazon). They worked with me on price, since their prices were higher than from the Internet (Amazon.com and Faucet.com) plus I would have to pay tax. We agreed to the price, and they said the fixtures would arrive at their store within two weeks. Three weeks went by with no call from the store. I called them, and they said some of the items had arrived, but some didn't. I asked how long it would be before the other ones would come in, but they couldn't tell me. Another week and a half goes by and no call from the store. These fixtures are made in the US, so from any factory in the US, these items should arrive within a couple of weeks. I called the store again, and again they couldn't tell me when the items would arrive, and they seemed unconcerned about my problem. Those that I spoke to, were much less eager to help me (after the sale) than they were before the sale. The date my contractor needed the items was fast approaching, so I went to the store, picked up the items that had arrived, and got a refund on the ones that hadn't arrived. One of the items that had supposedly arrived wasn't there, and they didn't know that. So for the several items that hadn't arrived after five and a half weeks, I ordered from Amazon and got them in two days (with free Prime shipping).
I would have been much better off letting the contractor order them and let him worry about having everything ready when needed on site for the remodel. This was a frustrating experience for me. Henry Plumbing provided very poor service after the sale.
