"Frankly, I do not understand this customer or her review. Believe she must have other issues going on in her life, and wish her well. For the record, we NEVER guarantee a finish date, nor would our customers want us to. Given that we do not work on new construction, it is not uncommon for us to run into things we could not have anticipated, or for customers wanting us to modify their original request. For some reason, she made it extremely difficult for us to find a time to return (severely limiting available days and hours within the day), and even then she was never there--just her husband. The possible poor quality of our workmanship or the idea that we weren't completing the work were NEVER raised by her husband, who seemed perfectly nice, and seemed to agree that the work was finished, and to their satisfaction. When we sent her the final bill, she refused to pay, which would have breached our very typical, but enforceable contract. We take our responsibilities to our customers VERY seriously, will do almost anything to make them satisfied, and guarantee our work for at least one year. Customers have responsibilities, too, and the vast majority -- in fact, just about everybody -- honors them. Honestly, can't think of anything we could have done better."
Update 1/31/12:
I have not responded to the provider's response until now as my wife took ill and subsequently died just before Christmas. The provider's claim that they were unaware is a bald-faced falsehood. I have the email and phone records to back up my statement. We did not accept the provider's offer of a refund as the damage they caused far exceeded that amount. Further, by accepting their offer my original review would have been expunged from Angie's list. I didn't want that to happen as I feel fellow members should be aware of the truth.
"We were not aware that this customer was waiting for a response from us, and would have offered to send someone out to address his concerns. We had already send someone out previously who spent several hours trying to satisfy this gentlemen, but apparently did not. The techniques our technician used to address the problem are standard practice in our industry and we stand by them -- as a handyman service we do not have the luxury of always being able to work with new parts, because they are often obsolete. But, since he has asked for a refund instead, we will grant him his request."
When the workman arrived, they hadn't passed along the information on the work that I wanted to have done. I went over the work that I needed. He was able to take care of the bathroom fans and the smoke detector. He let me know that they were not really equipped to handle the attic insulation job that I wanted to have done and suggested an alternate contractor who specializes in that type of work. He also let me know that he couldn't safely access the roof to replace a couple of cracked vent hoods. I appreciated the fact that he was up front about what he could or could not safely accomplish since I was dubious about that job anyway.
The workman tried his best to get the bathroom fans working quietly, but no matter how he tried, the fans ended up noisier than I had hoped they would be (we provided the fans). He offered to return to fix or check on any potential installation issues if the fan manufacturer thought it might be an installation problem.
The workman was very friendly, courteous, helpful and fair with the time he spent. He did a good job of cleaning up as he went along with his work.
