I followed up with ServiceMaster and asked them to send someone out to give me a quote in person. The damage wasn't as extensive as originally thought. The water was just on the perimeter of the lower level and no carpet needed to be replaced. Only a minimal amount of the baseboard needed to be pulled. We told the ServiceMaster that we only wanted them to dry out the area and haul away the damaged carpet pad. He quoted between $5-600 and we agreed to their service based on that quote. Subsequently, I was billed for about $3500 for the job even though they performed a fraction of the original estimate. They argued with me over the course of the next 3 months. I said that I would pay the amount that their representative quoted me when he visited the site in person plus the hourly amount they charged to send him. They continued to argue about it. We discussed involving the Attorney General and Better Business Bureau. They settled on the amount I had specified.
