Auto Sales
I submitted my vehicle information on autotrader.com for appraisal to sell it to an auto dealer. I brought the vehicle in and the salesman checked out the vehicle, drove it, noted exterior flaws and entered all of the information to autotrader. Autotrader returned with an offer, my husband accepted it and signed over the title. We were to pick up the check three days later. That day the salesman called to say they did not want to buy the vehicle and that we had misrepresented it on the autotrader website. I insisted that they honor the purchase agreement. The salesman was rude and insulting. I asked to speak to the manager and he said there was not one. I ultimately spoke to someone who is the manager and he reassured me that it was "a misunderstanding or miscommunication". He said he would look into it and get back to me. He called me back a few hours later and explained to me that autotrader had revoked the offer to buy the vehicle and they did not want to buy it. He offered to take the vehicle to auction in a few weeks to see what we could get for it. At this point they have possession of my vehicle and the signed title documents and we have a purchase agreement signed by the salesman. This man said "we don't have purchase agreements". I described it to him and he said "oh, that excel document that Greg prints out?" It said purchase agreement and he had signed it. I continued to insist that he honor the purchase agreement. He told me he would not. I told him that I was then in the position of compelling him to honor the agreement. He then agreed to pay me. I asked to be notified when the check would be ready or to have the checked mailed out. We received the check four days later.
I feel they were unprofessional, condescending, less than honest, and rather incompetent. When I submit the VIN on autotrader.com I have no control over what it says about the vehicle. Furthermore, the salesman had inspected the vehicle and submitted his own assessment on autotrader.com. This was a major bungle. I fear this is how they normally do business.
