Very well. On time, on target. Good workmanship, knowledgeable staff, no subcontractors, polite, no radio. City building inspector commented about no problems with this company's work. This is the second time I have used this firm for major roof replacement and would will use them again.

Two years ago, we bought a unit in a house that was built in 1913 and was converted into three condos about 15 years ago. For budgeting purposes, the condo association wanted to evaluate the condition of the roof and get an estimate of the replacement cost if necessary, because we didn't know how old the roof is. I contacted two roofing contractors on Angie's List, both of whom had good reviews and said they did free estimates. The first contractor (not Pate's) came but said he could not tell me whether or not we needed a new roof and could only give me a bid for replacing it. He said that he would get satellite pictures of the roof in order to prepare the bid. He walked around the house and looked up but did not go up on the roof. He said if I wanted to find out how old the roof is, I could try contacting the city to ask when a roofing permit was last pulled. A few days later, I received their bid in the mail for replacing the roof. The second contractor was Pate's. Greg and his son came on time and had already gotten the satellite pictures showing the size of the roof and the pitch of each segment. They showed me the diagrams and explained how the satellite pictures help them estimate exactly how much material they would need for the job. Then Greg's son went up on the roof to count the number of vents and so on. Greg then told me, "Good news! Your roof is only about 10 years old and should be good for another 15 years." I was relieved to hear that and very grateful that they had taken the time and trouble to go up on the ladder and actually look at the roof. I felt confident in their opinion, but before I made my report to the condo association, I decided to call the city to see if the permit information agreed with Pate's estimate of the roof's age. When I did so, I was told that a permit for a new roof on the house had been pulled in 2007--10 years ago, just as Greg had estimated. The city clerk told me that the contractor had pulled a permit in 2007 but had never gotten the work inspected. I then talked to the relevant city inspector, who told me that because the permit was 10 years ago, the city no longer has any enforcement authority, so basically we would just have to hope that the work had been done correctly. I then told the inspector that I had reason to believe that the work had been done adequately, because a roofer (namely Pate, though I did not tell the inspector the roofer's name) had looked at the roof and told me that it was about 10 years old and looked to be in good shape. The inspector immediately said, "That's a good roofer--you should hang on to him!" And I agree whole-heartedly. I asked Greg if he could give me a ballpark estimate of what it would cost to replace the roof if it had needed it. He stressed that it was only a rough estimate, but the figure he named was significantly below the first contractor's bid. When the first contractor called a few days later to see if I wanted to schedule the replacement work, I bit my tongue and politely declined! My whole experience with Greg and his son was very positive, and I would not hesitate to recommend Pate's to anyone considering roof replacement.

He came to do an estimate and did the work before they left.  He and his son came with the truck and ladder.  The job was so small, they just fixed it while they were here. The price was reasonable for the fact that they even got up on the roof and fixed it.  They nailed down the flashing and sealed it.  It was a small task, but the fact that they did it in a timely manner and we didn't have to worry about it was worth the $300.  It was well worth the money. They were neat.  They had to work around some bushes to get to the roof.  These guys were careful and respectful of the property.

always a good experience with Greg Pates. His price was well under that of a competitor; he is well known in our St Paul neighborhood; the guy doing the work has worked for him for 12 years; quality product and installation; Greg stopped by in person for the estimate, to check the work in progress and to deliver the invoice. Got to know his dog, too. All good - hard to imagine going with anyone else.

I had a great experience with Pates. Their bid was fair, and I felt that their recommendations for my house were in my best interests. It is a family-owned business, and they are down-to-earth and extremely easy to deal with. The service was scheduled quickly, and their crew was polite and did a great job. What I really appreciated was that the Pates came out to the job site multiple times while the crew was here.

Extremely professional, quality work.
Very happy with my Pate's Roofing experience. The foreman came out the day before they were scheduled just to look at the roof. The team arrived on time. They covered the ground to catch any nails and debris. They were quick, proficient roofers. When they left, not a nail or a scrap was left on the ground. It was excellent work.
One roofer accidentally bent my soffit. Greg Pates found a piece (I believe he had to search around to find the exact color) and replaced the damaged part perfectly.
I am very happy with Pate's Roofing and would definitely recommend this company to my neighbors and friends.

Greg and his crew arrived promptly when he said he would and was able to quickly take care of the bathroom vents that needed attention.  He and his crew were personable and professional and left no trace of being here (other than my now working bathroom vents!).  I'd gladly hire them again in the future for any roofing needs.

GREAT JOB!!

Greg and his son Ryan were very helpful in choosing a color and type of roofing for us.

They were wonderful in watching out for our plants and keeping the area clean after the job was finished - and it only took a day!

I can't say enough positive things about Pate's Roofing, a local family - owned residential roofing company in St. Paul.
My 6x14' balcony, connecting through a bedroom door on the back of my house, was leaking (more like cascading water down the kitchen wall below). Within one day, Pates--owner Greg Pates and his son, Ryan, tore off two sets of bad/leaky/rotten decking and roofing, rebuilt a new deck (floor), and resurfaced the whole area with a new durable leak-proof rubber membrane.
Their charge for dealing with the unexpected double layer of rotten wood and old shingling--plus laying down a new wood deck-- was nominal. And they worked very hard to make sure I could keep the existing exterior storm door, sparing me what would be additional carpentry costs and purchase of a new custom exterior storm. On top of that, they cleaned up very well, leaving very little evidence (besides the new balcony flooring) that they'd even been here.  All in all, a superb job at one of the best prices I'd seen. Obvious pride in workmanship and doing a job well.  I recommend them without reservation.

Excellent. Pates fixed our roof after a tree branch damaged our roof during a storm.  There were a lot of damaged homes in the area and it was hard to find a contractor to get the work done.  I saw Pates' sign at our neighbor's house and gave them a call.  They did the job quickly and well and cleaned up after themselves.  I'd use them again.

This was a very small job (took only two squares of roofing) to re-roof a garage extension.  I selected Pates Roofing because of their good Angie reviews and because their estimate to perform the work was very low--half the amount of another estimate I received.  Greg and Ryan Pates were very pleasant and had one of their crews do the job only a day or two after I signed the contract.   I watched off and on while their crew of one did the work.  He was very meticulous  in how he installed the roofing paper, laid the shingles and fashioned and installed the weep screed.  For that reason I was surprised when I noticed that he was covering some rotted spots on the roof with roofing paper without first repairing them.    I told him I wanted them repaired before they were covered.  He said it wasn't really necessary  and directed me to call Greg, who promptly told him that they should be repaired.  With that direction he did a good job repairing them.  Greg charged me only $10 for the materials used to repair the rotted spots and nothing extra for the time.     The crew did a good job of removing roofing scrap with one exception.  The crew had a helper who picked up a few of the roofing nails which fell onto the driveway, but after they finished their work in late afternoon and left,  I found and removed 35 additional roofing nails from the driveway using a magnetic sweep like theirs.   Greg came the next day to pick up the balance due and said he intended to remove stray  nails then.

I called Greg Pates at the beginning of the week. He was out later that week right when he said he would be. They checked the roof and told me what I needed. He dropped off his bid the next day, called me after I accepted the bid and came out and did the work the next day.

Pates was great- they even waiting while I was on hold forever with my home warranty company and then worked with them.  Pates did very great work at getting the flashing installed.  The only hiccup was that they did not arrive when scheduled due to another job going long and did not communicate this with me.  I would definitely hire them again though!
