A week later the two installers came out and had the gutters up in less than two hours. They were competent along with being speedy, and took care of any minor problems they found. A couple of days later we had serious rain and our new gutters and downspouts worked beautifully.
There were many delays and errors during this project. The project took over 7 months to complete, it was expected to take 3. Errors included installation of the wrong sliding glass doors (opened the wrong way), one of the replacement doors had a defect, the exterior wood for the front door was left exposed and the wire to the doorbell was cut during installation of the front door.
Details:
Kris was the sales person, and was very helpful in researching the features I wanted for the doors. I signed the contract and sent in the downpayment in November, and was told it would be 3-5 weeks for the doors to be delivered. However, after the contract was signed he needed more information on colors, first 2 weeks after the contract was signed, and then trim colors a month after the contract was signed. I didn't hear anything from Kris after that, and finally contacted him in February. At that time he informed me that they were still waiting on delivery of the doors from the supplier, and that it would be a few more weeks. At this point it had already been 12 weeks since I signed the contract and that meant another 2 weeks before the doors would be delivered. We were also in the coldest month of the Minnesota winter, which meant the doors could not be installed until it warmed up. I had to contact Kris 2 weeks later, and the doors still were not ready.
Two weeks later, I called the general office and talked to Nancy. Nancy was lovely to work with, and was the one who kept this project going.
Greg contacted me in April to tell me the doors were in. The front door was finally installed one day in early April, and the sliding glass doors were installed later that week. Unfortunately the sliding glass doors slid the wrong way. I called Greg, who was already aware of the problem by the installer, who had questioned why I would want the doors that way when my kitchen table would block the side that opened. I still don't understand why they installed without calling me to check, especially since it was the opposite of the original doors. Greg offered a discount if I kept the doors, I kept the one in our lower level, but one in the kitchen would just not work with the layout of the room. It took another 4 weeks for the new door to be delivered. When that was delivered, the between-the-glass blind did not function correctly. I contacted Greg and was told this was a warranty issue, and he would contact the supplier. The supplier reached out to me the next day, but I am still waiting for that to be completed.
In the mean time, I asked Greg about finishing the exposed wood on the door frame of the front door. He told me that wasn't included, because the wood wouldn't be exposed if I put a storm door in. I reminded him I had told him previously that I was not going to install a storm door. He told me that painting wasn't covered by the contract, I pointed out that aluminum wrap was. He agreed to paint the exposed frame. The painting job was not well done and I will have to redo it.
We also realized that our doorbell was no longer working and that the wires had been cut. I notified Greg, and it was fixed the next day. Greg was responsive and did ensure most of the errors were resolved. I would have preferred the errors hadn't happened in the first place.
In the end, the doors look good, and I think the workmanship is good, however I am not an expert in that, so only time will tell. I'm still waiting for the supplier to fix the warranty issue. When that is done I will be able to enjoy the improvement to our home and forget
all of the issues and frustration of the last 7 months.
"Northwoods does appreciate this feedback as we will do everything possible to correct the process issue we had with this Job. Unfortunately, the contract was established over the winter and most of the delays were in establishing color and the correct time to install. We also had some material orders entered incorrectly from our supplier and have worked with them to correct this issue. We also reordered the incorrect sliding door at no cost to the customer and gave the customer a discount due to our error. We will continue strive to improve processes as this job did have issue come up. The good thing from this review is that is does shows we were responsive and did address the challenges that came up at no cost to the customer. We will be commit to not reproducing this experience and appreciate that the customer was frustrated but recognized some of our positive attributes as well."
"Unfortunately, Northwoods disagrees with the customer’s feedback for this review. Northwoods has a good reputation working out issues as they can come up with construction. While we do agree there were some initial install issue, Northwoods worked closely with the customer and did resolve all issue and customer did pay with the agreement all issue were resolved. So we are surprised that we have received the feedback. The customer did not call us back to ask us to do any additional work after they paid and said they were satisfied with the work. Northwoods also did not cut into the sub floor which was oak but did have to cut back the Pergo material on top and then install the necessary trim to finish the job. In addition, for this specific installation caulking was not needed per the manufactures specifications. We do now recognized the customer is not satisfied with the work and we will do our best to call back to make sure we work with them to the best of our ability."
"Thank you for your feedback and we greatly appreciate your business"
"Thank you for your feedback and it is welcoming to see that we have exceeded your expectations."
"Northwoods greatly appreciates doing business with you and we are glad that we have met your home exterior needs."
"Northwoods is glad to here that you have a good experince with our company and our proud that we met or exceed your expectations. Thank you for your business!"
The installers were actually subcontracted from a different company and we were not made aware of this until they handed us their business card and asked us to address any concerns directly to them. This was disappointing, as we had been led to believe they were actually Northwoods installers. We had some issues with the installers throughout the job, but overall they were punctual and did good work on the siding, doors and windows.
We had issues with the steel doors during installation. There were dents in the door panels and the trim was in bad shape. The installers also caused some damage to the trim during installation. Initially, Jared connected us with the door company to handle the warranty issues and get replacement doors sent out. Dealing with the door company was a nightmare and ended up dragging this job out 8 months past the work completion date. We were asked several times by Northwoods to pay the remaining amount because the work was done and "the doors were really more of a warranty issue" (even though the installers did cause damage). We were essentially left on our own in dealing with the doors until we withheld payment from Northwoods, which ultimately ended up getting us the support we needed to get the issues resolved with the door company.
The quality of the work, the price and the quoting process were good. The communication was not good and the added stress of dealing with the door company for months with little support from Northwoods turned it into a bad experience.
"Unfortunately the customer is correct that this job did take longer than expected due to a busy schedule and delays with the door company. Northwoods has invested in more Project Management personnel to meet this demand as we grow our company. Northwoods did have a problem with the door company. However, we did not ask for the full amount of the sale only that amount that was due outside of the door issue. Also, Northwoods did pour a lot of time and resources into correcting this issue with the supplier. We met several times with the supplier and worked hard to make sure the supplier met the customer’s needs and eventually that did happen. At times suppliers can cause a delay due to quality issues and unfortunately this was also over the winter months which also delayed the completions dates. Northwoods will not be using this supplier in the future as they did have a poor response time. It is also not uncommon for companies to have 1099 hires for actual work being done, especially during a busy schedule. Northwoods works very hard to screen and build partnership with our subcontractors to ensure quality and customer service. From the feedback Northwoods is glad that we did meet the customers’ expectations for quality and price."
They removed the old shingles and installed the new ones and put new flashing on the chimney in one day. They came back the next day finished cleaning up and removed the dumpster. Very professional staff and crew.
We hardly knew they were here. Great job.The only criticism I have is that their approval and payment system reminded me of the 90s. After they drew up the quote, they asked that I mail it back to them, and that when they had reviewed it they would call me. It took a number of weeks before I heard back and we were able to schedule the job. Then, we waited a few weeks after the gutters were installed for a bill to arrive in the mail which we had to then respond to by mail with a check. I don't believe that all businesses need high-end websites, but being able to approve the quote and pay online would have simplified the experience and eliminated a few weeks of, "did they get our letter?"
All of that said, the price was great and they did good work. I would highly recommend them.
