However, we did encounter many unexpected issues. We would have had less issues with the job had Brian stopped at key points during the execution to double check before proceeding. We also found the quality of paver installation to be less than what we had experienced with a paver walkway we had installed by a different person at our previous house.
The pergola builder, Collin Lundy, a subcontractor of Brian's, proved to be the model of the partnering relationship we would have liked to have had with Brian. It's one thing to agree to a design on paper. When that design begins to take shape in actuality, however, many details and options and issues not previously thought through or anticipated come to light. Execution speed is not a supreme virtue in installation. Pausing to confirm, to explore options, to test sample selections and layout, is a much more valuable asset. Which Collin did supremely well, and which we wished to have had with Brian.
Collin checked with us before proceeding with each step of the design and build of the pergola. For example, Collin laid out on the lawn an example of how the beams could be spaced to allow us to visualize the options, he purchased small amounts of several different varnish colors and used them on scrap pieces of wood to allow us to visualize the resulting color differences, he waited to show us the cross beam height options relative to the window frame height before proceeding with that step, etc. With Collin's work, there were no surprises. No rework. No regrets.
We are very happy. Brian (owner) is professional, responsive and very customer oriented. He wants you to be
happy and will work with you until you are. We are delighted with the finished product.
Work commenced about one week after the final plan was approved. Mr. Nelson and his crew were extremely helpful and professional. As most projects go, we encountered some changes that I thought might be issues. Thankfully our changes were quickly and completely accommodated by Mr. Nelson and his team.
We now enjoy our paver patio and back yard. Many thanks to Nelco and Mr. Nelson. I would highly recommend this company for your landscaping needs.
If you want someone to lay sod or grass seed, you might pick someone else but if you want a creative planner who can really change your yard - Brian can do it. He does great things with rocks. Water is always a problem on our lot and he worked dilegently to keep rain water moving away from the house.
Unlike many landscapers we didn't have to pay to see a plan. He provided a very comprehensive plan based on a couple meetings with us. Better yet when we suggested changes he didn't get all (but it's my wonderful plan how dare you change my masterpiece, blah blah). He simply incorporated the changes and moved on.
Even after the rain gardens were done we discussed some of the planting choices - he removed and replaced some we thought would be problematic. He worked hard to make us happy.
We'll have him back to do the front of the house when we save up some money.
We highly recommend Brian (Nelco Landscaping).
He worked very hard keeping the job moving, excavating for a day or two. Our clay soil is very heavy so it took him a bit longer to get it removed and then loosened. He discussed adding more compost to insure the plants had good soil, which we agreed to. He was very thorough and careful to avoid existing trees and gardens. Due to our choice of placement of the raingarden we knew he would cut through a sprinkler system pipe and warned him of that. When he brought the trencher to dig out the area for the draintile, he offered to dig a trench for the replacement sprinkler pipe line. That was very nice and we appreciated that greatly. He was knowledgeable about replacement plants as there were a few in the Watershed District plan that are favorites of deer. Since we have many deer around, Brian was able to suggest several other possibilities. We are very pleased with his work and the look of the rain garden.
