"thank you for taking the time to look so closely at our range. i have since taken the time to amend our range with a little more clarification. Also, our range is somewhat dependent on the time of year, and this season is especially difficult due to all the road construction. driving south 30 miles, almost any time of day, is too time consuming to be either efficient with our production or using ecologically sustainable practices, i.e. gas. in addition, we are very busy with work much closer to home, so we choose to stay close when ever possible. i presume you are OK with this scenario. thank you for your understanding."
Both Tim and Jade, the company's designer, listened carefully to what I was hoping to achieve (renovate the second-floor bathroom, convert a small second-floor bedroom into a laundry room, and tackle some major issues in the basement to prep for eventual finishing). One of my favorite parts of the initial process was reviewing the design options. Jade drafted three to four layouts for each area under consideration. Each design addressed my "must-haves" in unique ways. Envisioning the spaces via these carefully conceived blueprints was the perfect way to launch the project.
Once the designs were set, Tim and Jade did a fantastic job guiding me through the selection process. They offered parameters and input when requested, but I felt ownership over the materials I selected.
The carpenters who work for Home Tailors are truly wonderful. Of everyone who came and went over the several-month renovation, I came to know the carpenters best because of the sheet amount of time they spent here. Creative, talented, thorough, kind...just a few words to describe them. I always felt at home with them in my living space. They went the extra mile time and time again. And after seeing just what a large role the carpenters had in every facet of this renovation, I am so thankful for their expert skills.
I also had good experiences with all of Home Tailors' subcontractors (plumbers, HVAC, electricians, painter, etc). Everyone was friendly, efficient, and mindful of being in someone's living space.
I was impressed with the transparency of the contract and the meticulous documentation of modifications to the project's scope as we went along. I had access to the precise cost of each component of the renovation. This was a refreshing contrast to a past experience with another contractor (different house), where costs seemed hidden and lumped together.
Home Tailors undertakes the design and renovation process with candor, enthusiasm, and the promise to do the job right. I felt that Tim was truly an advocate for me, always trying to ensure that I received the advantage in any situation. I highly recommend this company and its team of subcontractors for any home renovation projects you may be considering.
I guess we were disappointed in his lack of desire to discuss what other items we wanted completed such as the doors and flooring. I took time from work to meet with this staff and I guess he was not interested in doing the other part of the project outside of the painting.
He seems to do a good job for others though. Maybe we just were not a good fit for him or he is super busy, which we are running into a lot from other contractors.
I would not use them again for the bid when we remodel the kitchen however I would not disway others from contacting him, for he seems knowlegable and would probably do a good job.
"Regarding [member name removed]; [member name removed] response is accurate and fair. She points out the project consisted primarily of interior surface repairs and painting. As a result of this and the fact that her home is on the outside edge of our geographic work area, I felt she would be better served by a direct quote from my painter. And, as [member name removed] notes in her response, there were odds and ends to do, which I believed would be more economically and sustainably accomplished by a more local contractor, or even a local Big Box store with their respective trades people. [member name removed] also correctly points out that many of us are very busy and that my “lack of desire” is really an inability to provide the level of service we strive to provide and certainly what she deserves. It also seemed to me that our commuting distance involved so much time that the necessary price would include money she did not need to spend. I do not always know that before traveling to client’s home and combining that with the actual nature of the work. [member name removed] was gracious in accepting my apology and allowing us a C grade."
"This regards Member Comments from my visit on June 27th, 2013. I understand how it feels to have a dream that depends on the performance of others. I also understand how we hope for project costs to meet our budget, contractors who listen and show up on-time. I understand how my visit fell short. In this case I was late due to a client’s needs on a job in progress. For safety sake I chose not to call while driving. Once arrived, I did my best to expedite the meeting as it was rather obvious I was no longer welcome. Still, I reviewed the plans and site conditions. Before asking for a budget number, I shared my thoughts on a rough price range which was accurate and fair. My caution to her was in her best interest and not an attempt to regain my chance at doing her project."
"These members statements are correct. We did not get back to them as soon as we should have and in the time frame we had promised. We are pleased they had a back-up contractor. We do our best to be forthright about our ability to provide a timely, accurate and detailed estimate. In spite of our intentions, we disappointed [member's name removed] and wish to extend an apology to both homeowners. We also appreciate the feedback that Angie's list allows. This will help us improve our service."
This particular project took 5 days and went without a hitch. They started the project when they said they would, cleaned up meticulously at the end of each day (a huge deal for me and my wife), and finished on time and on budget. And the finished product was outstanding - very high quality workmanship.
My only critique is that they seem to be a bit more expensive than other contractors. But after using them several times the value became clear to me - their reliability, consistency, conscientious construction crews and high quality was worth every penny.
It was important to me that the contractor I chose be someone who would be focused on me and my house, be a good listener and good communicator, to help me achieve what I wanted and, at times, help me figure out what I wanted.
It was also important to me that the contractor I worked with understand and have experience working with old houses. I wanted to know that we shared values and a philosophy about what it meant to undertake a project like this.
I sought someone committed to quality, who utilized craftspeople who really cared about their work; someone who gave attention to detail, all the details, who understood that a small thing could make a big difference, who was not satisfied with good enough.
I wanted someone who had an approach that would keep me involved, answer my questions, give me as much information as I wanted, help me work my way through decisions and support those decisions.
Since this project would take months, I also wanted to work with people I liked.
Tim and Jade from Home Tailors fit the bill for all of the above, and they gave me an experience and a result with which I'm extremely happy and satisfied.
In the planning and design stage, Tim and Jade worked with me, patiently, to assure that we arrived at a final plan that really fit what I wanted and could achieve.
During the actual work, they followed a process that was the least disruptive possible, flexible. The workers were all pleasant, interested, considerate. The craftspeople were careful, dedicated professionals. Home Tailors remained involved and responsive throughout the process until the last tiny detail was completed.
The result is a lovely "new" home, with an addition that looks like it was original, a kitchen that is modern and efficient yet retains the character of the house, new spaces that delight, and lovely touches throughout.
I have since recommended Home Tailors to numerous friends, and plan to work with them again on future projects.
It became evident early on in the project that the ultimate strength of Home Tailors is their quality of work. They have a passion for what they do and take great pride in their work. For them, working on a project is not considered a "job". Even though the project has been completed, I continue to be in awe of how they were guided by a blueprint to transform an old, outdated kitchen into a fabulous new kitchen.
Also, I was impressed with Home Tailors' unlimited amount of patience to work with a novice client like me who was intent on updating her kitchen. They took an enormous amount of time to teach me the process, educate me on the terms of the trade, and guide me through the decision-making process.
The purpose of this project was to update my kitchen for the future but preserve the integrity of the past. Since the house was built in the 1950's, I felt it important that the new design meld with the rest of the house. Not only did Home Tailors achieve that goal; but during the process of remodeling the heart of my home, they preserved its soul.
We were very impressed by the skill and knowledge of everyone on the job. In the end, most of the work in not visible because it's inside the retaining wall, but the finishing carpentry on our extended deck is excellent. They also fixed our home's gutter issues, and added a rain garden. Slight design changes were carefully considered and meticulously executed. We can't say enough good about the Home Tailor team.
