My 30+ year old Yamaha baby grand plays like a brand-new piano. I had no idea that the action was in such poor shape; I wondered why dynamics were so difficult and thought it was all me. Much, much better now. Greg is not cheap, but as with most things in life, you get what you pay for. The evaluation is honest and thorough. The suggestions for additional work are a little off-putting, but you don't have to accept them. Overall, recommended.

Greg Gavin came highly recommended from a friend of mine who owns a baby grand My impression was not so favorable. My piano is nothing special, but it's been in my family for 30+ years and serves my needs well. I took lessons as a kid and am a very casual player now. Greg's opinion was something to the effect that my piano was ready for the landfill. He recommended an overhaul that would cost something like $5000 if I was interested in preserving the piano for sentimental reasons, otherwise I should buy a good used one (which conveniently enough he had for sale). I was not in the market for a new piano and not convinced I needed one for the level of playing that I do. I do not like that I had to pay someone $65 to tell me my piano is junk, but thankfully I followed my gut and called someone else. Gagnon Piano, who I called the next month, provided exactly what I needed. Gavin is probably a good choice if you're a piano snob, but Gagnon is better for us everyday folks!
Description of Work: Came to tune my piano (an early-1940s Story & Clark upright) but did not do the work.
