"[Member Name Removed]claims our billing was incorrect. We have gone to court over this and the judge ruled in our favor. She was very happy with the work performed."
"Thank you so much for your great review! We are happy that you are so pleased with your floors and our crew. We will certainly address it with them. Steve"
"[removed member name], thank you so much for your kind words. We are so pleased that you are enjoying your new floors with your family! Thank you so much! Steve"
They showed up as scheduled and started what was a relatively large project by residential standards. After laying a fair amount of the floor, the installers realized that one section was not aligned properly. This set us back by a day, but at least they seemed to be paying attention, and the job was completed with just a day's delay. We were getting nervous because we wanted to maintain sufficient drying time before our scheduled move into the house.
After the finish was added, we inspected the work and thought that it was OK, but were a bit disappointed by the varnish where some spots were irregular and overall there was not the sheen that we had expected.
We moved into the home on October 17, 2014. By the end of the year, we had noticed spaces between boards, and we initially attributed this to the cold, dry air of a Minneapolis winter. We thought that in the spring things might look better. We were later told by Steve that we needed to "wait a full cycle". That was after we had called him to mention our disappointment. In the meantime, the gaps had increased rather than decrease and, in some cases, the floor is not level, with some boards slightly higher than others. We can't recall ever seeing a floor looking like this elsewhere.
We're not sure what can be done at this point, but it is disappointing that Steve argues and insists that it is normal when that does not appear to be the case. The old part is impeccable, and the new part is not. Another flooring professional who visited our home for another reason noted the misaligned boards and separation on butt joints. He suggested that we ask the installer to get an inspector from the mill out to our home. To be fair, we have not yet mentioned this to Steve. But based on his initial reaction to our complaint, we are not optimistic that he will process much of what we have to say.
His comments so far included: why did you wait so long, you must have spilled water on it, the subfloor is deficient (though it doesn't seem to be for the original flooring), and -- as mentioned earlier -- we just need to wait.
In summary, these folks have an attractive website, and at first glance a nice story to tell. But we are regretful that we did not wait until we had a more reliable word-of-mouth reference. We were in a hurry and pulled the trigger and now are dealing with someone whose first inclination does not appear to be standing behind his people's work. I would recommend that anyone thinking of installing wood flooring in the area conducts thorough due diligence before selecting Floors By Steve.
From start to finish this job went flawlessly. Got a return call within hours, got a bid within 48 hours, got a follow-up call to discuss the bid, set a start and finish date. PERFECT! Every aspect of the work was excellent. I will use these guys again. Best contractor experience I've had this year. Thanks, Steve. Great job!
Entire team was prompt, efficient truly a great job. Our floors look brand new.
"Thank you for your response [removed member name]! We are so happy you are enjoying your new stairs."
"Thank you [member name removed] for your kind words!"
"We are glad that you are happy with your floors. Thank you so much for your kind response."
"Thank you [member name removed] for your review. We received your nice letter in June on how you were pleasantly surprised to come back from your vacation and have the floors look so nice. We are sorry about the miscommunication about the furniture removal, as we had been told you were on vacation and were given the key. We appreciate your business very much and thank you for your business."
"It is unfortunate that you waited nine years (job done 6/04) to tell us this. We even deducted $2400 which was for the additional wood--as it was our error in calculating what was needed. As a result, there was no margin. Cracks are natural in our climate--if it is too dry, you will need a humidifier. You had a 3/4" solid floor which is blind nailed on tongue, so this does not make sense. Lisa remembers [member name removed] calling and apologizing for the way he had treated her. Our integrity is so important to us. We supplied all the materials and did the job properly. We did not receive a call for any problems."
"Member, thank you for your wonderful response. It was so great for all of us to get to know you and your family. Please stop by anytime and your kids can pet Reyna. Take care. FBS"
I think this company has the skill to do a good job but is poorly run. Lisa, Steve's daughter, sold the job and said that Steve was still involved in the work. We saw no sign of Steve at any point. Kurt was able to finish the job after he was asked to do so by us. After complaining we finally talked to Lisa who couldn't quite apologize and only seemed to regret that she should have told Kurt he was working for a "picky cabinetmaker".
