The service engine soon indicator started coming on, so I pulled the trouble codes myself and had an idea about the problem of a rough idle and lost power on my vehicle. I had been advised that it was likely a failed sensor. Apex is close to my home and was happy to help get my vehicle to and from their location where I left it with them for a couple days. Their operation is a small independent shop with just a few employees so you can easily get to know the staff. The lead mechanic there seems to be very knowledgable and has always taken the time to answer my questions and discuss the problem. They are a bit less formal and their facility is somewhat small and makeshift. Based on the trouble codes I mentioned, the Apex mechanic said in his experience that it was more likely a problem with the intake manifold rather than a bad sensor. They called within a few hours to confirm their diagnosis and gave me an estimate on the replacement cost for the intake manifold gaskets. Before approving the repair I did some checking on the cost of the parts and some estimates from other shops in the area. I tried to use the information to negotiate a reduction in the Apex price which was higher than the other locations. They weren't willing to come down and said that they were also basically not charging me for the diagnostic if I did the repair through them. I feel like they do quality work and don't try to upsell me to other repairs or services that aren't needed. I also like to support a local business, so I decided to finish the job with Apex. They completed their work the next day and even did some test driving to make sure all was running well. I wish their services didn't come at a price premium, but I guess that you sometimes have to pay more to get good quality and service. I'm still searching for a local mechanic that does great work at a competitive price.
