Uneek Design Build Remodel

We hired Derrick Langva with Uneek Design, Build, & Remodel to complete a full exterior deck build in October 2021. We paid $30,000 in cash (half up front, and the remaining half upon completion). He had two young college kids complete the project and told us he was grooming them in to his company and re-assured us that they would do an excellent job. After the job was completed, we noticed multiple areas of very poor workmanship quality to our deck. One part of the Trex deck was bowing, the nails plugs were visible across the whole deck, the edging was cut poorly, and there were a few spots that nail spots were sticking up. He came out a handful of times in attempts to "repair" the deck, but only placed "shims" under it to attempt to fix it - basically placed a band aide on it without ever correcting the issues. My husband is an attorney so we decided to sue his company in small claims court. We have multiple photos, emails, texts, and communication with him and he has now gone "silent" and refused to communicate with us to fix the issues. For $30,000, our deck should be in near perfect condition for workmanship. Derrick was AWFUL to work with. He scames people for money and does poor quality work.

Warning. Uneek Design, Build & Remodeling does not pay their sub-contractors. We provided and Estimate and did all electrical work per that Estimate for them but only got paid for a portion of the work. The owner of Uneek, Design, Build & Remodeling collected money from the homeowner but didn't pay us for our work, keeping more profits for herself. The owner of Uneek Design, Build & Remodeling promised to make payments and over the last 2 years we have attempted to collect from her. She is avoiding us and hasn't paid us the remaining amount owed. We have been in business since 1999 and haven't had problems like this in the past. It's unfortunate there are companies out there that will take the customers money but not pay their sub-contractors. Customers beware - this tactic puts you as an (home)owner at risk.

On Monday, April 23, 2016 Uneek Design Build Remodel (Uneek) started a bathroom remodeling project including a new shower door, new replacement shower entrance curb (the previous owner needed this removed for an invalid access to the shower), new vanity, new faucet, new wall light, and new real stone tile surround above the tub. The job was done on Thursday April 27th we thought. Discourse with Unneek started going downhill when we noticed that the white grout on the tile filled in all the pits in the stone taking away the interesting shadows and replacing with unnatural white fill-ins. There didn't seem to be enough thought about how this would look or a lack of communication between the designer and the installer. On his last day we could tell the installer was clearly upset about our disappointment with the grouting and at one point threatened to stop completion of the project and demanded to be pay in full when the job was done. We waited to use the shower until all the sealing was dry. When we found that water was leaking over the shower curb under the shower door, we decided that we would stop payment on the last check to insure that the leak would be fixed. As it turned out, the designer made another stop on Tuesday, May 3rd with tube of clear sealer to attempt to plug the leaks. I had told her in a email I had sent after discovering the leaks appeared,that the top of the curb seemed to be slanted out away from the shower basin. She said the she had talked with the installer and that the curb was level on the top. We ended up paying the full amount with the express promise of fixing this leak under the warranty, but that we had to make the final payment before any repairs could be done. I was told by the designer that the problem would be repaired when they would be reserving time for their monthly warranty repairs on or around the last week in May. But the designer told me that there would be no problems getting the leak fixed then. I even have that conversation recorded on my smart phone. All three sides of the curb were tiled with the same real stone tile that was used around the tub. So when water would splash off from hitting the inside of the curb, it would gather with some water going into the basin from the splashing and some would end up outside on the floor; enough to saturate half the bath mat. A simple change in design of the curb construction with the inside wall being shorter then the outside wall would have made the leak a non-issue. We have made many attempts to reach Uneek by phone, email, and a letter via the post office starting in early June have not been answered. My wife was able to reach the installer by phone on June 23th at 9:13 AM. He said that he didn't know about these problems and would need to talk to the designer. The designer and installer are married.

Working with Sarah and Derek was the best renovation experience I have had.  There quote was broken down by line item and when Sarah adjusted the quote as we made alterations to the design....all pricing was upfront and fair.  The end price was right in line with the quote and any changes that occurred to the plan, the cost or the schedule were discussed with us up front.  Sarah was very honest, explained every detail so we could make informed decisions and allowed us flexibility in the design.  Once the construction started there was not a flaw, Sarah coordinated all the subcontracts, permits, inspectors etc.  Derek and his teams provided quality work while being professional, on time, communicative and tidy.
This process could not have gone smoother, though we had a glitch with one of the city inspectors Sarah handled it, resolved it and instantly informed us of the work around.  Consideration of the customer's home, clean up and overall professionalism appear to be a standard ingrained in all the crews used on this project.
I would recommend Uneek Design to everyone I know and will definitely be using them in the future.

Derick provided an estimate prior to work.  Upon agreement to begin work, he kept us informed of his work schedule.  He took care to find siding that matched the house, and the new sidling wall, built to enclose a patio under the deck, looks like it was always there.  While  there was a misunderstanding about where we wanted some of  the lattice installed, Derrick resolved the difference immediately, without any hassle.  Derrick kept the work area clean and finished without a trace of any debris. 
We liked the end result and have asked him to provide an estimate for additional work.   I recommend get an estimate from him. 

Derrick and Sarah provide a level of professionalism and attention to detail that isn't always provided by builders. Their proposal included a drawing that highlighted before and after work. It's been my experience that this type of detail is only provided when an architect has been involved. Sarah and Derrick were able to walk through the Aesthetics of
the work to be done, which isn't a typical delivery. BTW, the neighbors loved the work as well
