The plumber that they sent me was pleasant and seemed honest. He provided some options, and I chose to have him come back and clean my drains using their hydroscrub method ($670 for both kitchen and bathroom sinks). I had to wait a few days for service, however. When he came back and started the treatment, he soon found that he couldn't get the snake all the way down the system, so he aborted and went down to the crawl space to see if there might be further issues.
The plumber diagnosed the problem as too-narrow and misconfigured pipes. I couldn't complain, since he didn't charge me for the failed attempt to clean the pipes with the hose, but this meant further delay, and the job would now involve replacing pipes and would cost $2500. I purchased a Mr. Rooter advantage membership for $100, to bring down the cost ($2900-$2500), and I purchased a drain cleaning product that the plumber talked up, for $50. I almost had Mr. Rooter do the work, since I was desperate and I knew that other plumbers in the area were busy and scheduled out pretty far, but luckily, I got someone else out to provide and assessment, and he let me know that the $2500 price tag on the job was excessive.
Thus, I hired Dan's Plumbing to come out and charge by the hour, rather than charging by the job, as Mr. Rooter does. It ended up being about $900, and Dan is someone I'll use in the future--really impressed with his experience and his honesty.
The lesson is, don't pay Mr. Rooter to do any work on your plumbing except for the drain cleaning that they specialize in, and hopefully that will work better in your situation than it did in mine. Most people probably already know this, but I almost learned the hard way. In addition to the high price, I didn't really enjoy working with this company. I'd rather call up an individual plumber than go through a scheduler. And I definitely don't like the gimmicky salesmanship and the system of requiring customers to become members to get better pricing.
