The guy comes inside my house and surprisingly did not bring buckets and hose lengths, considering that we were going to drain the radiators. Furthermore, he did not come equipped with one single tool, even a flashlight. Maybe he had a tape measure. Nor did he cover his wet, dirty shoes or change into clean shoes.
We then partially drained the boiler/radiators, which primarily consisted of me ferrying cups of water to the bathroom sink to dump out and return to him to fill up again. Absolutely ridiculous. We obviously could have done this far quicker and more thoroughly had we been using buckets and hose lengths.
From what I can tell he did not do any of the specific inspection/maintenance checks that I asked them to do. Obviously I am not a boiler expert but, for instance, I asked him about checking the safety valve, which the User Manual is adamant about. He just said "Nah, I never touch 'em. If I touch 'em I might break 'em."
He did mention that the boiler should be re-vented, which is true. I asked him to follow up with an estimate on that.
So, Apollo charged me $200.00 to come out and partially drain my boiler/radiators in a ridiculously inefficient manner, and frankly, the guy seemed like he was in a hurry to leave the entire time.
After a few email exchanges Apollo emailed me about the re-vent. They said it would be "650.00 plus labor billed at a rate of $ 30.00 per 1/4 hour. additional costs will be charged for any additional pipe, fittings or other materials needed to complete the job."
I asked them if I could get, you know, a formal estimate. Is that too much to expect when potentially hiring a contractor and spending about $1,000 on a job? I hardly think so. So, Apollo then sent me an "estimate" which was just a reiteration of the above quote.
Keep in mind that this "estimate" never said how long the job will take and left open the "additional costs..." So this "estimate" essentially wrote Apollo a blank check for labor and other potential costs. That's not an estimate--it's a complete insult and a joke.
