HIS CREW DID THE INSTALLATION IN ONE DAY. THERE WAS NO MESS LEFT, NO DIRTY CARPETS OR WOOD FLOORS. ANOTHER CREW MEMBER CAME OUT A FEW DAYS LATER TO COMPLETE THE EXTERIOR METAL WRAP. THE WORK LOOKS EXCELLENT INSIDE AND OUT; AND, AGAIN, THERE WAS NO MESS LEFT BEHIND. THEY EVEN RECYCLED SOME LEFT OVER CONSTRUCTION SCRAP FROM A DO IT YOURSELF PROJECT MONTHS PRIOR!
THEY ARE HIRED TO DO 5 MORE WINDOWS THIS COMING SPRING TO COMPLETE THE WINDOW REPLACEMENT IN OUR 1941 HOME.
We previously had a number of frustrating experiences with contractors involving deadlines and staying within a specified time frame. Craig explained how his project management system ensured the client was able to access the project calendar and all other pertinent information. He also explained how he provides very detailed project estimates - which allows the client to understand all the costs involved and if needed, manipulate the project to stay within budget.
These factors, paired with the knowledge that the talented Legacy crew would complete the majority of the work themselves, were why we hired them.
My hopes were high, but based on my past experiences, I was still skeptical that Craig would end up being ?just another contractor? and leave us guessing on the schedule and remodeling process. However, an amazing thing happened? Legacy did exactly what they promised! They stuck to their schedule. They kept us informed. They stayed within budget. They even welcomed our idea to add a another feature to the kitchen mid-process. Ultimately, they did exactly what they said they would do.
Craig and his crew are talented and trustworthy. They were respectful of our family and our living space as they worked on our house. We highly recommend Legacy Building Company and will not hesitate to call them for our next project.
The Legacy Building Company website says they pride themselves on quick, professional communication with their clients. Yes, they are prompt in returning calls, etc., but they are not professional in how they communicate or respond to clients' wishes. I told Craig several times that email is my preferred method of communication, to give me time to get back to him, and if he contacted me by phone/text, I would most likely be slow in responding, as I am very busy, work long hours and do not check my phone very often. This was basically ignored - Craig persisted in contacting me mainly by phone and text, often leaving multiple texts/messages throughout the day wondering why I am not getting back to him within the hour. Very annoying, frustrating and unprofessional.
The people he hired to do the work did the job but were very messy and did not clean up after themselves. I found several roofing nails throughout my property, some even over a year after they finished their work. This was after I called Craig to let him know there were many nails on my property and to ask him to get them cleaned up, something I should not have to ask them to do.
Craig's people often showed up very early in the morning, and on weekends, AFTER Craig had confirmed they were not going to work on the weekend. One person showed up before 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning and started nailing siding right next to my open bedroom window. Needless to say, they woke me up and were surprised there was somebody home.
When his people were doing the roofing work, they were actually surprised that my satellite dish wasn't receiving a signal after they had moved my dish. They said they thought it would work, as they had tried to put it back where it originally was. Seriously, people?
Craig also had a bad habit of showing up at my home unannounced. One time he was waiting for me to come home and he pulled up into my driveway behind me, completely unannounced. I was unaware he was waiting for me, and before I could even bring my car to a stop, he had quickly pulled into the driveway and had gotten out of his car. He was in his own personal truck - it didn't have any markings on it letting me know it was a truck with the Legacy Group, so I didn't recognize it as Craig's until he got out of the truck. For all I knew, the person in the truck might have been somebody waiting for a home invasion, etc. As a single female, this is not how you treat your female customers. It scared me and I was not happy about it. When I asked Craig to not do that again, explaining that this is a safety issue, he was totally surprised that what he'd done was not a good thing. Completely clueless...
One other weekend I was in church and noticed I received a voice mail message from Craig asking if he could come over that afternoon to check on some work and that he would need access to my garage where his people had stored some tools and materials. He called back an hour later - still in the morning - saying he was on his way over. He did this without waiting for a return call or email or text from me saying whether it was OK to come over. I never gave him the OK to come over, so
imagine my surprise when I pulled up to my house and saw Craig impatiently waiting for me to get home. What the heck?
Generally speaking, even though Craig's website says they pride themselves on communication, he is a bit clueless of how to interact with homeowners - don't just show up unannounced, give your clients time to get back to you, and above all else, pay attention to and honor their wishes when it comes to preferred mode of communication!
I'm not sure about the quality of the work his people do or the quality of the materials they used. Due to delays in getting the siding & roofing done, they had to wait until the following spring to re-stain my deck. Yes, they re-stained my deck, but the stain was already peeling in many places not even 1/2 a year afterwards. I've never had that happen before with any of the stains I've used, so it makes me think they went with a cheap product in terms of cost and quality. I'm going to have to have my deck re-stained this year due to the crappy job his folks did.
As far as cost goes, I don't know if the cost is reasonable - it is what my insurance paid for the damage, so he got paid what the insurance company paid me.
When it came to payment, this work was done through my insurance company. Craig was very impatient with being paid. I paid him as soon as I could - the insurance company sent me a check, I deposited it into my account, and then I wrote him a check as soon as it cleared. My insurance company was good about communicating with the both of us about when they'd mailed out the check to me. Craig seemed to not realize that just because the check had been mailed, it didn't mean I actually had received the check, much less that the funds were available in my account. Towards the end he was extremely rude and impatient about getting paid. I told him several times that I had not yet received the final check, but this somehow did not seem to register with him. I kept receiving several emails from him insisting he be paid, and each time I told him I would as soon as I received the check and deposited it into my account (which I did).
One other thing, Craig made it clear that he disagreed with some aspects of what the insurance company would pay to replace - there were a few things Craig didn't see a need to replace, he disagreed with materials, cost, etc. He basically got into a p****** match via email with my insurance adjuster and, in doing so, put me in the middle. I thought this was not professional - one of the first rules of doing business is to not put down or slam others. I made it clear if he had a disagreement, he needed to work it out with the insurance company and leave me out of the argument. I guess that should have been my first red flag about working with Craig. Too bad I didn't pay closer attention to it...
Overall, I would not use him again. I sure hope I don't have any problems going forward with the siding or roofing materials they used because I might have to use them for repair work due to whatever warranty it is that I have for labor & materials...
"This was an unfortunate experience for The Legacy Building Company. Yes the customer said her preferred method of communication was email, but she rarely responded with in a day's time if at all. Thus, I tried to text and email her, including event to let her know that workers needed to work outside of regular working hours. I feel that I attempted to communicate well, however the owner simply did not return communications, thus the surprise visits only happened after repeated attempts to communicate with the customer with no response. In spite of the customer's difficulty responding to multiple attempts to communicate, the project turned out very well and we are very pleased with our work. I even came out and fixed her broken overhead door for free on a Sunday which had nothing to do with our work. I did this as I could tell she was frustrated and wanted to do something nice for her. The work was done for what the insurance paid for which took over a month to negotiate on the customer's behalf. Thus I don't understand the grade given on our price as it reflects exactly what the insurance paid. I really do wish the customer the best."
The quality is very high, everything is quite solidly done and I believe will last a very long time. When we had changes they were great about implementing them.
Trustworthy and very clean crew.
Most importantly they are trustworthy to be in your house without you. 10 stars out of 5.
On the day the project began, the owner called/texted to confirm the arrival time of his crew and they showed up exactly as predicted/expected, and happened each day of the project. At the start of each day they "set up shop" and at the end of each day they cleaned up and left everything as clean/orderly as could be expected for a project of this nature. There was an online calendar available for me to check on the status of the project on a daily basis - enabled me to see what was scheduled and what was actually completed.
The minute after the granite was cut and placed, I decided I wanted a new cooktop (my original plan was to use the one I already had). Although this could have caused a pause in the action as I went on a mad dash to locate/purchase a new cooktop, however, the team simply moved on to other work that could be completed while I attended to cooktop shopping, thus keeping the overall timeline intact
I've often heard people talk about kitchen makeovers/remodeling as being a difficult experience; in all honesty, this went very smoothly and I couldn't be any happier with the work estimated, performed, and billed. Upon completion of the project, a summary of what was done and materials used were provided as well as a detailed "actual" bill, which did not exceed the estimated project costs
I am now considerering remodeling a powder room, and I plan on working with The Legacy Building Company on this project as well.
performing our kitchen slab leak repair. He obtained complete
insurance authorization/coverage for his estimate, which included,
according to the insurance agent, a suspicious/excessive fee for
barrier containment of dust. However, Craig did the work with NO
proper containment. There was no barrier protection over: 1) the upper
cabinets, 2) several silk flower decorations sitting on top of the
cabinets, 3) the two doorways to the rest of the house, 4) a cutting board on the counter, or 5) the furnace
vent connected to the kitchen. The next day, the furnace broke down
in the middle of January because of the heavy dust in the air and the
furnace vent being completely covered/choked with dust. The entire
house had a dusty haze. A layer of fine concrete dust from the
excavation and black sand/dirt used to refill the slab leak repair
pipeline was deposited on all surfaces both inside and outside of all
cabinets, top and bottom (as the flimsy containment over the bottom cabinets
was not even taped into place and was loose enough to move with any
air flow). Outside of the kitchen I also found the same dust in
cabinets through the uncovered doorways connected to the kitchen.
The furnace repair would have been $8,000, but a mechanically gifted
friend helped us out for free. The irreplaceable flowers cost about
$500. It has taken me over a year to clean the inside of cabinets
and I am still not done. The night of this debacle, I called Craig
to complain and he asked me if I was a germophobe. I explained I
knew what proper containment was through work with previous
contractors, and that this was obviously fraudulent and corrupt
business practice. Due to the 15' pipeline hole in my kitchen floor,
I let him finish the job, but reviewed the estimate carefully and
told him I would not pay him for what was not done. So, Craig put up
the proper containment two days after the excavation and one day
after the concrete slab refill. This did help as there was a dusty
haze in my house for about two weeks afterwards. I reviewed the
estimate carefully and found other people to do as much as possible
so I could eliminate Craig as soon as possible. A friend finished
trim work including an end panel next to my stove that Craig never
even purchased nor had in the estimate. Without this end panel,
there would be a ton of critters eating whatever fell in the gap
between my stove and counter, impossible to reach and clean up after.
When I complained Craig replaced an exposed wooden cutting board, gave me $300 for the
flowers, and let me do the cleaning myself for the $250 in the
estimate. In retrospect, this was ridiculously inadequate as this
cleaning was well above and beyond the normal cleaning resulting from
proper containment. I found Craig to be an aggressive, manipulative
con artist well versed in techniques to cover his @$$.
His flooring people put down the wrong floor, left a strong cigarette odor in my home,
most noticeably in my cabinets (perhaps rummaging around in them),
and told me on my arrival home that I “had the worst floor in the
world” because “it was too shiny”. I had to sort out over
several months getting Mannington to replace the floor properly free
of charge.
In summary, I do not recommend Craig. His legacy was not a good one. However, as far as
one year later, the slab leak seems to have been repaired.
"Dear Angies list members From time to time you run across a customer that believes that all service people are malicious and hoping to take advantage of them. This customer was the most extreme case that I have come across in our 16 years of providing a quality service. We did our absolute best to resolve all conflicts even though all (except the dust issue) were speculative by the customer. We did have an issue with some of the construction dust because of a leak in our dust barrier. I offered to have a professional cleaning service come and do a final cleaning but the owner would not allow this and refused to suggest any solution. We gave the customer several hundred dollars credit on the job to remedy this issue. I am very proud of the service we offer and our general rating and feedback shows that we provide an exceptional service. I feel that we offered this customer an exceptional service as well but her prejudice got in the way of her being able to enjoy the excellent experience we provided her. The customer's furnace was very old and the project was done during very cold weather thus the failing of the unit was related to age and stress and not the dust. The dust was not excessive in any case. I wish [member name removed](customer) all the best."
