Same blue house with shop on side as noted by others. Be advised, Donn is very direct and succinct with little social gab. The man does have skills.
He got an old Sensor TriLite running with a new battery - not the # that I had in it previously from many moons ago when it stopped running. Felt like I got a little indirect scolding for that gaff. He also got my father's very old Sears Traditional Electronic running with a modern style battery (different voltage now than the battery that the watch used originally, as explained to me by Donn) as well as fixing the second hand that had fallen loose. He recommended my nearly 20 year old Bulova Millennia Vibra Alarm be retired with it's broken clasp band and non-functioning secondary alarm dial.
All this was done while I stood and watched. It meant a lot to see my passed dad's watch be resurrected and my first electronic watch from when I wore a younger man's clothes function again. Alas, my Bulova seems destined for the sentimental watch box of memories that the other two have now escaped.
$20 for all of this? Bring your watches here my friends! If you have missed or never experienced business conducted old school style then you owe yourself a trip to The Watch Shop.
hassle. Jewelers are too expensive, and department store watch departments have ruined a couple of watches. Decided to give The Watch Shop a try and was totally satisfied. Batteries changed in a couple of minutes, and price was much cheaper than I've experienced anywhere else.
He quoted me $175, which seemed reasonable to me given the age of the watch and the amount of work needed. He encountered a problem in his work; the serial number stamped by Elgin didn't match their records for what model it was. It did take longer than originally mentioned because of the need to get different parts than the manufacturer originally indicated, but Don didn't charge me for the extra work involved.
Don explained when I should followup on maintenance, and explained just how careful I should be with the watch. Although he doesn't sell chains, he was able to give me a few recommendations on where I could find one; they're not a terribly common item for stores to cary anymore.
I'm very happy with his work, and will certainly return the next time I need maintenance done.
of his house. But it is completely worth your while to seek him out.
He very quickly replaced the batteries in two high end watches I had. One
was a Raymond Weil, and the other a Concord. He changed them out right
in front of me in just a few minutes, and charged $10 total. That's a
much better price than going to a jewelry shop, and he probably knew as
much as them also. He had all kinds of watch repair equipment as well,
so it seems like a very full service place.
If I ever need any work done in the future, I'm definitely going back there.
BTW - this form makes no sense - why do I need to insert an address and year that house was built to enter information about a watch shop - Angie - please fix this.
I drove over to the little blue house on 13th Avenue, noticed the sign that said and quot;please use other doorand quot;, and let myself in. While the outside does indeed look like a residential house, complete with Tomato plants, the indoors is a full watch shop. I handed the watch over and Donn popped it open.
and quot;I fixed this watch twenty years ago,and quot; he said. Then, he gave me the answer I had expected: The watch is not particularly valuable, the band has been replaced, and frankly, the self-winding mechanisms they used in this model (and many older self-winders) are inferior to modern machinery. He told me it wouldn't be worth fixing, so I should wear it until it fails, then throw it away. The watch band, though worn, was more interesting to him -- apparently, it's a fairly peculiar Spydel.
No charge from Donn for the quick analysis -- much better than the Jules Jurgensen repair shop I found online, who needed me to mail it out to them, so they could see what it was worth.
I'll definitely take other watches to Donn for repair. Note that he has no website, and no email address.
