"We do believe that the process should be done together. We bring our inventory book and work through what the different options are so that you can decide which one is best for you."
"Thank you again for giving us feedback. Looking back at our records this looks to be a duplicate review as we just serviced your furnace in February. We appreciate everything that our customers tell us, both the good and the bad. We are constantly striving to improve how we service you. Fortunately, we are able to have some techs that have been with us for quite a while that are both proficient in taking care of the equipment but also determined to make your experience as positive as we can. We know that most of the time when you call us you are not having the best of days. We do everything we can to get things going in a better direction."
"Diagnosing a control board can be tricky with the intermittent and contradictory signals that it will send. It did take us a moment to narrow it down to that control board, and we appreciate your patience in allowing us to do the tests to find that answer. Your furnace is a very efficient model and in excellent shape. It should have many years yet with good operation providing you efficient heating and cooling."
"The black and white of our contract is the minimum standard to which we hold ourselves for our customers, but your case needed more. As the owners of the property you were doing what you were supposed to with the maintenance required by the manufacturer. We have documentation of all of our visits to your property so we know what condition your unit is in, and this problem happened through no fault of your own. We went to the manufacturer where the part was covered under warranty and explained that you had been doing everything exactly correct and that on this part; that should have lasted closer to 20 years than 2; you should not have to pay the labor to install it. Due to your situation and our close relationship with the manufacturer we were able to get them to agree that the labor should be covered in this case as well. We also have the suspected cause for the premature failure and have eliminated that cause from the situation. It has been a pleasure working with you in the past, and I know that we will continue to work well together in the future. We will be seeing you again on your next maintenance. Thank You."
"We are opportunistic in trying to increase the comfort of your home, but only when the time is right. Let me explain our thought process and you can decide if it makes sense for you, We found that your furnace was defective and that the parts would be a significant cost. The second furnace was the same age, and the air conditioners for each system were close behind. Everything had lived it's life although only one of the four pieces was actually dead. When we come across a system that is older than 15 years and either the furnace or air conditioner is to the point where a repair no longer makes sense, we suggest replacing them both at the same time. If one died, the other is often not far behind. We suggest this because of the various rebates that give bonuses when installing the system together. The brand we quoted for example will give $100 for the furnace or $100 for the air conditioner as customer cash back but when combined it will be $800. Some furnaces have high efficient blower motors that help make the air conditioner achieve a higher rating. When combined it can take the electrical rebate from $150 to $350 or $450. We feel it makes sense to grasp these savings when they are available to make the better equipment cost close to the same if not less than the base equipment. Now the other half of your situation is that the when your home was built, the first furnace blocked the second furnace in. Yes you can remove a portion of your wall when you need to change out the second one, but that would cause an additional expense when it was done. Changing out both furnaces with 2 stage units and variable speed blowers would have made a difference in how you feel in your home. The furnaces would have longer run cycles at lower speeds to help provide even heat to all the reaches of your home. The variable speed motor are much quieter so you do not know they are one. They also have a significantly lower amp draw using as little as 1/10th of the electricity of a standard motor. The air conditioners would work with the furnace and thermostat as part of a communicating system to run things at slower speeds to achieve your desired comfort levels without turning on the equipment at full capacity saving your money in utilities. And at the end of the day, if none of that would have been what you really wanted to do, then we could have just changed out the furnace for you as well. We would have been a little bit more than Ray Welters on a base unit, but we would have been competitive. The important thing is that you had time to decide what was best for you, even if that included using a different company. We believe in our high efficient products. We know they improve the quality of living in your home and save you money each month you use them. But we also know that you have to feel good about the choice you are making, and we are very glad that you feel good about the one you made."
"We greatly appreciate you as a customer and hope to continue with our relationship into the future. Looking into our records we just completed your air maintenance this spring and will be back in the fall to get the furnace ready. Hopefully this coming winter will not be as long as the last one, but your system will be ready for it even if it is."
"You have definitely installed your system at the best times that you did. The furnace and air earning the better tax credit at the time was a very smart move. It would have been nice if we could have managed a way to get the required gas to install your on demand hot water heater but sounds like the power vent model is keeping up with your needs. The new deck you installed should be getting a good work out as well with the extended summer we had last year. You should be all set other than routine maintenance for years to come. Thank you for you wonderful words of praise and stay cool this summer."
In response to Southside's comments below, I have sent in the verification/invoices to Angie's List to provide that these statements are accurate. The service was in Bloomington not Minneapolis as referenced. The furnace was old but was still certified as "okay" despite what Southside said in the post. In fact, when the tech came in January he even said that it needed to be replaced, even though they just certified it in October.
"Dear homeowner, I regret to inform you that we have no records of doing any work for you at all. That along with the fact that we do not work in the Minneapolis city boundries and the fact that we do not charge $100 for either a service call or a furnace inspection leads me to believe that you have the wrong company. Our furnace inspection is $189, and we take those inspections very seriously. It is possible a crack could have formed between November and February if the furnace is old and the filters were neglected. It would have been an old and most likely in poor condition furnace for it to happen that quickly though. If we have a certification on a furnace in that is in that poor condition but we cannot find a crack in it, we may not red tag it and shut it off but we will not certify it as "good". We will say that the furnace has been inspected, recommend replacement, and not give it a pass or fail grade. Southside also does not have a $100 service call charge. We do charge more for our calls but our customers feel that the value they receive is worth more than they pay. We stock our vans with an amazing amount of parts to be prepared to handle as many problems as we possible can immediately. We send our technicians to continuing education classes to learn how to diagnose problems more accurately the first time. Our phones are answered by company employees that offer help and advice to our customers. This allows our customers to find the switch to be turned back on to fix some problems themselves saving a service call cost. When our technicians are at your home we offer tips and advice to ensure your system lasts the longest possible time while maintaining the best possible efficiency. Our call price covers up to an hour of time that does not start until we actually get in your home, not when our technician is driving there. Southside does not try to gather customers simply for today. Our goal is to get our customers to feel so confident in our ability that the only company they think of when they want to achieve indoor comfort is Southside Heating and Air Coniditioning."
"Thank you. I recall it was tougher to schedule with you living out of state and your daughter not moved in yet but we did manage. The system you put into your daughter's home should last her with proper maintenance over 20 years. She will join the ranks of our customers who are so comfortable in their homes they completely forget about their heating and cooling system. It will be a pleasure to hear from you in the fall again."
"[member], thank you for your excellent review, but Southside does not have you on our customer list and we do not do electrical work not associated with our HVAC work. We think you may have mistaken us for Southside Electric, an electrical company not associated with Southside Heating and Air Conditioning."
"Southside installed a Ruud model UAKA 2 ton air conditioner on May 6, 1999. We washed the condensor coil and changed the blower fan motor on August 26, 2002. We washed the condensor coil and added 2 pounds of refrigerant on July 16, 2007. The 2007 service call is the last call we have on record for the member, customer number 8065. Washing the condensor coil is a maintanence issue that a homeowner is very capable of doing for themselves. If you have us to your home with our fully stocked service van and our NATE certified technician to do that maintance for you, you will be asked to pay for our services at the rates we have set. The member has a medical condition that requires air conditioning to be in his home so we responded to each of his calls as quickly as we could."
"Southside did dispatch a service technician to the home on January 6, 2011, shuffling our schedule to be available first thing in the morning. He found the high limit to be out causing the furnace to not operate correctly. We do keep well stocked service vehicles but we cannot carry every part we may come across as being needed, so not having that OEM part on his truck for that particular model of furnace, he was required to go to our Lennox parts dealer and return with it. He replaced the part and tested the furnace operation along with the zoning finding it to be all operating at the time of his visit charging the member $328 for the entire service call."
"Thank you for you wonderful comments about us, we hope your Carrier 24APA5 2.5 ton air conditioner is saving you lots of money while keeping you cool. November 12, 1998 we first were able to earn your business by installing a new furnace and humidifier and have seen you many times over the years maintaining your equipment. Thank you."
"Thank you to the members for having us out November 28th, 2006 to service their old and ultimately install a new humidifier. April Aire does recommend changing out the water pad once a year for proper humidification. We only have another visit from you in January 2010 for a solenoid valve, please let us know if you need a new water panel."
"Member, thank you for deciding to use Southside to put a new hvac system in your home. We usually do 1 heat load calculation to ensure that the air conditioner is sized properly for the cooling load, it also shows us the furnace size for the heating load. A smaller furnace brings more energy savings and comfort to you in your home providing it is large enough to heat your home when required. It is not unusual for a furnace or an air conditioner to be made a smaller size, older models often were more concerned with heating and cooling as quickly as possible and not concerned with in home comfort. In the end, we not only did a heat load on your home, we also had two of our distributors do heat loads along with the one you did. The venting was actually in 2" PVC, the owners manual for your sized furnace gives tables for both 2" and 3" venting. The 2' venting is adequate providing the length is short enough allowing for elbows. Southside did change the vent to 3" as per your wishes, both ways are within manufactures specifications. You should receive many years yet of excellent operation from your equipment with proper maintenance."
"Thank you Members for your patronage. You have been a valued customer ever since Bob sold you your Ruud furnace in 1996. Keith does exercise his discretion on calls such as this to make sure that you are served right, and Bob fully supports him in his decisions to do so. Please feel free to call us in the future with any other needs that may arise."
"Thank you Member for choosing us and continuing to call us for your service needs, I have records of 4 more transactions with you since the final inspection. Corrections need to be scheduled in just as an install is, we apologize it took a while to complete, but your first inspection was done on 10/7/05, we were out to do the corrections on 11/18/05, and your final inspection was done on 1/5/06. The contract stated the the utilities rebates would be $400 for the base system, and would be an extra $50 if the customer upgraded to the Ruud UGFD furnace. The Xcel energy rebate for the 14.5 SEER equipment earned a rebate value of $350 and the Centerpointe rebate on a 92% furnace was $100. We have streamlined our rebate process to help move it along more efficiently. Corrections sometimes happen; we do pull permits and have our work inspected by the proper authority. Changes in code happen every so often and we do train our techs to stay current with the updates, but when we do need to make a correction we do come out and bring everything up to code."
"Thank you member for you wonderful review. Our records show we did end up needing to replace that switch under warranty and that we were out later that summer to do an air conditioner tune up for you as well. You have some excellent equipment heating and cooling your home, but if the need arises, please feel free to call us again to take care of your hvac needs."
"Thank you member, we greatly appreciate your choosing us to help you. The Ruud UAMA 2 1/2 ton air and the UGPK10 furnace are both excellent pieces of equipment. When you do your proper maintenance on them, they will last as long as any other piece of equipment available even today."
