I would like to tell you about my recent experience with
Sleep Number beds.
It has been 15 years since I bought a new bed. I had seen
the commercials about the ?Sleep Number? beds and I was curious about them. The
fact that you could adjust you firmness setting sounded very appealing to me at
the time. After seeing the commercials, I went down to the Sleep Number store
in Beaverton, Oregon.
Once inside the store, I had seen many different models,
which was very confusing to me at the time. The sales woman showed us the
different models and we finally settled on two Twin XL beds. When she finally
told me the price $1800 per bed, I almost left the store. After seeing the
construction, I was thinking ?$1800.00 per
unit for a glorified air mattress was a stretch?. However, for $3680.00 the
finish on the beds did look nice. The only catch was that if you returned the
product that you would have to essential pay $400.00 for the trial (200
delivery+200 return). Naturally , we signed
up for their trial program to give it a try. This was a serious mistake that I
would come to regret later.
Sleep Number delivered and set up the products in my house.
Later we found out that they shorted us one remote. When I called about the
remote, they wanted to charge us $100.00 for an extra remote. This did not sit
too well with me at all. After calling and complaining, they reluctantly sent
us an additional remote at no charge. Another issue was the amount of foam in
the bed itself. We had noticed creases in the cover when using adjustable
platforms and this looking terrible not to mention it was a not firm enough
when the bed was fully inflated to 100%. Sleep Number had also sent some
additional foam to firm up the bed.
The final straw was that we discovered latent defect that has
the potential to cause serious injury. On a twin size mattress if you shift
your weight to one side, there is no support on the side rail/boarder of the
mattress. What happens is the air in the air chamber moves and rolls you off
the bed. In my case, I caught myself rolling out of the bed twice. Not being
able to get a good night?s sleep in this bed has led me to return the bed. My
wife had worse experience than me.
Something to think about, Sleep Number marketing has done a
great job marketing an airbed. However, you can save yourself from waiting
around for a delivery and also SAVE yourself $3500.00 by just going out and buying
an adjustable Aero Bed for $129.00. Yes, Aero Bed come with remove control, too.

Mattresses
After the 30 days I decided I was not happy with the mattress and called to return it. I was informed that I still had to pay 381.88 to have it returned. They mislead me in the store and didn't inform me that there would be charge for returning until after I tried to do it. I don't think this a good way to business.
Response from SELECT COMFORT
"Our records indicate that the member purchased a Sleep Number c4 Queen Mattress & Base for $1,399.98 plus tax and Home Delivery & Set up Service for $169.99 plus tax, at our Avenue Peachtree store in Peachtree City, Georgia on February 20, 2011. The member's order totaled $1,679.87 and was paid with a MasterCard. At the time of purchase, all customers are required to sign their Customer Order Agreement. The member's Customer Order read as follows (only pertinent paragraph listed): Returns: No unauthorized returns allowed. If you are returning your mattress, foundation or set purchase under the 30 Night In-Home Trial policy, you must contact our Customer Service Center (800-472-7185) to obtain Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number before returning to us. Once your authorized return has been completely received by us in a good and sanitary condition, we will reimburse the full purchase price of the items being returned a) less shipping or Home Delivery Service & Setup fees. Refunds will be issued to the original payment within 21 days. Unauthorized returns will be destroyed without credit. You are responsible for the risk of loss and for shipping fees for returning or exchanging any product. Home Delivery Return Services are available at an additional cost." The member signed the agreement acknowledging these policies were understood (copy enclosed). Our sales Professionals are expected to provide all prospective customers with the information necessary for them to make an informed decision regarding the purchase of any of our products. The terms and conditions of a Select Comfort purchase are detailed on the Customer Order, which is signed by the customer acknowledging that the terms and conditions are understood. On March 31, 2011, the member called our Customer Service requesting authorization to return her bed for refund and was provided the three return options: You can return it using a carrier of your choice and you are responsible for any shipping charges. Or, we can set up pre-paid shipping labels that will be deducted from you refund (for a fee of 29.99 per box). These labels will include insurance and all the necessary information to ensure timely processing of your refund (Return Merchandise Authorization number, your address, our address, etc.) Or, you can choose our Home Delivery Return Service. Technicians come to your home, disassemble, package and ship the bed back to us. The cost for this service is $199.99 and is deducted from your refund. The member chose Home Delivery Return Service as her method of return. We're sorry the bed did not work out for the member. The terms and conditions are also communicated to the consumer with store signage, as well as an 8.5" x 11" sign in an acrylic holder at each counter space specifically provided for the customer to read before signing their Customer Order Agreement. We have obligation of fairness to maintain for all of our customers and we cannot accommodate the member's request for reimbursement of her Home Delivery & Return Services. Mattresses
The mesh on the pillows had begun to tear. I paid $150 for each of the two pillows, and thought the pillows should last more than 4 years. Their customer service manager informed me they were not willing to replace the pillows. They explained to me the mesh was tearing from normal wear and tear. I am not happy about having these poor quality pillows not being replaced. The manager was rude to me on the phone and informed me I was not going to receive new pillows or any kind of replacement. One gentleman informed me to go to the web and use a $50 coupon for referring someone to purchase a bed from them. I am able to use the coupon for the two new pillows. These pillows cost $300, not $50. I will send these pillows back to them as a result.

Mattresses
They have terrific customer service. They were very prompt with a good explanation of what the warranty covered and no hassles on the exchange of the air pump. I had a new pump within days, and the bed continues to work great. This is the only problem I've ever had with the bed in seven years.

Furniture Refinishing
Talk about an easy experience with Sleep Comfort. They referred me to Legget and Platt, the manufacturers of the bed. The assistants explained that I would be able to make the repair myself and they would ship me the needed part. They were right. It was very easy.
