OLD SCIENCE RENOVATION INC

This was not an easy strip project. The original finish was a factory baked on stain which was harder than a rock. I attempted to do the project myself and quickly realized the stripping was to difficult for me. I emailed Terry the owner a bunch of pictures and he gave a price range for stripping only and then stripping and refinishing. He asked to sample a few doors. After meeting with Terry and having a tour of the shop I quickly knew Terry and his crew were personable and true professionals and they had the proper set up for the wood stripping and refinishing. To save money from hiring someone to work at my home I stripped and sanded the cabinet frames while Old Science worked the main attraction (doors and drawers). Terry the owner went above and beyond and came to my home on his way home from work one evening to check my frame work and give me advice. Once the stripping was completed at the shop I was able to stop by and select the stain color. Don was assigned my project. He was kind, courteous and professional as the same for Dan and the others on the crew. When I picked up the doors and drawers Don took the time to give me advice for staining and finishing the frames. My cabinets are beautiful! I love the fact that Old Science uses the old traditional lacquer finish. I feel I have new friends for life with Terry and crew. I highly recommend Old Science Renovation for any type of wood refinishing of your antiques or cabinetry or any kind of wood refinishing.

I had an interior door stripped of at least 6 layers of paint and then refinished with clear poly coat. They were professional, polite and took the time to answer my questions. They even dropped off the door at my house. The door is beautiful!

It was excellent. They did what they were supposed.

We had an old oak library table that isn't particularly valuable, but has a lot of sentimental value to my wife. However, after years of use (and abuse) the table was falling apart. All the glue was letting go and the table listed to one side. Also, the finish was ruined by years' of over watering the plants it once held.
We looked up several places on Angie's List and made some calls. We settled on Old Science for 3 main reasons: they were quite close, they had great reviews, and the owner seemed in sync with our own goals. We called ahead of time and were walked through the process by Terry, the owner. He offered to pick up the table (for a small fee), but we live close enough that we could strap it to the top of the car and bring it over ourselves. He showed us around the shop a bit, including his own library table that he uses as a desk.
We dropped the table off and were called later with a quote for both repairing and repairing + refinishing. We opted to go for both repair and refinish. We were told that they would first repair it and then call us in to look at finishes. Terry said it may take a few weeks, but it was much less. We went in to choose our finishes and the table was done and ready for pick-up in just another week.
It's clear that both Terry and his staff understand the sentimental value the items they work on hold. They were always so careful about moving items in and out of the shop and always happy to explain how to best care for it once we got it home.
In short, we're happy enough with the outcome that we are saving up to also refinish a breakfront we have that is in need of repair. he only warning I have is that Old Science does not accept credit cards, but that was OK with us.

Terry is AWESOME and very knowledgable about wood working/refinishing. We inherited the furniture and it was in bad shape. My first thought was to take an axe to the pieces and use for firewood, but Terry saw the quality in the furniture and highlighted the quality and design features as well as helped illustrate what the finish product would look like. We called a couple other refinishing companies, but quickly went with Terry based on his knowledge. The total process took around 3-months to complete (we didn't need the pieces back in a hurry) including reupholstering the seats. At the end, we were blown away by how wonderful the finished pieces looked! The same set-up would have cost us twice as much brand new and knowing we have great furniture that has been used by 3 generations is fantastic.

Overall, it went really well. Terry is super nice and professional. He really cares about making sure things that are antique are done well and look how they should. I am still amazed how beautiful this turned out - it is like a piece of artwork. My parents gave this to me and found it in an old farm house - they couldn't believe how great it looked as well. My only complaint would be that it took longer than expected. It really wasn't a big deal to me, but if you are in a rush to get something done you would want to convey this to Terry. I definitely would use this company again to have furniture refinished!

I have a wooden kitchen table with four chairs that my parents probably purchased in the 1950s. It fits perfectly in our kitchen and has sentimental value, but was getting wobbly, and several of the chairs had been repaired many times (we had re-glued the seats and fitted them with metal brackets - they no longer seemed very safe). I didn't know whether it was salvageable, but called Terry at Old Science to see what he thought. He actually thought it was a solid set and worth repairing, so we decided to go for it. In addition, I have an old laquerware sewing chest that I inherited from my mother in law. It is a beautiful piece, and I use it to store jewelry, but one day I opened a drawer and the whole thing fell apart. It needed to be repaired, but I wanted it done well.

Terry and his crew at Old Science picked up the pieces (so to speak) - they pick up and deliver. The estimate he gave is what he charged, although I believe he spent considerably more time on the sewing chest than he planned. He went above and beyond here - as far as I was concerned, all that the chest needed was to be re-glued, but he also did quite a bit of touch up work on the laquer - it had chipped and faded over the years, and he addressed that as well - when I got the chest back, the fading had disappeared as had the chips.

The table and chairs feel sturdy and secure now. They should last at least another 50 years. They removed the old metal brackets we had used to repair the chairs, and took apart, cleaned and re-glued everything.

I think the price that Terry charged was fair - I don't have any basis for comparison, but it seemed reasonable for the amount of work that needed to be done. It was not cheap, but it's not a cheap process.

Terry gave me an estimate of how long it would take to do, and had the project completed within the time estimate. I think if I had some special need to get things done sooner, he would have tried to accommodate that, but I didn't. Both the kitchen set and the sewing box were done within two weeks.

I love the work they did, and the service. I would hire Old Science again in a second, and I would recommend them to friends.

I had inherited some antiques from my parents. The buffet was very scratched up, and he came to the house to give an estimate. Woody was very informative about the other antiques I had in the house (history, how to take care of them, etc.). He came back to the house and fixed the scratches in the buffet on site. It took him about 1 1/2 hours, and I thought the price was extremely reasonable. I would definitely hire them again, in a second.

THE WORK THEY DID ON OUR FAMILY HEIRLOOM WAS AMAZING AND IT IS BEAUTIFUL. TERRY IS WONDERFUL TO WORK WITH. HE CLEARLY KNOWS HIS BUSINESS, AND HE LOVES OLD FURNITURE. WE HAVE NEVER BEEN DISAPPOINTED IN THEIR WORK.

EXCELLENT WORK. VERY HELPFUL WHEN PLANNING THE WORK. TIMELY COMPLETION OF WORK. FINAL FINISH IS HIGH QUALITY, BETTER THAN WE ANTICIPATED. THEY GAVE US A LOT OF GOOD INFORMATION ABOUT PLANNING THE RESTORATION and CARE OF THE PIECE.
