About us

Nook & Cranny was founded in March 2002 by Clare Riordan and Rhoda Mehl. They started the business as a house cleaning service with plans to be the best in the field. Six months into the business, Clare and Rhoda decided to make their own cleaning products. These all natural products are made from Rhoda's grandmother's recipe, using the basics of castile soap, baking soda, salt, lemon juice, and vinegar, empowered by essential oils of peppermint, tea tree and orange. This frees us from toxic chemicals which are not only offensive-smelling and bad for your lungs, but are also harmful to your home's surfaces. Inspired by they're vision and fueled by a passion to serve, they added many service options for their clients including linen services, dry cleaning, errand running and personal assistant service. Over this time they have also developed an extensive concierge network. Recently Nook and Cranny began offering comprehensive Home Management plans including developing a Household Manual. One year has turned into eight years. Along the way they have won many awards and gained local recognition, with our top award as Best Personal Concierge in MN Monthly 2008. Our Goals: Help you save and organize your time. Provide an inexpensive alternative to marriage counseling. Create world peace, one household at a time.

I'm very impressed with this company. They are very thorough in cleaning. They are very kind and on time. They even took my dog for a walk! I have limited mobility due to an injury and my house has been an absolute mess. They helped me declutter, organize, and clean my house. I'm proud of my house again and I have Nook and Cranny to thank for this. I have hired them to come bi-weekly to help me keep it up. I highly recommend this company. A BIG thank you to all who came to help me!

I used N&C for many years since this firm was just a start-up with two kids right out of college.  I was happy with them for the majority of the time.  I travel a lot, and am pretty pleased to come home to a clean bathroom and kitchen floor.  We never complained when they missed something because I told them that I always wanted them to focus most of their attention on bathrooms and the kitchen.  This went on happily until this past year.  The one thing I couldn't live with was lack of punctuality.  I'm not talking coming at noon instead of 9am….I'm talking missing the clean date completely.  I need to know that I can depend on my service and that if I pick-up the house in anticipation of cleaning day, that I'm going to come home to a clean house.  In a nut shell- they were no longer dependable.

This was a horrible experience. First, they quoted me with the angies list coupon $187. They did the easy work first, it took them forever and then told me they would not finish in the time alotted. They also quoted $50/hour but charged me $100/hour because they sent two people. This was never explained or discussed. Final price to clean a four bedroom, 1 1/2 bathroom house was $270. Now you have to admit that is outrageous. My sister has my same size house, and her housekeeper takes 3 hours (just one person), scrubs the kitchen floor on her hands and knees and charges $65.
 
I dusted the furniture up and down. I scrubbed the kitcehn floor on my hands and knees. So bascially they charged $270 to vaccum the floors up and down and clean 1 1/2 very small bathrooms and the stove top. I am shocked at  howlong it took them (I do the whole house myself just as thoroughly in four hours -- one person, same amount of time and I do more work). They left the hardest stuff for last and then told me if I wanted it done it would cost more. It cost $100 more than quoted. This is a shame on you situation. I will never use this service again. I hope that as a result of this write up you are not stupid and hire these people. They do average work and charge a fortune. I think they saw I lived in Edina and took up the price. Just a horrible experience.

"Dear [member name removed] I am very sorry your Nook & Cranny experience was not a good one. Our procedure is to offer you a free in home estimate. At this time we explain our procedures and can gain an understanding about expectations. This has been our procedure for 11 years, the entire run of our business. I feel many of your complaints could have been avoided if we did the estimate. Our hourly rates are $40.00 per hour per person for current clients and $50.00 per hour per person for non- clients. It is a standard to charge per man hour in the service field industry. We usually work in teams of 2 especially on a new job. However, in lieu of not doing the estimate, we did provide email communication and our Assistant Manager at the clean to make efforts to gain an understanding of your expectations and to do a walk through at the end of the clean. Based off what was gathered in our email communications and with our Assistant Manager, we thought you would have been satisfied. Our Assistant Manager was ready to walk through the house with you at the end of the clean and was willing to clean or re-clean the house or areas of the house to your satisfaction. However, due to your level of dissatisfaction, it appeared you were not interested in this opportunity. Again, I am very sorry. Sincerely, Rhoda Mehl, Owner and Manager."

We still use them every other week. I would recommend them to anyone. They bring all ther own cleaning stuff which is really nice. Just pick up the clutter and let them clean.

I couldn't be more pleased with the overall service.  The owner of the company came and did the initial cleaning to determine what needed to be done each visit and how long it should take, After establishing a pattern, she brought in two employees and explained what she expected and how long they had to complete their task.  Recently we have had one employee on a regular basis who sometimes brings a second person to work in tandum.  The fee is approximately, the same the variation is in length of time it takes them to finish but the final product is consistent.

We have been using Nook & Cranny for 10 months now and have been very happy with their work and service.  The estimate was thorough and detailed.  We have bi-weekly cleaning and most often have the same person at our house.   They have been very flexible when we have had schedule changes and needed to postpone or change the date of cleaning.   We have  about 3000 SqFt and 3 bathrooms to clean.  My kids even love to come home after school to the clean house because it always smells great.   We're happy with their work and responsiveness.  Nook & Cranny has been a great change to a previous cleaning service we had that didn't work out.

I used Nook and Cranny cleaning services for about 4  months.  I was very pleased in the beginning.  I met with Molly to review my home and received an estimate.  The estimate was the same as I'd received from another service.  I decided to go with  Nook and Cranny because of the reviews that I'd read.  For the first month, I was very pleased with the service.  Cleaning appointments were scheduled for every other week. One of my requirements was that I have the same cleaning person for each appointment.  This worked well until the initial person left the company.  After that until I discontinued the service, it seemed that there was a different person(s) for each appointment.  Once I was even told that the same person from the previous week would be there for the next week.  Well, I came home early to find that there were two people cleaning and neither was the person that I was told would be cleaning.  I was told me that there had been a change in the cleaning schedule.  This did not make me any happier as  my objective of not allowing different people access to my home was not met.  The final straw occured in November.  I had a scheduled cleaning on the Wed. before Thanksgiving Day.  I was busy all day running errands for the holiday dinner that I would be preparing.  Well, the cleaning person must of had other things to do as well.  The cleaning was poorly done - wood floors not mopped, carpets not cleaned very well (you could see the tracks were the vacuum cleaner was ran and notice the spots that were missed).  Because of the holiday, I could not call to have the place recleaned.  So, I spent my Wed evening and Thurs monrning cleaning my home for the evening guest.  When I did call to request that they return and reclean my place, I was told that they would credit me for 50% of the cleaning fee.  After this incident I decided to discontinue the service.  I would not recommend using this service for on going house cleaning.

I am very impressed with this company. They fit me in in a very timely fashion, they arrived on time, and they did a really thorough job. The coupon was for 4 rooms or 3 hours, so I asked them to clean my first level and then if they had time to do a few other areas, but this was over the 4 room limit. When I came home, I was so pleased to see that they got through my whole list, even the additional areas. I will use them again, for sure!

It is very good. They are very reliable and very trustworthy, as well as being quite flexible in accommodating any particular requests or scheduling changes I make. I have not compared prices, but they are extremely pleasant, and I plan to continue to use them.

We have used them for five years. We've been really happy with the people that do the cleaning. When there have been concerns or if we needed to change the day for cleaning or things that have happened with the cleanings, they have been very responsive. There were two people and sometimes three when needed, that come out.

Firstly, the reason the price is zero is that I bid on and won a gift certificate for three hours' cleaning at a silent auction benefiting my neighborhood organization. I did pay money for this, just not to them. I planned to call them to arrange for cleaning when it looked like I was going to have new tenants. By the time I got organized and called, it was less than 1 week before the move in date. At first I was told that they usually need about ten days notice, but then someone called back to say that they would be able to get me in because I wanted them on a Monday, a typically slower day for them. The cleaners were late, but they had a trainee with them so I got three people for the "price" of two and they were a whirlwind of cleaning once they arrived. The lead cleaner was very gracious about the gift certificate and told me it looked like they were going to finish with what I had asked for with time to spare, so I could have them do a few more chores if I had anything in mind. I asked them to clean the tops of the fan blades and take a pass through the basement which they completed in time to just cross paths with the new tenants bringing in their stuff. I was very grateful for their help on a very chaotic day. I was glad I could give the house over to new tenants clean (& non-toxic at that).
