We decided to get a second opinion and called a company that has LOTs of positive reviews on Angie's list. That company only cleans drains. They do not repair or line them. So, they had no vested interest in our line being broken or intact.
The second company started with a kinked line. got through to 100 ft on the first try, and brought up a bunch of tree roots. The provider worked his way up to a 6 inch cutter blade and out to 100 ft consistently. He observed no evidence of line breakage (no sand, not even in the roots, and the blade was not shiny). The cost of the successful cleaning was less than half the cost of the failed attempt! The second provided recommended proactively cleaning the line every 12 months. I will follow that advice with provider number 2 and will not be using Mr. Rooter again.
Complaining to the office the next day got me nowhere. They had charged my account already and did not seem to care.
I called another plumber the next day and he said the most it should have cost was $300. Such a rip off!!! Do not use these people.
"We would appreciate the opportunity to talk with you about your review. I checked our system and I can not find your information or any late night appointments around your review date. I'm wondering if you have us confused with another company with a similar name to ours? Please give us a call at your earliest convenience so we can clear up any misunderstandings. 763-551-0555"
Without warning the water drain in our basement started to flood the laundry room. I immediately assumed the main water pipe was clogged and suggested to my husband that we call someone to come out and fix it ASAP, as we could not flush a toilet, run a faucet or do laundry. My husband contacted Mr. Rooter at about 7:45pm and was told that someone would be arriving within the hour. Adam arrived at our home about 45 minutes later and was quick to confirm my diagnosis. Adam gave us two options to clear the clog, the "Hydro-Scrub" ($1200) or (I can't remember their term) snaking through the pipe to break up the clog using a large, loud machine ($480). We chose the cheaper option. Adam was very professional and courtious (though he did not wear shoe covers into our newly finished basement). He answered all of our questions, was friendly and seemed knowledgeable. He was there about 60-90 minutes and the problem was resolved and will hopefully stay that way. He cleaned up the area nicely and seemed to be very careful removing and replacing our toilet. Neither my husband or I are knowledgeable in the area of plumbing so I have no idea if this price point is a complete rip-off or not. Basically, we chose Mr. Rooter because they would come out for "free" later at night. Overall, we were happy to have the problem resolved quickly so that we could resume washing clothes, showering and using the bathrooms without our laundry room flooding! We used a 10% off coupon from their website so it ended up costing $440.
,Our house was built in 1937 and the main line to the street is very old.
After running the washing machine, the water backed up in the laundry room, simultaneously the toilet line backed up in the furnace room. Good times!
The technician was Emanuel B. He was professional and polite. He tried to clear the drain using a cable -- which was a $447 charge. But because of the size of the line and the root mass he needed to bring in the "Hydro Scrub". This is super high-pressure water which literally blows the roots to kingdom come! The cost of this was $1462.80.
While doing the "Hydro Scrub" he discovered that the tiles in the line were "offset" and he recommended that the line be replaced. He gave us an estimate to do this and it came to over $10K. Yes, that's right $10,000 to dig up the frozen yard and reline the main sewer line to the street. We decided to wait on replacing the entire line because the technician guaranteed that this work would last at least 6 months.
Now, just 2 months and 4 days later, on a weekend, of course, the line is CLOGGED AGAIN. <NOTE: Here's where I was quite upset with Mr. Rooter.> There was NO GUARANTEE in place--because Emanuel's guarantee was verbal. And for some reason the "warranty" column on my invoice was X-ed out. My technician thought that we should not have to pay for it, but his manager requested that we pay him and they would sort it out on Monday. The warranty/guarantee for the original work on December 12 became a game of "he-said-she-said" and the technician was clearly stuck in the middle.
Because it was a weekend, and because I needed the drain to be cleared, the tech cleared the drain and charged me $375. He applied a coupon we found online. Naturally, I was really upset by this. And was appalled at the weekend customer service.
HOWEVER -- on Monday, I emailed and followed up by phone with their customer service person and she REFUNDED MY MONEY!
This made me quite happy -- they listened to what I had to say and were courteous and understanding.
Turns out, that roots can't continue to grow without the energy provided by the leaves-- I checked Google! The roots causing this back-up were missed on the first service in December.
I will be getting multiple bids for replacing the line as soon as spring time comes, and will consider Mr. Rooter. Hopefully, we don't have any more issues with water backing up.
** Update **
The Company did someone else out and they did what should have happened the first time, they ran auger through, cleared the drain and it is running well. They did not charge for the second call. There was no charge for the expensive special equipment that was used the first time through.
They cared about the job, not just getting it, but doing it well.
