Mike gave us an estimate over the phone of $100 but also made it clear that if he didn't think he could fix it he would not charge us anything for looking at it. I took the PS3 to Mike's place and he took a lot of time and trouble to explain to me exactly what was wrong with the system and what he would do to repair it. Later that day, he called me back to come and pick it up. We were victims of the dreaded Yellow Light of Death which happens when the system gets too hot as a result of being played too long.
When I visited him again, he gave me detailed information about how to avoid the problem in the future as well as lots of useful and interesting information about using the computer in general. He was able to explain everything to me clearly and patiently and offered to be of service with his expertise in the future to help me with future computer projects. In the past, we had mailed the PS3 directly to Sony to be repaired and it had cost about $200 and taken about 2 weeks. We went back again for service a few months later (we had not followed his advice closely enough and our PS3 was pretty old) and he fixed it again at a discount ($50) for repeat business. He suggested that we invest in a newer model PS3 that is slimmer and doesn't heat up as badly. He does not sell new PS3s himself so we got a new one from Amazon.
He was very competent and went out of his way to be helpful.
