While still living in Minneapolis, I contacted Marva's Place to consign some furniture as we were about to move out of state. Marva's took possession of our high quality Baker arch back sofa & chair in Jan 2018 and they sold it in Feb. 2018. Consignment was a 50/50 split of sale price. They never sent proceeds to me, and only communication from them after sale was an email in March 2018 acknowledging sale & that I was owed nearly $600 (after already paying them a required $300+ to come to my home and pick up furniture). Marva's operations person & husband, Dwayne, wrote in an email that their business model has changed--they were closing their showroom & would do internet consignment sales only. He also indicated he hoped to send our proceeds in next 30 to 60 days (delay = violation of our signed contract for payout). It is now about 12 months later, and still no payment of my share of sale proceeds, and no communications, despite Marva's still having a "business" online. My phone calls and emails to Marva's have all been ignored. This is NOT a reputable business. I consigned with them at a time when we were moving out of state, so suing Marva's in MN small claims court may not be cost effective. Beware of this "business", as they do pay their consignors, and are therefor not reputable. I now see other online posts of customers who also have not been paid by Marva's, so this is a pattern of non-payment of money owed. Beware.

Caution! Think Twice Before you Consign With Marva's Marva's Place customer service is so bad that its almost comical...... Almost The experience I had today, as a consumer, was unlike anything I had ever experienced before. Rude, Insulting, unprofessional, and unsophisticated are just a few words that come to mind. But before I begin I wanted to say that I have never written a bad review before nor was I planning on writing this one. I was willing to let it go....after of course I told the story to my designer, my family and all my friends. I saw no need to make a formal complaint. After all, losing a customer should be enough. Lost sales = lost revenue. The only one taking the hit here is the store....OR so I thought until I remembered that it was a Consignment Store! Their loss is your loss which is why I decided to write this review. It started when I walked in the door. There was no one to greet me (no big deal) so I began to look around. I found a lovely chinoiserie style buffet sitting by the front door. Instantly I knew that this piece would work perfectly with my black lacquered Chinese Chippendale chairs. I took a closer look at the piece. Opening the doors of the buffet to determine what type of storage was available and also to make sure the doors and drawer worked as they should. Lets not forget that while it might be considered "high-end" consignment - its still USED Soon a young gentleman came over to ask me what I needed? - literally - he said "what do you need"? I told him "I was just browsing" thinking that I would see what else they had to offer before committing to this piece. He frowned and said angrily " You are not allowed to touch or open anything" My shocked response was "Really ...why???" "Because our customers break things - thats why!" Still in a state of disbelief I said "well if I can't open anything - how will I know if it works?" referring to the condition of the piece. He responded "you'll just have to take our word for it"! By this time he was getting very combative and I realized that we were the only two people in the store so, in effort to calm his escalating anger, I asked if I had said or done something that offended him? YEP -thats right - ME - the Customer - extending the olive branch in the hopes of improving customer relations! Not surprisingly, he ignored my gesture and went on to accuse me of willfully breaking the "No Touch Rule" which he claimed was clearly worded on the store's website and restated on all store signage. CRAZY - Right???? This is a furniture store not the Guggenheim!! I said that I didn't recall seeing that rule on the store's website or its signage - not that I would be looking for it. However, luckily for me, I happened to be standing right next to a large sign detailing the store's policies and procedures. I read it word for word. No rule anywhere. I was done. I couldn't take it anymore. Seriously, Ive had more articulate debates with my 7 yr old niece. I wanted to walk out but I didn't. I didn't want to give him the satisfaction of thinking he had run me out.....I know, who's the 7yr old now? So, I walked around and found three more things I wanted to buy including an amazing hand knotted rug - darn! Oh well, there are plenty of other places in town and online who deserve and want my business.

I placed a Thomasville dining room table with 8 chairs, a buffet and china cabinet on consignment with Marva at Marva's Place. Someone came to my house picked up the furniture and supposedly took it back to Marva's place to sell. I checked in with Marva a couple of months after she had my furniture to see if she had sold it. I was told that it had not yet sold and that I would be contacted when it did sell. After few additional months of not hearing back from company regarding the selling of my furniture, I was finally able to reach someone. When I asked if my furniture had sold, I was told that I no longer have any furniture. They claim that they were unable to sell it. No one contacted me once the initial 120 days of consignment had expired to either pick up my stuff or extend the consignment period. As result they claim that I have fortified my nearly $10,000 worth of dining room furniture that was in excellent condition when it left my house. They won't tell me where the furniture is so I can pick it up and they have no intention of paying me for my furniture. The person I spoke with was confrontational and hung up on me. Beware if you plan on doing any business with these people! They are unprofessional and run an unethical business. Legal & law enforcement actions pending.

Description of Work: My sisters and I had a very negative experience with Marva's Place, which for a high-end furniture consignment store is extremely disappointing and, frankly, very maddening when we consider what we lost in our unclaimed furniture. We brought a van load of furniture, lamps, pictures, and decorator items to Marva's Place from my Mom's estate in November 2015. Marva's contract states that we are responsible for keeping track of the 120 days she has the items on consignment and then we are to either pick them up or allow her to dispose of them as she wishes. We had indicated on her contract that we would want to pick them up. My first complaint, and this is major, is that Marva failed to verbally inform us or emphasize to us in any way that it was our responsibility to contact her at the end of the 120 days - and this through two separate deliveries to her store, by my husband and I the first time, and the other time by one of my sisters. I fully concede that we should have read the contract more carefully, but I also know from others who have used other high-end furniture consignment stores in the Minneapolis area that those stores verbally emphasized to them, more than once, that their clients needed to mark the date on the calendar for pick-up of unsold goods as that was their responsibility. My next complaint has to do with the fact that out of 21 items we left with Marva, she sold only 1 in the 120 days she had our things. Thirdly, when I called her and left a message asking her to call me regarding our unsold items (after the 120 day date), she sent an email reminding me of her contract verbiage. When I called again and left a message saying I still needed to speak to her, she failed to return my calls - to 3 messages. I finally emailed her a letter and also sent it USPS detailing my complaints and disappointment in her behavior as an owner of this business. Never heard a word from her over a period of perhaps two months of trying. Interestingly, when I first tried to contact her we looked at her website and found all our unsold items, less one that had apparently been sold after the 120 days. Within a period of time after trying to reach Marva, all our unsold items disappeared from her website. Though it is the seller's responsibility to contact Marva at the end of the 120 days, it seems to me that this is a very dishonest way to do business - by not clarifying and emphasizing that fact at the time of delivery of the furniture. And her refusal to talk with me is disheartening and shows a lack of professionalism, at the very least. One further thought... What a nice way to make a 100% profit rather than a 50% profit on the unclaimed items! We are disgusted with Marva's lack of response to our inquiries, her unprofessionalism, and also the fact that we lost the 19 unsold items. I would strongly urge others to seek out another consignment shop!

Delivery was on time, but merchandise was more of a bait and switch. Would not exchange or refund our money. Merchandise was not as advertised - not even close.
