It has been 13 years since MFM re-roofed my house, but I'm just becoming aware of quality problems that are now becoming an issue.
They were originally timely with the work and cleaned up afterward. The only problem I had at the beginning, and it's big one, is they used far too long nails around the edges where my old St. Paul house has a beautiful overhang with a tongue and groove bottom. The nails perforated the overhand all around the house with hundreds, maybe a thousand, places where the wood splintered. Even painting this area is now a problem with all the nails protruding. This is not a problem that can be fixed and I've accepted it.
Now, however, I have whole sheets of shingles that are siding down from the roof into the roof valleys. I had a roof inspection and discovered that nearly all the shingles he could see had the nails countersunk to the point where many of them no longer can hold the shingle. MFM must have used too much pressure in their pneumatic nailers and they drove the nails too deep.
Unfortunately, MFM's labor warranty expired 3 years ago.

Due to our windows deteriorating we decided to put in new triple pane windows. We contacted a number of window companies and had numerous estimates. Almost every company that came to give us an estimate told us that their windows were the best on the market, they also had special deals if we signed that day. Maintenance Free Mn came and gave us an estimate and of course told us about the product and then with no pressure just left and said to call them if we wanted them to do the work. We contracted with them a few days later. They said the windows would be delivered in about 5 or 6 weeks. It took a week longer than expected but we were not in a hurry. They called and gave us a weeks notice for installation date. The workers showed up on time and were very friendly. Watching them work you could tell that they were experts at window installation. After completion of the install, they walked us around to make sure were were satisfied with the work. They cleaned us any mess they made outside and they were very careful not to make a mess inside during the install. I would recommend this company to anyone considering replacing windows in their home.

Our experience was very good. They were great. They did a great job. One of the reasons we went with them was pricing. They were on the affordable side. Actually, they came out in September and gave us a bid on a couple of windows down in this level and now, they are coming out again on Sunday because we did not move on that bid and we want to move on that now. So, they are going to do measurements and put in three new windows for us.

The salesman was rude and a bully. He threw a fit when I wanted to think about the decision some more. Once I had signed, he had the nerve to go on and on and on wasting my time talking about his family. Then the crew came to do the job. My neighbor complained that the crew was messy and went in her yard and left their trash there. They didn't do things they said they were going to do: 1) they didn't rehook up my antenna, 2) they didn't clean up thoroughly, and 3) they didn't come back after a year for an inspection. The job was very messy with nails poking through the facia. They hounded me for the money even before the job was complete to my satisfaction. Now (February 2010) I have leaks (after only a little over 3 years) and they aren't responding to my request for help.

The sales people were good. The price was comparable to others. On the day the windows were to be installed, they said they would be there at 8:00 am. At 8:30 am, we had to call to see if the installers were coming out. They did arrive (about an hour late). In the dining room, instead of cutting out a 3/4" edge and making the window larger to fit as it should, they put a non matching trim piece around the window that has uneven gaps and does not look good. While installing the bathroom window, there were gaps on either side (3-4") that were not insulated at all. It makes no sense to install an efficient window without insulating next to it. We can't access it to insulate. We were very disappointed with the way windows are installed. This is probably not unique to this company, however it was not a quality job by any means.

The $600 was for one window. We had an old window with rotting brick mold that needed to be replaced. The salesman wrote down a quote to replace brick mold and the window. I was not home when the window was replaced, so when I came home to look at it I found that I could still put my fingernail through the side window jambs. Also, the caulking job was poorly done. I called the company and they sent the crew out to replace the side jambs. The old caulking was not completely removed before putting on the new caulking so it does not have a smooth looking finish. Overall, we have a new window, but we're not happy that we had to call them out to do the job right and that we have caulking that looks bad. We will be getting a new window company in the future.

The Salesman was very easy to work with, no pressure. There were some delays getting the siding (they had to re-order because they originally ordered the wrong kind). The window installers were quick and friendly. They did leave a little mess behind - but not too much. We ordered replacement windows (not new construction). We were told that we would loose a small amount of glass space (1 to 1.5 in), but due to the type of windows we originally had (where the trim was part of the window) we ended up loosing much more... over 4 inches on some windows. They knew this at the time that they measured the windows. They DID NOT TELL ME. So it was a Big Surprise when they actually installed them. If I had known ahead of time, I may have chosen to go with new constructions windows instead - or at the very least, would have been prepared for it. I am NOT happy about this aspect. They did a good job installing the siding. A little issue with roof - didn't speak English, but OK overall.

They were great, they came when they were supposed to, the work was excellent, and they cleaned up after themselves nicely.

I was very impressed with the service from start to finish. They did what they said they were going to do on time and with few problems. The quote I received was almost $4,000 less than the competition and I received 40 year GAF shingles instead of 30 year shingles that the competition quoted me. They didn't tarp a very small section of the roof and it did rain on it, but that turned out to be just fine after it dried. My roof is very steep and I was thinking about doing it myself, but I am so glad I had the professionals do it.

Horrible is an understatement. Weeks without work and no reason given. Had to spend a week in hotel because windows, which were done for 3 weeks, not installed and no insulation and temp down to 25! Roof not tarped, asked 3 times for it to be done, rained 2'' and ruined DR ceiling and rug below it in basement. Used our DR Hutch as workbench, took off tarp, wiped sheetrock mud on all sides. No cleanup in basement or addition. Ruined chest - used as cutting board - cuts on top front. Ruined rug - asked for 4 weeks for cleanup - contractors ground debris into rug - never cleaned up - we had to throw. Oak toilet seat ruined when worker stood on it instead of ladder - large gouges in oak. I will have to hire a repair person to fix all sheet rock issues, plumbing issue and lighting issue. We will never have them back in our home. It should not take 5 months for 300 sq ft. Incompetent, no customer service.
Response from MAINTENANCE FREE MINNESOTA
"WE NOW HAVE EVERYTHING RECTIFIED WITH THIS JOB. WE PAYED HOMEOWNER FOR DAMAGE TO OAK HUTCH (EVEN THOUGH CUSTOMER WAS SUPPOSE TO MOVE) THE ROOF OVER PORCH WE DID WAS DONE THAN RAINED HARD SO CEILING WAS PARTIALLY DAMAGED. WE TORE DOWN AND REPAIRED CEILING WITH ALL NEW SHEET ROCK AND SPRAYED CEILING. NO WORK WAS PERFORMED FOR 2 WEEKS BECAUSE WE HAD TO WAIT FOR CUSTOMER TO HAVE FUNDS FOR FLOORING. I TALKED TO CUSTOMER ABOUT SHEET ROCK PROBLEMS AND THEY HAVE BEEN RESOLVED. THE JOB SHOULD NOT HAVE TAKEN SO LONG AND OUR PROJECT COORDINATOR HAS BEEN ASSIGNED ANOTHER ROLE AND THE OWNER HAS TAKEN OVER WITH ROOM ADDITIONS. THANKS, RYAN RASSATT - PRESIDENT"

Our free estimate resulted in what seemed like a very reasonable cost. we were told there could be expense if roof decking needed replacement. Not in estimate. We did receive timely call of when the work would begin and they showed up on time. The work went well, no loud music was played, and they were courteous. When the city inspector came after the tear off, they had to wait some time because the plywood was not delivered yet and this held them up a bit. They removed rotten wood boards and took Polaroid pics of the work for the inspector who never returned again. Work was efficient, clean up was fairly good. Some old shingle pieces remained in our pine tree and blew off for about 2 or 3 days following the work. Problem came with siding repair where it gapped. First attempt was not satisfactory. I took pictures to show MFMinn inspector, then the work was redone satisfactorily. They were patient with some payment glitch on our part. I requested updated payment copy. Not gotten yet.

They arrived on time, worked very quickly and neatly and the windows are very attractive. The screens were too small and they reordered them and the correct ones fit perfectly. I would certainly use this company again in the future.
