They did everything well except to directly supervise the people doing the work. The guys who were doing the work didn't put the new underlayment in which was the main reason we were doing it. Most of the workers didn't speak English. We had to get a hold of the people from the company because of that. Other than that I was happy with them. They got somebody here within an hour and made it right. They supervised it and made sure that they did what they were supposed to do.
Description of Work: Lakewoods Remodeling Inc did a new roof and insulation. They replaced lot of the underlayment. They finished the job yesterday.

I am very pleased with the work that was performed as well as the price. This was a relatively small roofing job as it was just a repair, but I was still treated as a valuable customer.

I have had to find many contractors on Angie's List, and this has been my only choice so far. Wish I'd paid more attention to the negative reviews. If past reviews are any indication, there will be a long rebuttal from Lakewoods as to why I was a bad client. My response to that is this: Lakewoods has had to respond to several negative reviews; this is the only negative review I've written. Lakewoods was not the cheapest bid I received. They were nearly twice the next lowest bid, but I assumed that meant I could rely on them to get the job done quickly and correctly, particularly since my tarp had already blown off twice, and I was in a rush to get a roof on my addition before any really big storms hit. Each time I talked to Steve Miller, he was very accommodating and kept saying that he'd like to get the job done right. However, this had no correlation with what ended up happening when the crew showed up. The work that was done seemed very rushed and haphazard, and the intent was clearly to get done and get out as quickly as possible. 1. Windows I had installed window pans and paper, but later saw websites that indicated that those materials should not be used together. I mentioned several times that the pan and paper needed to be removed and redone; I even offered to remove the existing pans myself. Steve said and quot;don't bother, my guys will handle it.and quot; Well, they and quot;handled itand quot; by installing the windows over the pans, as-is. I pointed this out to Steve as soon as I got home and saw what had happened. First Steve and then the guy onsite pushed back, saying that and quot;if this was my house, that is what I'd do.and quot; They had someone from the and quot;State of Minnesota Stucco Boardand quot; or something leave me a voice mail. (Meanwhile, Tyvek's own website says that installing Tyvek Flexwrap sill over construction paper is and quot;unproven.and quot;) The crew installed a 2x6 window in a 2x4 wall, and commented as they were doing so, and quot;this is weird. Why would he do this?and quot; Not bothering to see the correct 2x4 window, which was sitting in the garage, unwrapped, several feet away. They pulled out the old window and replaced with the correct window when I pointed out the mistake. However, that means now I'm trying to resell a window that has already been installed, rather than a new window in the box. Lakewoods never offered to compensate for that (or any other) mistake. 2. Doors The front door that was moved from the back looked like it was torn out of the front of the house like a wrecking ball. Rather than trying to get the door at the right level, the crew and quot;temporarily mountedand quot; in the back entryway with screws, so i could move it to the correct height after the flooring was complete (If I'd wanted to install the door myself, I would have installed the door myself!). This was AFTER I told Steve multiple times to assume that the floor in the entryway would be 1 1/2and quot; thick. Every time I asked Steve to come back and address the trim, I asked them to move the door down to a reasonable height. This never happened. The sill is over 3and quot; above the level of the subfloor, which is clearly excessive. 3. New trim (soffit and fascia) If I had to guess, I'd say the crew started working from both sides and did not plan for how they would meet in the middle. Not surprisingly, where the two soffits meet -- RIGHT ABOVE the back door, and very visible -- there is a several-inch difference in levels. This was attributed to mine being an old house that is out of level, and left as-is, with a piece of trim covering up the mistake. They left huge gaps between the soffit and fascia (they came out and corrected the worst of these). The corners where the new and old trim met were not even close to aligned. After several calls and conversations, they eventually came out and corrected those, but one of those corrections involves a swooping piece of trim that is obviously curved, even looking at it from the ground forty feet away. That corner also separates away from the adjoining trim, creating a convenient entryway into my attic for insects, birds, etc. 4. Roofing Not much to say here, other than that I was not happy with the amount of wear-and-tear on the high-end shingles I put on the house; the guys were obviously very rough as they ran across the shingles in the process of putting the roof down, and if you climbed up and looked closely, you'd assume that it was ten years old, not brand new. Meanwhile, as the work was happening, Lakewoods was very unresponsive, and I never knew when people were coming or going, what work had happened, or what work was going to be repaired. Horrible experience, made worse by the fact that every other contractor I have found on Angie's List, without exception, has been outstanding to work with. I would strongly recommend against having Lakewoods do any work on a project, no matter how small.
Description of Work: Putting an addition on my house. Lakewoods bid on four things: New soffit and fascia around addition Replaced existing roof and new roof on addition Installed five new windows in addition Moved front door to back door & installed new front door They actually said they would bid on a small staircase, but never followed through on that. In retrospect, I'm glad.

Response from Lakewoods Remodeling Inc
Member contacted Lakewoods approximately 1-1/2 months after we had provided him with a bid for his project. He was very anxious and wanted us to start asap because the contractor he had previously hired had abruptly backed out of the project. In our business and economy that is not something you hear of very often however it is now clear to us why that contractor chose not to work on this project. This member needed us to finish an addition on his home which he had started but was unable to complete. It is always a challenging way for a contractor to start a project when a homeowner buys all of their own materials and gets in over their head doing the labor themselves. As the Project Supervisor for Lakewoods I pride myself on timely and accurate communication with customers and always informed him of what work would be done and when. The only lack of communication came when this member was out of town and did not respond to my phone calls or emails. Addressing the issues: 1. Windows - yes we did install them over the pan and paper because that is the correct way per MN building code. We are required to follow MN laws and regulations and warranty our work. Our window installer whom has installed over 25,000 windows and doors and Mr. Steven Pedracine (Executive Director of the Minnesota Lath and Plaster Bureau) advised the member this is the proper way to install the pan flashings in a stucco application. I will hold my trust in the MN building code and the experts versus information that was supposedly found on the internet. The 2x4 window that was installed in the 2x6 wall was an error on our part. All of the windows were stored in the garage and these 2 homeowner supplied windows have the same opening size except for the 4” vs. 6” jamb depth. We were never asked to compensate him for the window. He even told us he was going to install that window in his garage as it was his ordering error. We would be more than happy to compensate him what he paid for the window. 2. Doors - We removed the front door properly and efficiently. We then discovered that the member had framed in the new opening in the new location with the wrong dimensions. Although it was not in our contract to do so we made the adjustments needed to install the door. As for the height of the door, the flooring was not installed yet. The homeowner did not know what kind of flooring he was installing. It is impossible to set the door at the correct height without knowing this information. This member outright told our installer and project manager “put the door at whatever height you think it should be at”. We put the door in with screws that could very easily be backed out to adjust the height after the flooring is installed. If this member wanted the door at the exact height he should of had his flooring selections complete. 3. Trim - Yes there was a difference between the original house and the addition where the trim meets of about 4” because that is how this member framed his addition. We corrected this for him using the best method possible at no additional cost. The only other option would have been to readjust his framing to correct the errors at an additional cost to him. I discussed this option with him and he declined to have it done. 4. Roof - The 30 year shingles this member chose were installed with the highest standards we use on all of our roofing projects. The only problem with the roof was when we found some rotting wood that needed to be replaced. Again - this was not in our contract but we replaced it for him at no additional charge as a courtesy. Yes sir we are submitting a rebuttal to your comments. We are a proud A rated company on Angie’s List and owe it to the other members and to our many satisfied customers to address your unfounded negative comments. Any issues this member brought to our attention where handled promptly and professionally. It seems almost every large scale project that homeowners try to general or work on themselves always tend to go over budget (just watch 1 episode of “Flip This House”). I truly feel the end motivation here was just an unwillingness to fully pay from the get go or he just ran out of money.

Last winter we had ice dams on the roof and the contractor we hired to deal with the interior damage recommended a roof inspection in the spring. We had someone out, got bids, and actually had hired another company to do the work based on the recommendation of a neighbor. We were a long way down their scheduled but expected them at the end of May. Then they backed out when the tornado hit North Minneapolis (I wonder why?!). Luckily I had also joined Angie's List and had an estimate from the good people at Lakewoods. They leapt into action as soon as the contract was signed and we had a new roof, etc. within short order. despite all the mayhem and craziness going on in our area with tornado cleanup. Though we did feel bad very briefly for all our neighbors waiting for roofs, it wasn't like we didn't need one too. Steve was great to work with. The office staff is wonderful. The crew was friendly, FAST, clean. My yard looked better after they left than before they got there and I know that's a difficult achievement when roofing! I got exactly what I asked for, wanted, and was in the contract. We had a little miscommunication about one part of the work and it was cleared up immediately, no fuss, no time wasted, no problems! I nearly hope for another disaster so I can work with them again, strange but true!
Description of Work: Mid June. Old roofing material tear off, new shingles, new flashing, vents, etc., new gutters and downspouts.

I received several quotes for the roof repair and for the cedar siding. Lakewood was the most competitive. They arrived at the scheduled time for the initial estimate. We had some additional questions about the leakage in the interior of the home which was caused by the hole in the roof. He was very patient with my wife and her questions. Later that day, we were emailed an estimate which was very convenient and self explanatory. We agreed to the work. They immediately got some out to patch up the hole while we waited a week to get the matching shingles in. The cedar siding repair was done faster.

They came, looked at the roof, made suggestions and best guesses and told us to call them it the ideas don't work and we can discuss a more invasive solution, like replacing the flashing by the chimney and/or the roof. I will definitely get their estimate first when we do replace the roof, which they said has a few more good years to go.
Description of Work: Our ceiling in our living room was leaking but we have a second floor. Lakewoods recommended that we coat the chimney with sealant you can get at Home Depot and see if that keeps the water out. Also told me how to get rid of the algae growing on places of the roof and recommended we vacuum out the air intakes in our overhangs to increase the airflow to the house. Lots of advice that we will act upon. No charge.

I contacted Steve Miller at 612-328-8561 for the quote on the project. I contacted him on 4/5/2011 and he came out 4/6/2011AM right on time for appointment. On 4/7/11 received a written quote via E-Mail. On 4/11/11 I called Steve to set up shingle selection and discuss material for flat roof and to review the quote. He came the same day early in AM. The shingles would be Owens-Corning 30 yr algae resistant. For the flat deck roof they would use a rubber membrane roof system. Steve set Monday 4/18/11 for the work barring any bad weather. On Monday at 7:00 a.m. the dumpster arrived, at 8:00 a.m. Steve arrived, and shortly thereafter a crew of 5 workers arrived. Steve introduced me to the crew leader and the work began. I was impressed how little rest time the workers took. The old shingles were removed in about 2-3 hours, material arrived and placed on the roof by the delivery company. Steve Miller stopped by after lunch to see how things were going. One real positive thing, he was always available by phone. They added 2 additional vents on each level to help prevent winter ice build-up.The price included all new color coordinated roof vents. For the flat deck roof, some plywood was replaced before the special system could be installed. The job was completed by 5:00 p.m. the same day. They had placed throws over all bushes, plants, etc. All scraps were cleaned up, yard and driveway swept with magnet for nails. Steve Miller came out Tuesday a.m. 4/19/11 to inspect the job and discuss how it went. This was the best experience I have ever had with a contractor. All aspects of the job were completed on time as promised. Price per estimate. Steve was knowledgeable, professional and always willing to help and recommend. If you have a project the Lakewoods is able to handle, call Steve Miller at 612-328-8561 he is a great person to work with.
Description of Work: Contact Steve Miller, Project Supervisor 612-328-8561 To tear off shingles and replace on 2 level home, room off of garage and flat deck roof. The deck roof is fairly flat and some repair was necessary because of leakage. Here's what happened: (Sung to the tune of the Beatles "A Day in The Life") Woke up, fell out of bed, dragged a comb across my head. I looked out side and saw roof ice, Said to my wife "this doesn't look nice." Called around for roof snow removal, and much to my disapproval, Everyone was booking out 30 days, could not wait for such delays. I called Lakewoods Remodeling, oh boy. I told them that I had a mega- crisis. That the roof was full of ices. The woman she called Steve, I was so relieved. The next day, 5 guys with shovels hit the roof and 1 1/2 hours later my roof was clear. These guys rock!!

Lakewoods was one of three firms that were highly rated in Angie's List from whom I requested a bid for a new roof. Bill was prompt in arriving to give me the estimate and clearly was well-informed. He provided the estimate quickly. I ended up with three very similar estimates and finally decided to select another firm, but feel that Lakewoods would have done a good job for me, too.

It went well, overall. I was impressed by the punctuality and professionalism. The price was very competitive and they spent time with me helping me select just the right shingles and other materials. There was a mixup on the day of the installation, though. They put on the wrong roof and no one noticed until the roof was almost done. So they called me that afternoon and said they would re-do completely. I told them not to rush, but they did it that day anyway. It seems to be fine, and I am happy with the roof, but I am sort of left with nagging feeling that they may have rushed just to get it done. I also would suggest that they have some quality control measure in place to ensure that the correct roof gets installed and have someone who knows what's goign on be on the job site before work gets started. The roof did pass city inspection, so that makes me feel better. But they said they would go out and check to make sure it was correctly done. I have yet to hear back from them on that.

The secretary told me that the estimates were supposed to be done earlier this week (Mon, Tues, or Wednesday). They haven’t come out yet. Steve, the man that was supposed to, said he misunderstood; he said maybe Thursday. I just called them this morning and asked what time Steve was going to come out to do estimates and I feel like the secretary was giving me the run-around. I asked her if I would be able to break this contract, and the secretary seemed to be fine with it. Steve told me yesterday that he'd come out only if it doesn't rain, and I don't feel like that's legit. I wanted to break the contract because they aren't doing what was agreed upon. They're not reputable.

Very responsive to estimate request and estimate changes that I requested. Did the work exactly as we described to him. Was in and out in 2 days. Their price was competitive with other bids I received. Crew was efficient and I can't find any flaw in the work at all.

Very unprofessional. I would not hire them again for any work. The crew was not properly prepared or equipped to do the tear off in a professional manner. Not enough tarps and the tarps were not laid out well. We have a tall house on a narrow city lot and they were not prepared to keep debris off neighboring property. I let them use plywood I had on hand to try and catch debris and keep in our yard. It was like no one explained to the crew what the job or site conditions would be. Debris from removal broke a neighbors basement window, which they did repair and replace. Cleanup after the tear off was pathetic. We had to call them back to clean off the neighbors roof, our porch roof, and yard. Even after that I picked up several more five gallon buckets of trash from the roof. The weather had been very rainy before they started our job so they had gotten behind on other jobs. The started on a Saturday and we weren't sure if they would be back the next day or not. No one communicated with us. The crew ignored specific instructions I gave them about how I wanted certain details handled. They missed building code specific items like kick out flashing on the addition. I specifically asked and the crew leader said he would take pictures of the ice and water barrier for the building inspector. Of course after the job was done, he had somehow forgotten to take any pictures. It was a god thing we had taken some and are on good terms with our local inspector. They only reason they are not rated F is because the roof did get done and has not leaked so far.
Description of Work: Tear off the roof on existing house. Roof existing house and new addition.

This past winter we had our first problems with ice dams and some minor leakage into a side attic where there is a valley. Since we had the roof replace less than 10 years ago I figured that the previous roofer hadn't put on ice and water shield properly. To prevent any more problems I decided to have the roof re-done on this 1/4 of the house (600 square ft) and use ice and water sheild over the whole area, not just 3' up the eaves/valley. I called Lakewoods on a Tuesday and scheduled them to look it over on the Friday. Bill Mossberg showed up right on time and did a thorough review of the job. I got an estimate within a couple days and was happy with the price and description of work. Over the next couple days, I talked to Bill about some changes (materials/adding a ridge vent/etc) and he was very accommodating. The work was done a few weeks later (they pretty much let me pick the week I wanted it done). Dumpster guy shows up at 7:30 to put that in place, materials show up about 7:45 to be dropped off, and Lakewoods crew show up at 8:00 ready to go. Everything went incredibly smooth. They made a special effort to not disturb landscaping and patio. About 9:00, Steve the project manager stops by to see how things are going and if I have any questions. The crew finished up around 2:00. Everything looked great - the shingle color matched up with the existing part of the roof, I saw how they put the Grace Ice and Water Shield down, etc, The site clean up was great. My Lakewoods experience was exceptional. They were very accommodating and professional. Bill Mossberg made a special effort to assume that I was happy with the job. Communications were great. I highly recommend this company.
Description of Work: Tear off 600 square feet of shingles down to roof decking then put down ice and water shield over entire area and re-roof. Included 3 vents, exhaust and 20 ft of ridge vent.
