encountered a more deceitful, manipulative and unprofessional contractor than
David Feldstein. DO NOT HIRE HIM UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.
We initially contacted Feldstein to install an egress window. He installed the
window and we were initially pleased with the work, so we got a quote for a
full basement finish. His bid was competitive, and he seemed knowledgeable, so
we hired him for the full project.
We had a wet basement and wanted to extend our interior drain tile to include
the basement areas to be finished. Feldstein advised that our existing drain
tile did not cover the full basement and recommended we install a full
perimeter drain tile. The drain tile work added $5,000 to the project. Once his
crew started breaking up the slab, however, they discovered that a full drain
tile system already existed, and appeared to be in good working condition.
Feldstein insisted on replacing the drain tile (even though he told us it
didn't exist) and refused to credit us the $5,000 for the unnecessary work. Moreover,
once the basement was finally finished (more on that in a minute), we had water
seeping into our newly-finished basement right where it leaked before. Obviously
the drain tile wasn't the problem, and Feldstein failed to diagnose and fix the
source of the leak. Feldstein has not returned my calls regarding the wet
basement.
Feldstein's framing sub Ivan was outstanding, and the framing went off without
a hitch. Once the dry walling started, things quickly went south. Feldstein's
first attempt at mudding, taping and sanding was a joke. The joints were a
mess, huge sections went completely un-sanded, and the areas that did get
sanded were full of waves and pockmarks. We pointed out the poor mud job right
away, but Feldstein's crew painted right over it. Of course the walls looked
terrible after painting. Feldstein told us it couldn't be fixed because it was
already painted! After we threatened to fire and sue him, he agreed to re-mud
and re-paint. Amazingly, he brought back the same sub that did the shoddy work
the first time, and the second attempt wasn't any better. It took a full 6
weeks of re-mudding and re-sanding before the sub had a passable finish on the
walls. At every step, Feldstein tried to gloss over the shoddy work and
convince us it couldn't be fixed. There was absolutely no supervision of subs
and no quality control. We only got a decent result because we pointed out the
obvious flaws and insisted that they be fixed.
Feldstein's painting sub was even worse than his mudding and taping guy. When
the paint guy did show up, he worked for an hour or two and then disappeared
again, sometimes for days. At one point, the entire project was on hold for a
week because Feldstein couldn't find his painting sub. The quality of the
painting was terrible; any do-it-yourself homeowner could do better. Every wall
was full of drips, runs, spatter marks and roller streaks. Again, we only got a
decent result after pointing out every drip mark and insisting that they be
fixed.
On top of the quality problems, the project took more than THREE TIMES longer
to complete than Feldstein promised. His initial estimate was six weeks,
start-to-finish. In the end, it took over three months complete, and we had to
adjust our Christmas travel plans because we were in the middle of our battles
with the painting and drywall subs. Feldstein even had the nerve to ask for
more than the contract price because the project was taking so long. Unbelievable.
In summary, this was the home renovation project from h***. Feldstein lied to
us every step of the way, paid no attention to quality, and had no control over
his subs. He should not be in the general contracting business.
