Jon is 19 and has worked as a technician for a few years at some computer repair store. Unfortunately, Jon exaggerates his competence. First, I doubt he really read my list. Second, he came with no tools (for hardware work?); I had to loan him my tools. Third, he could not assemble a CPU with motherboard (turned out there was an exotic incompatability that he could not resolve). Fourth, he could not get the router to work (this was a sophisticated task). Other hardware tasks took a lot longer than I would have expected. Jon is a nice guy and very self assured. However, in my opinion he should be charging $25 or so per hour. And he should come prepared to do the work, which you would expect of a $75 per hour guy.
Response from Innovative Computer Services
"The customer incorrectly assured me that he was a "Computer Geek" and pretty much just needed someone to assemble the parts. I incorrectly assumed then he had shopped carefully for his parts and looked to check compatibility with the motherboard. The motherboard as it turned out, did not support his particular CPU, generally something I would've double checked for the customer, but he assured me in the email before the appointment that he was a "Computer Geek". With the router, he wanted me to set up a "repeater" which is something that is very doable to do, but generally requires the same model of router to set up, as it's quite a complex and rather stupidly inoperable procedure. I told the customer that we may have problems with this in a disclaimer when I had spoken to him. His complaint was that I didn't make it clear enough that he should've just bought a new router. Which I agree, but it comes back to his claims of being a "Computer Geek". The "no tools" comment stems from me not having an exotically long screwdriver for replacing a battery in a power supply. I do have tools, and while my mobile set is occasionally lacking, I don't just show up to a place with absolutely no tools. He also fails to mention I stayed an extra hour on my own dime to resolve another issue that he had, as an apology of sorts for the fact that his own parts weren't compatible with each other. That being said: Lesson learned from this: I will never assume a customer knows exactly what they are doing, and will cross check anything with technology that they assure me that they have."
