We could not be more pleased with the outcome of our project. Eric explained everything in detail and made recommendations to make our screen porch even better than we had hoped. He took the time to research a brand of windows that we wanted, even though they were not the brand he usually recommended. He removed some concrete that had been surrounding our old deck because he felt it would look better, even though it added to his time on the project. He and his crew cleaned up every day before leaving, and he kept us up to date on the progress for the delivery of the windows. He kept the project moving on time and on budget. There were no surprises, just excellent craftsmanship. We are looking forward to enjoying our beautiful new screen porch for years to come. Thank you, Eric!

Updated pictures from our 11/20/2018 review on Eric's amazing work for our new deck and porch. We waited through the first winter to stain the interior, paint the exterior and decorate. Here is the final result! We couldn't be happier.

Eric did a fantastic job in all respects. We especially liked that he was in charge of all aspects of the project. He takes on one project at a time and works with one assistant. We had high expectations and he met all of them. We would have hired him several years ago but he books out typically a season advance.

Eric Mortenson did a phenomenal job building our new deck. He was very professional and easy to work with. He spent a great deal of time with us when we were looking at options to replace our existing deck with a new larger deck. The work was performed on time as stated and the quality of work was exceptional. He handled all the issues with our city regarding permits, calling to have all utility lines marked, etc. It gave us great peace of mind that all the details were handled. We would definitely have him do work for us again.

The only thing on our 'absolutely must have' list when looking for a house to purchase was a screened-in porch. As a Minnesota native, and one that always seems to get quadruple the mosquito bites as anyone around me, I knew a screened-in porch would be essential to my enjoying six months out of the year. Alas, the house my husband and I fell in love with didn't have one. We called several companies and had many out to give us quotes. Eric Mortenson stood out from the beginning. He didn't have a hard sales pitch and he didn't just say yes to many things we thought we wanted. He presented himself as an honest businessman, a kind person, and a master craftsman with a keen eye for aesthetics. We had several meetings over several months. He took great care and paid close attention to detail when putting our porch plan together. He went through many revisions to ensure a sound structure that incorporates clean lines and architectural elements which tie in well with the style of the house. In the end, he designed a beautiful multi-functional space that we will enjoy for decades to come. While construction was going on, Eric and his team were absolutely professional. Eric took care of our home as if it was his own, and we always felt safe with him working there. Unlike most companies which sub-contract out the build, Eric is there working everyday making sure each board is perfectly installed, each thing done just right. I can't say enough about his unmatched skill in construction and design, along with his outstanding character and kindness. I highly recommend his work and would encourage anyone to give him a call. He is the only one out there building decks/porches of this caliber. The quality and soundness of the structure even had all the city inspectors impressed. Eric does limited projects because he builds them all personally, so his calendar fills up fast. Run, don't walk!

From start to finish, Eric and Scott did an excellent job. Our deck looks awesome and we are very happy with the service provided. The city inspector was very impressed with the quality of work. I highly recommend Eric and Scott.

We had an old rotting second story deck off of our dining room that wanted to be replaced with a composite deck. We also wanted stairs off of the deck to go into our backyard but the space was rather tight with a shed that was in the area. I originally had researched decks two years prior and Eric was the highest rated on Angie's List (still is). So I reached out to him again, as well as other companies, and Eric was the most responsive and when he came over for the assessment was really the only one who truly listened and cared to understand what I was trying to do. In addition, he didn't have the added overhead built into the quote from others needing office assistants and sales staff as he and Scott are the two who do the entire job. His price was very competitive and I found him to be the most trustworthy of everyone that I met with. The tear down and build went seamlessly and it was fun to watch everything come together. Eric and Scott went above and beyond what I would expect and left us with an amazing deck that perfectly met what I was envisioning. There were a couple parts of the project that only Eric would take the extra time to do (vs the other companies) but he knew it would help with the overall aesthetics of the deck. He's a perfectionist and a good person. Expectations were exceeded and I couldn't be happier with the final product! It's only been a couple weeks and we've already had so many compliments on the deck! If you want to be satisfied with your investment, I would highly recommend Eric for your deck building needs!

Eric is an amazing deck installer. He was extremely willing to work with us and on our timeline. He listened to all of our ideas and concerns. Eric was able to problem solve and design a deck that met our needs and the final product exceeded our expectations. Eric does all the work and installation himself, meticulously paying attention to details. He will not be the cheapest person out there but he is a prime example of you get what you pay for. We can recommend Eric without hesitation and you will not be disappointed!

Eric and his crew are incredible - listened to our needs and made recommendations on design and key features - then proceeded to deliver a porch better than we ever imagined. Every day we were excited to come home and see the progress made, and were amazed how quickly and smoothly the plan was executed. Constantly anticipating how the other decisions we were making on the remodel would be orchestrated and was genuinely engaged to help us achieve the best possible outcome (landscaping, painting, concrete, etc). Our other suppliers even raved about how excellent his communications and follow up was - simply a joy for them to work with too. The city inspector said it is the best made porch he has seen in years. A true craftsman we would be thrilled to work with again.

WOW! Eric and Scott truly went above and beyond and created a beautiful deck for my family. We had many concerns which we voiced upon our initial meeting with Eric. Our previous deck (8 years old) needed to be removed due to excessive frost heave that had actually caused one of the beams to come completely unattached and fall down. We were extremely concerned about frost heave with using diamond piers, but Eric assured us, we would be good. As a protective measure, they did some additional work and insulation to ensure we wouldn't have any issues. Our deck was installed late summer, and this spring, when we checked, it hadn't budged at all! You can't go wrong with hiring Eric - they were always professional and punctual- they even came the day after a torrential rain storm, and worked in several inches of water! I'm a true believer that you get what you pay for, and in this case, we got a beautiful deck, with incredible craftsmanship that we know we will be able to enjoy and more importantly will last for many years to come.

Eric went above and beyond when he built our deck. He helped us choose the best materials and put a lot of thought into the right deck design for our house. He made sure to keep the railings and posts in thoughtful places so that our lower level windows were not blocked, and added an additional stair stringer to the stairs so that they are rock solid. He also did a lot of other little extra things that were not required to meet code that made the deck extra solid and beautiful! When the railing that we chose was out of stock citywide, he upgraded us to a better railing at no cost to us, just to be sure our deck was constructed on time. His estimate was also one of the lower bids that we got, and we looked at five companies! We couldn't be happier with our new deck and would absolutely recommend Eric's work to anyone.

Eric guided us through the whole process. His design was excellent and incorporated multiple features and ideas we would never have thought of. His years of experience were clearly evident. He also helped us with the approval process through the HOA. HIs estimates of time and cost were spot on. Throughout the construction process he kept us informed, minimized interruption of our daily lives and kept the work area spotless. He and his crew were always friendly and polite. At the end of the process he noticed a need to modify the landscape slightly and did this on his own and at no further cost to us. We could not be happier with the results and the deck has been widely admired by our neighbors.

Eric and his company did a wonderful job. He was very accommodating, and full of great ideas. If you want a cheap deck with no character Eric could probably build it, but he wouldn't be your guy. It is nice to see people who care so much about what they do. Everyone who has seen the deck so far loves it including us. If you demand perfection, give these guys a shot, you won't be unhappy. We started looking for a contractor to build our deck two years ago but didn’t feel comfortable with any company that we got a bid from at that time. That was until we made an appointment to get a bid this spring with Eric Mortensen Construction. Let me preface this review by letting you know that Eric specializes in the construction of decks and porches. He is truly an expert and has won several Angie’s List awards because he is the best and an exceptional craftsman. We made an appointment to discuss our upcoming project with Eric, who was very responsive and punctual (much appreciated and unlike some of our previous experiences). Eric listened carefully while we explained what we were envisioning for our deck and spent close to an hour providing us with ideas on how this could be accomplished. He had several suggestions that we had not even thought about that we ended up incorporating into our final plan. Eric had samples of decking materials to show us to help us choose colors, railings, lighting etc. By the time he left from the consult, we knew we had found our contractor. We received and accepted his very competitive bid almost immediately and were pleasantly surprised that he was able to fit our project in early enough in the summer to give us time to enjoy the finished product. Eric drew up the plans and got all of the permits needed from the city to begin on time. We were told that from start to finish, the project would be two weeks. Eric is very hands on and works on each of his projects with Scott. It was truly a pleasure to have both of them work on our deck. Both gentlemen are very personable and work ridiculously hard and with great precision. I have included some pictures of the finished deck. The inspector was very impressed with the craftsmanship that went into our deck. Trust me, there isn’t a more solidly built deck in our neighborhood. In fact, we also think that we have the most beautiful, most finished looking deck in our subdivision. If you are looking to have someone bid on your deck or porch project, you will thank your lucky stars that you had the sense to invite Eric to consult with you. We couldn’t recommend him enough!

We originally found Eric via a recommendation from a friend who he built a deck for; the recommendation my friend provided was spot on: "Exceptional craftsmanship; worth the premium price." From the start, Eric was very pleasant to work with, accommodating to our schedules and with timely communication, quotes and schedules for construction. While we were still in the design phase for our deck, he coordinated a visit for us at another recent customer to give us a feel for his work hands-on. Once work began, Eric and his assistant, wasted no time digging into the project and getting things rolling. He has a great personality, easily explains what's going on, when things should be done and is honestly fun to have around the house. He was working on our deck while our kids were home for the summer and there was never a moment where we felt concerned about his presence; our kids even made him lunch/snacks some days. The quality of workmanship can only be described as superb. My wife and I have a very strict attention to detail and are often frustrated by the quality of work supposed "high-end / premium" contractors offer. Eric has exceptional attention to detail and delivers fantastic work. We don't have any complaints from a construction, detail, joinery, stability, design, material or anything perspective. Everything is exactly as we hoped it would be. His pricing may seem above average, he actually *IS* the premium contractor you want working on your home and you get the quality of work you expect. Finally, we started this project to make our deck better. What Eric delivered was an extension of our home that we spend every night on just as a family or entertaining friends, or relaxing while reading a book. He made a comfortable space on the outside of the house that we appreciate as much as everything on the inside.

We cannot say enough good about Eric Mortenson and Scott, his apprentice. When we first met Eric to get an estimate we were immediately impressed with his knowledge, vision and patience. In this initial appointment, Eric helped us visualize a replacement deck that would fit our needs and be a much more functional deck than what we had. We hired Eric on the spot. After the first appointment, Eric came back to present roughed-out design options. After much discussion and alternatives, we picked his recommended approach and he then he went to develop detailed drawings and specs. The first thing that happened is that we had a furnace vent that was in a position which would require slight alterations to the design. Eric is very particular and didn't want to see the design compromised, so he paid for a plumber to move the internal venting so it would not affect the design we had agreed upon. The punctuality and communication regarding schedule and actual start was impeccable. Another glitch developed when the supplier of the material shorted the order by two pieces. Eric did not want that to affect the schedule or our impressions of work to date, so he personally drove to Kansas City and back to pick up the shorted pieces rather than have us wait for 3 or more weeks for supplier to deliver. Overall, the craftsmanship was excellent. Eric was onsite every day of the build; his apprentice, Scott, was there as well. They cleaned up every day and were done ahead of schedule. The last thing I want to say is that both Eric and Scott are wonderful people. They were a pleasure to talk with every day. I highly recommend Eric Mortenson Construction.

Great,... Eric spent over an 1.5 with me exploring the deck and the home. I described the porch concept my wife was proposing for the deck reconstruction, however, based on his review of my home and the deck comes out on grade, the utilities(gas and electric meters) and windows, and based on his years of laying out decks he felt a different layout would be appropriate using a concrete or paver product. He takes pride in his work and does not want to build anything that he would not be comfortable with at his own home. Others might bid on the project, however, he did not feel I would be satisfied. So he refused to go forward with a bid. This tells you something about this contractor, and thus I suspect if you do use him to build a deck you will be satisfied.

Very responsive and helpful with the design. Attention to detail was second to none, and the finished product was worth the higher cost.

Eric and his assistant Scott were great to work with. They showed up in a timely manner each day and worked very efficiently to get our deck built this fall. Eric was always on the job site each day. He took care of obtaining all of the permits and going through all of the red tape with our city. And he gave us great advice and recommendations on the design and layout of the deck, landing, and stairs. Our favorite touch is the LED lighting! Eric was great about planning ahead for the future - we plan to put a rain shield below the deck and pour a concrete patio in the future. He kept all of this in mind as he was designing the layout and where the stairs would end now to accommodate the height of the patio later. Eric and Scott always maintained a very clean job site and picked up each day. It never felt like we had a large construction project keeping us from enjoying our house and our yard. Overall, my wife and I couldn't be more pleased with the final product - high quality, beautiful, and built to last! And Eric could not be a nicer person. It was a pleasure to do business with someone who cares so much about the quality of his work.

Eric and Scott were fantastic. They were responsive to any questions or requests for changes. They built a better deck than I could have ever imagined. The whole process from start to finish was smooth and I did not have to worry about anything. Eric treated this deck like it was his own. I highly recommend him to anyone that wants a quality deck that will look aesthetically awesome and be functional for years to come.

Eric is booked several weeks in advance and he only builds decks in the Spring, Summer and Fall so, as others have stated, get in touch with him 2-3 months before you need your new deck. Eric and his assistant, Scott, do all of the work themselves keeping the quality and craftsmanship at the premier craftsman level. Eric states on his website that he does only high end decks and porches but he delivers value beyond expectations. When the design is locked and a $1,000 deposit is paid he has the design documents prepared, takes care of HOA approvals and pulls all permits. The progression is painless and he keeps you up to date on approvals and anticipated start time and estimated completion date. He started right on time and completed a couple of days early. His attention to detail, leveling, mitering corners, cutting in gutters and providing LED lighting for the deck posts complete with photoelectric timers. The process was the most painless construction project I have ever experienced and the results exceeded my expectations.
