D & J STEELE CONSTRUCTION INC

I chose this company because they were local. I initially emailed this company asking to send someone out to make an estimate on my kitchen remodeling project. I was looking to take down a wall and redesign the outlay of the kitchen. In addition I was looking to insulate and finish my attic. Don Jr. responded immediately to my email inquiry and seemed very enthusiastic about the job. He instructed me to call the office to set up a time for an estimator to come out. I called the next day during business hours (about 10:00 am) and no one answered the phone. I left my name and contact information and requested a call back. Three days later I had not heard from them. I called again. This time they answered, but the man I spoke to was short and curt. We set up a time for an estimator to come out and take a look at my project. On the day the inspector was to come I got called into a meeting for work. I was hoping the estimator would be able to come early so I could make this meeting. I called the D and J at 2:00 pm and again no answer. I left a message explaining my situation that I had a meeting at 4:30 (estimator was supposed to come at 4:00) and could they come a little early? I also said that if they could not come early I WOULD STILL BE THERE when they came at 4:00. They did not call back so I assumed I would see the estimator at 4:00. By 4:45 they still had not shown up, nor given me a courtesy call. I called their office and surprise, no one answered. So no estimator and I missed my meeting. I wrote Don an email explaining my dissatisfaction. He responded two days later apologizing and saying that his estimator got called away on an emergency for one of their St. Paul projects and didn't have time to call me. I guess I should have seen the two red flags at that point, one: why are they having emergencies on their projects? and two: if the estimator couldn't make it why didn't someone in the company have the professional courtesy to call me? But instead I decided to reschedule. We rescheduled for later that week. The time was for 10:00 in the morning. At 10:10 I was starting to get de ja vu but then the estimator called me and said he was running late. So I said fine. At 10:20 he called me to say he had the wrong address and could I give him directions? So after giving him directions he showed up. He was courteous and seemed to know what he was talking about. He had some good suggestions and we discussed several different ways to go about the project. I asked that he write up an estimate for the different types of work and options we discussed and he said no problem. That was three weeks ago. I have not heard back from D and J Steele Construction since. A week ago I sent them an email asking if they had any of the estimate done. I have not gotten a response. I called the office during business hours one more time and yep you guessed it, no one answered. I can only imagine that a company that is so unorganized and unprofessional during the stage where they are supposed to be showing you why they are the best choice would only be worse once you decided to hire them. I cannot vouch for the quality of work from D and J Steele Construction. However, based on my experience with them I never want to find out.

Needed ice dam repair, so I called this company. They called me back promptly and scheduled an apt. I was torn because I liked what Don Jr said over the phone - that he would do a thorough check of the damage and that he works with insurance companies. However, I have since chosen another company and canceled my apt with Don. I would give them another shot if something else came up. I liked his overall attitude on the phone.
