Absolutely horrible and unprofessional from start to finish! It started when I dropped off my mower and the person helping me did not know what he was doing. It took another person to come and they both had to figure out how to fill out the form. I was told by both that I would receive a phone call for an estimate and the work should be done by 4-5 days from when I dropped it off. 6 days went by and I did not hear anything so I called them I was told the work was done, sorry no one called but they had been busy, and was quoted a final price (after paying $40 down) which was in line with the remaining balance. I went to pick up the mower and was told a different price which was much higher. The man helping me said that someone had called "the customer" and got an ok to do the extra repair work. I told them no one had called me, stating the date they had written down for the call I was at work and I never spoke to any one nor did anyone leave any messages. I was informed the person who made the call was not in; I asked if they could call him and was told no. It was a Friday afternoon near closing (I had to leave work early to get there) and was told they would not let me take my mower until that person was back into work later that next week.i told them about the person I spoke to, when I spoke to him, and the quoted price from the day before and was told they did not know anything about that call. After much discussion, one of the men said he would discount the labor 20% and mark off something else such that I was paying about 1.5 times my previously quoted price (and about half of what I was told after the repair). The man actually told me that I was getting a good deal. I could not believe it; good deal for what doing work I never authorized?! Then when someone brought the mower out, it would not start. I asked if it had gas, which it did not, so he went to fill some gas into it. He proceeded to spill gas all over the top of the mower (and I was wondering if I did not say anything would he clean it up), start it and then go to put it in my car. I had to ask him to wipe up the gas, he looked "put out" and did a very poor job of wiping it. All in all it was a horrible very nonprofessional experience and will not be going back. I also kept receiving notices by email. To come pick up my mower for the next 5 days. In addition to my experience, while I was waiting, another cup stoner came into the shop, looked right at one of the employees and asked what he should do with his mower. The employee looked right at him and walked away such that the customer walked after him and stated what had just happened. The employee only said to go to the front (where the customer just was)and have someone there help him. Seriously! Poor service lol around.

They are great! We couldn't get the blade off and so they just said they can sharpen it with the blade on. They told us to bring it over and told us when they are open, and there was no wait time. They were able to just get it done, and we were on our way.

This will be my last experience with that horrible establishment. The front desk staff talks a big game about knowing their stuff when they are selling you a service, but when an entire month goes by waiting to hear back from the shop, and the total comes out to 3 TIMES what the front desk person quoted, I realized they effectively stole my $40 deposit. No way can they say that removing the 3 or 4 screws it took to remove the plastic cover from the snow blower and casting their gaze upon the external working parts for a whole month is worth $40.
When I confronted the front desk staff that had originally quoted me "under $200" for the listed repairs needed, they replied with "I'm not a mechanic" in one breath, then proceeded to make claims about their mechanical understanding of the problems with my machine and what I had originally brought it in for that were COMPLETELY wrong. Blatant salesmanship of the lowest lying form. I wouldn't take anything there if I were paid to.
This makes me sad because I always prefer to spend my money at the local small businesses, but this one is rotten. There are many other small engine shops in the area worth checking out. Stay away from this one unless you don't mind being robbed.

I am a do-it-yourselfer when possible but occasionally I run into something I cannot figure out. I was cleaning the carburetor on my snowblower and took it apart. Unfortunately I could not get it back together and thought I lost a tiny part. I called a few places which had long wait times or did not have the part I needed. Cedar was totally different. They said bring the carburetor in and since it was a very small job they could do it between bigger jobs as time permitted.
The people at the counter were very friendly and didn't laugh at me for not being able to fix it. The man helping me said he could look at it and get the part so it would not have to go back to the repair shop. When he brought the part in I asked if he could put it together and he said no problem. Within 15 minutes he had it fixed and I was out the door for the price of the part.
Perhaps I got lucky that the showroom wasn't full of customers but I know I would go back there ever time I have a small engine that doesn't work. Their friendliness and customer service was perfect. I wish all businesses could be like them.

I've been using Cedar Small Engine since I purchased my home in 2004. The people there are consistently personable, knowledgeable and professional. As someone who works in the service industry, I take note wherever I go of how businesses treat customers - those in line in front of me, my own experience and those being served after me. I won't often return my business to places that either don't value their customers or that don't seem to care. Cedar Small Engine is a business that understands that treating customers well is good business. During my most recent visit, I offered to pay to have a jammed trimmer line removed and replaced. Instead, the person who helped me recognized me as a regular customer and charged me only the cost of the new trimmer line, when he could've also easily charged me for 15 - 20 min of labor.

I feel secure with their work but the price seemed high for repair and tune-up.  We played phone tag trying to work out when the machine was completed.  It all worked out in the end.

We dropped our lawn mower off on Saturday, May 10th, and we received an email on Wednesday, May 14th indicating it was ready, ahead of schedule (we were promised it by May 17th).
When we dropped off our mower, Derek took the time to explain fully the service that would be performed.  He also had a lengthy conversation with us about how to take care of it during the season and how to handle it before for storing it for the winter.  Most importantly, he inquired of the type of gas we had been using it and recommended non-oxygenated gas.  He explained to us why this type of gas should be used, how to store it (on wood; not a cement floor) and after asking where we lived, told us the closest service station to get the gas at.  He also offered to dispose of any old gas we had at the house.  When we picked up the mower today, Derek emptied our gas can (as promised), again explained the service provided on our mower, disposed of the old parts (they were provided for us to look at and we had no reason to bring them home), and then loaded the mower into our vehicle.
We spent a little over $120 for the full tune up and parts.  I'm sure you could get a tune up, at least the labor part, a little cheaper, but I'm certain you wouldn't get the customer service, knowledge, and expertise from a guy like Derek.  We will be bringing our snow blower in this fall for a tune up, and look forward to Derek teaching us how to take care of it as well.  Many thanks to Cedar Small Engine!

Issue: Mower tuneup
Complaint: time mower kept, poor communication
I brought my lawn mower in for a tuneup in November 2013. They explained due to heavy snowblower repair season they would repair it when the season slowed down and I'd be amongst the first lawnmowers attended to and would get it back in probably Feb 2014. I was very unhappy that they would not repair it on a first come first serve basis but accepted this.
I did not hear from them in February so called. It was not repaired yet. I explained again that I'd like it back and was not happy with them keeping it. They said it would be done as soon as things slowed down.
I didn't hear anything so I called in March. They said it was not done yet, they will call when it is ready. Again I said I was unhappy with not being called to update me, it not being complete by February and them keeping it so long.
I called again in April. They said they could not find the mower. When I called back they said they found my mower they think but it is behind all the other machine and they couldn't access it. They were not sure if it was repaired and I'd have to wait until other people picked up their machinery. I left a message for the owner Jim, he did not return my call. I called three times over a week and a half, left a message and never received a call back. When I called a third time, they said he was unavailable and they'd have him call me back. I said I'd wait on the line.
When I spoke to the owner I was understandably upset but logical with my approach. He said my mower was repaired and had been repaired last November 2013. It was behind other machinery and he could not access it because it would take "hours of manpower." I asked when I could have it delivered he said he wouldn't "play the minute game with me." It would be mid may. I said that would be unacceptable and recounted what I had been told. He said he wasn't responsible for other people's communication with me. I asked if he could "make it right" with me. He said he could not give any financial compensation or discount. He said he would not discuss me getting the mower until I calmed down. He was insisting that I call him back another time. I said I wanted to resolve it once and for all as I'd been calling since last November. He was condescending and patronizing. He said he wouldn't call and leave me a message when it could be delivered and he wouldn't talk with me further that day.
I hung up extremely upset, not having a clear understanding of when I'd get my lawnmower back and his unwillingness to give me a date, call me back to leave me a message about the date or compensate me financially for the inconvenience.
In final, the next day I received a call from his manager saying the mower was found, it had been fixed in November 2013 and as the other employee had told me it would be delivered the few blocks to my home, he would honor that.  They attempted to deliver the wrong one before getting the right one here.
I was charged the full amount just under $100 dollars.
Very poor business practice and communication.

The people at Cedar Small Engine and Repair were great.  My 10 year old mower wasn't running right.  It had never been serviced.  I brought it in and they totally took care of it.  Just picked it up and it is running great.  They also gave me tips on how to better care for my mower and the best gas to use.

Found this place on Angies list and went there even though it was little far from my house because they had such good reviews.
I dropped my 10 year old lawn boy mower off.  I noticed that the engine was running rough towards the end of last season so I wanted to make sure that I could make it through this season without any issues.   The folks at cedar small engine explained my
options and asked for a $40.00 deposit to take a look at it.  They called me in a day after giving the mower a quick look over with an accurate estimate. (They applied the $40.00 deposit towards the total cost of the repair). The mechanic working on it called me and took the time to go over everything with me in detail. He made me feel that repairing the motor was the correct
decision.   They had the mower completed in before the promised time. When I went to pick it up they gave me some tips on how to store it next winter.  The people who work here are the best! They explained to me that the mower repairs would be guaranteed for the season, they even gave me a couple of bags with the old parts they replaced.
Summary: $40.00 deposit applied to repair, accurate estimate, repair completed early,  friendly staff, I would highly recommend you go here for your small engine repairs.

This was an issue related to a recall that had supposedly been fixed by another shop.  Cedar called got it covered by the warranty and fixed it without cost (I had them change the oil thus, the charge).  The largest knock on this place is the time it takes to get your item back.  In my experience, it takes a long time for ALL small engine repair shops to perform their work.  I think it is the nature of the business.  They estimated 3 weeks and it took 3 weeks.
It runs great.  The were super nice and I will go back if necessary.

We have it tuned up by them every year.  The first year we took it there, it needed a carberator rebuild.  Since then, following their advice for mower care  has enabled us to avoid that.  They clearly explain what they are going to do and why.  They are friendly and helpful.

It went very well. The price and the time to cpmplete the reapir were acceptable. I had first tried a general tire repair shop and they were less than enthusiastice about such a small tire and small expense item.
