When I confronted the front desk staff that had originally quoted me "under $200" for the listed repairs needed, they replied with "I'm not a mechanic" in one breath, then proceeded to make claims about their mechanical understanding of the problems with my machine and what I had originally brought it in for that were COMPLETELY wrong. Blatant salesmanship of the lowest lying form. I wouldn't take anything there if I were paid to.
This makes me sad because I always prefer to spend my money at the local small businesses, but this one is rotten. There are many other small engine shops in the area worth checking out. Stay away from this one unless you don't mind being robbed.
The people at the counter were very friendly and didn't laugh at me for not being able to fix it. The man helping me said he could look at it and get the part so it would not have to go back to the repair shop. When he brought the part in I asked if he could put it together and he said no problem. Within 15 minutes he had it fixed and I was out the door for the price of the part.
Perhaps I got lucky that the showroom wasn't full of customers but I know I would go back there ever time I have a small engine that doesn't work. Their friendliness and customer service was perfect. I wish all businesses could be like them.
When we dropped off our mower, Derek took the time to explain fully the service that would be performed. He also had a lengthy conversation with us about how to take care of it during the season and how to handle it before for storing it for the winter. Most importantly, he inquired of the type of gas we had been using it and recommended non-oxygenated gas. He explained to us why this type of gas should be used, how to store it (on wood; not a cement floor) and after asking where we lived, told us the closest service station to get the gas at. He also offered to dispose of any old gas we had at the house. When we picked up the mower today, Derek emptied our gas can (as promised), again explained the service provided on our mower, disposed of the old parts (they were provided for us to look at and we had no reason to bring them home), and then loaded the mower into our vehicle.
We spent a little over $120 for the full tune up and parts. I'm sure you could get a tune up, at least the labor part, a little cheaper, but I'm certain you wouldn't get the customer service, knowledge, and expertise from a guy like Derek. We will be bringing our snow blower in this fall for a tune up, and look forward to Derek teaching us how to take care of it as well. Many thanks to Cedar Small Engine!
Complaint: time mower kept, poor communication
I brought my lawn mower in for a tuneup in November 2013. They explained due to heavy snowblower repair season they would repair it when the season slowed down and I'd be amongst the first lawnmowers attended to and would get it back in probably Feb 2014. I was very unhappy that they would not repair it on a first come first serve basis but accepted this.
I did not hear from them in February so called. It was not repaired yet. I explained again that I'd like it back and was not happy with them keeping it. They said it would be done as soon as things slowed down.
I didn't hear anything so I called in March. They said it was not done yet, they will call when it is ready. Again I said I was unhappy with not being called to update me, it not being complete by February and them keeping it so long.
I called again in April. They said they could not find the mower. When I called back they said they found my mower they think but it is behind all the other machine and they couldn't access it. They were not sure if it was repaired and I'd have to wait until other people picked up their machinery. I left a message for the owner Jim, he did not return my call. I called three times over a week and a half, left a message and never received a call back. When I called a third time, they said he was unavailable and they'd have him call me back. I said I'd wait on the line.
When I spoke to the owner I was understandably upset but logical with my approach. He said my mower was repaired and had been repaired last November 2013. It was behind other machinery and he could not access it because it would take "hours of manpower." I asked when I could have it delivered he said he wouldn't "play the minute game with me." It would be mid may. I said that would be unacceptable and recounted what I had been told. He said he wasn't responsible for other people's communication with me. I asked if he could "make it right" with me. He said he could not give any financial compensation or discount. He said he would not discuss me getting the mower until I calmed down. He was insisting that I call him back another time. I said I wanted to resolve it once and for all as I'd been calling since last November. He was condescending and patronizing. He said he wouldn't call and leave me a message when it could be delivered and he wouldn't talk with me further that day.
I hung up extremely upset, not having a clear understanding of when I'd get my lawnmower back and his unwillingness to give me a date, call me back to leave me a message about the date or compensate me financially for the inconvenience.
In final, the next day I received a call from his manager saying the mower was found, it had been fixed in November 2013 and as the other employee had told me it would be delivered the few blocks to my home, he would honor that. They attempted to deliver the wrong one before getting the right one here.
I was charged the full amount just under $100 dollars.
Very poor business practice and communication.
"Cedar Small Engine will not respond to these false allegations. Our company is considering taking legal action for this customer posting false statements and defamations against Cedar Small Engine on the internet. Unless these are removed immediately. Cedar Small Engine has been in business since 1982, over 30 years and isproviding good customer service with many repeat and satisfied customers."
I dropped my 10 year old lawn boy mower off. I noticed that the engine was running rough towards the end of last season so I wanted to make sure that I could make it through this season without any issues. The folks at cedar small engine explained my
options and asked for a $40.00 deposit to take a look at it. They called me in a day after giving the mower a quick look over with an accurate estimate. (They applied the $40.00 deposit towards the total cost of the repair). The mechanic working on it called me and took the time to go over everything with me in detail. He made me feel that repairing the motor was the correct
decision. They had the mower completed in before the promised time. When I went to pick it up they gave me some tips on how to store it next winter. The people who work here are the best! They explained to me that the mower repairs would be guaranteed for the season, they even gave me a couple of bags with the old parts they replaced.
Summary: $40.00 deposit applied to repair, accurate estimate, repair completed early, friendly staff, I would highly recommend you go here for your small engine repairs.
It runs great. The were super nice and I will go back if necessary.
