I was introduced to Tony Castle Flooring through Lumber Liquidators. Tony Castle Flooring is one of Lumber Liquidators companies that do their flooring installs. Tony Castle Flooring was hired to take carpet up and reinstall vinyl planking in basement; take carpet up and install pre-finished hardwood on upper sleeping level, and hired to take carpet out, install new oak hardwood and refinish and also stain and refinish existing hardwood on main level.
This company states that they have many years of experience in the flooring install business and provides expert workmanship. WRONG! I would never recommend or have Tony Castle Flooring and/or any of his subs anywhere near my home again and I want to warn others that this contractor in my opinion should not be in the hardwood install or finishing business. This company should be known for very inferior work quality, inferior workmanship, inferior customer service, overcharge of materials, not finishing work and charging for it, and they caused damage to my home.
Tony Castle Flooring used a sub-contractor named Dustin L Petersen from Select Flooring, Big Lake MN. This sub-contractor used a young boy Justin to help him with the work. They left my floors with huge gaps at the sides of the flooring. In some spots, the baseboard and shoe molding did not even cover the gaps. When the contractor took baseboards off, he ripped the sheet-rock on walls. Every task that this sub-contractor attempted in my home caused more issues for me to fix: damage to walls, floors, damage to pipes, water damage to ceiling and walls, stain product that he got on my new appliances that ruined the doors.
They were sloppy and careless and left the worksite with garbage, dirt, materials, and nails. They didn?t finish the work that they were hired to do and then charged me for it. They even left my toilet unhooked in the mudroom on the main level for two weeks. My husband had to finish a lot of the work or fix items not done right or we had to hire others to fix the major damage.
Tony Castle flooring as general contractor, took no responsibility for his subs. He was not present on the job site when his subs worked. The only time we saw Tony Castle was when he wanted to get paid. When I did show him an issue (when he came to get paid), he said that was the subcontractors issue. Then the subcontractor would say that it was Castles? responsibility. I do not know how this contractor can stay in business. If anyone is giving him an ?A? rating it is my opinion that they are paid or they are family, because there is no way that his contractor is qualified to be in the flooring or refinishing business.
While in the middle of all this chaos at my home, I started researching Tony Castle Flooring Inc. (found other names for this same contractor: known as Tony Castle Flooring, Castle Flooring, and also known as T & D Flooring ? Jon Dennis and Tony Castle as owners) because I couldn?t believe that with this level of inferior workmanship and quality, poor communication, poor service, and lack of responsibility that others were not complaining too. I did find complaints for Tony Castle Flooring Inc. on the MN Better Business Bureau site, then on Angie?s List where I found write-ups from people who had similar experiences. Unfortunately it was too late for me the reviews were written after I started the work with this contractor. Also found civil/criminal records on MNcourt site.
On the last day Tony Castle came to the house (6 months after the start of the project and again only showed up to be paid) he handed me a final bill and expected to be paid on the spot. I told Castle that I wanted to review the charges with my husband. He heckled me and threatened to take me to small claims court. I told him to get the h*** out of my house.
After reviewing all the invoices and work we found that Castle had charged us for work not applicable to the job, work he didn?t finish, over charges on taxes and overcharge of cost of material. I paid Castle what I felt he was owed based on work satisfactorily completed and I deducted for any damage and or work that my husband and I now had to fix because of his subcontractors carelessness. The amount was substantially less than he thought he should receive. This payment discrepancy went to small claims court (conciliation court). The judgment was to split the final bill amount, and the judge stated offset was given to us as homeowners because of the contractor?s inferior workmanship, quality of work, and because we still have to fix damage. I had to pay more money to this contractor but only because I had to. Castle did not deserve a penny more than I originally gave to him. Beware!

It went horribly! They installed hardwood floors, throughout our first floor. It took them a very long time. They sub contracted the work to somebody else, so it wasn't done in a timely fashion. They did not mix the boards in properly so we had to go back and find very special packages of hardwood so we could match the remaining sections, because they didn't properly mix all the boxes together and they did a sloppy job. It has been a year now. It cost about eight thousand dollars.
their "Meet our Staff: section on site. The floor had uneven spots, partially due to a piece of subfloor that had to be replaced. Installer installed the wrong thickness of board which created more problems. At no time this this person ever use floor leveling compound, which is an industry standard practice, even after I mentioned this to installer. Now I have a wavy
floor. Boards that squeak due to poor installation after having already been removed reinstalled. The trim work was sliced in and amateurish. They ran out of boards and never finished. Teenagers that helped with installation that were overheard
speaking of how crappy the house and job was. These people didn?t finish one of the closet trim jobs and lied that the trim was not available to install even though trim was sitting in closet. Our stainless steel fridge was damaged. The transition piece from the dining room tot eh living room had 2 pieces instead of one piece as I was told they ran out but that?s not the bad part, one of the
pieces wasn?t even the same wood or color. They also didn?t match the trim work to the floor as I requested. I contend that this company intentionally submits low bids and then tries to get more money after stating that their estimator is incompetent and underestimated the job. I contend that the ratings on this site for this company are not from actual
customers. It is impossible for a company to be so horrible and have zero
standards and be rated an A. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY.
We bought the wood from Lumber Liquidators and let it sit in the house to acclimate to the humidity and temperature. It sounded logical. He was afraid if he just came out and installed it it would warp or crack because it had been in a cold warehouse.
Tony Castle came out and measured for the job. He emailed a quote along with a materials list for what we should order.
I ordered the wood and associated items from Lumber Liquidators, and I contacted Tony to schedule the work once the product arrived. We were able to schedule installation for the week following the receipt of the wood.
On the first day of the installation, Amos Blomquist, who owns Kamo Hardwood Floors, showed up at our house. I was surprised because Castle did not disclose that the work would be outsourced to another company.
That having been said, Amos did a wonderful job. He was very meticulous with the board selection, mixing the boxes, and the cuts. He worked on the project by himself for four days and had his partner work wih him to finish the job on the fifth day. I would highly recommend him for any wood installation project.
I have not been contacted by Castle to ask how the installation went, and I don't believe he ever visited the site to check the progress of the work.
We had 5 boxes of wood left over which we returned to Lumber Liquidators for a refund (less a 20% restocking fee).
We would use this Company again for Hardwoord floor installation.
