necessitated the relocation of the existing electric meter as well as the
wiring of the new room. The electrician I wanted to use was unavailable, so my
contractor recommended American
Electric. John Lewis owns and heads this company. He came out for the
pre-construction walk-through and struck me as the poster child for a ?CAN?T DO?
attitude. What I consistently experienced with John was that he would make appointments
with people ? the contractor, the project manager, other sub-contractors, the
homeowner - and then fail to keep them. He was never on time for a meeting even
if he set the date and time for it. American Electric routinely failed to
return phone calls to the project manager and to me. The contractor alone would
be able to get a phone call returned, but only after making multiple request
calls himself.
When American Electric?s staff made their first work visit to
prepare the various receptacle locations and run the wire bundles from the new
meter box to the fuse box in the basement below, the work was done but there
was no clean-up done on site. When I went down in the basement to check on what
had been done at the fuse box, I found cut wires and cables and wrapping debris
everywhere on the floor and nearby furniture. Two days later, I also discovered
there was a 2-1/2? hole left open in the
outside wall where they pulled out the old wire bundle from the old meterbox after
I went looking for how mice had gotten into the basement. I complained to the
contractor and put tape over the hole myself to temporarily seal off the entry.
The communication problem with American Electric and John
Lewis has caused multiple delays on my project and angered other
sub-contractors who came out as scheduled only to find they could not do their
work because the electrician hadn?t done his required work first. My contractor
had to hound John Lewis to come back and remove the old meterbox so the
carpenter could begin work on the wall to which it was affixed. When John
arrived unannounced to remove the old meterbox which was now in the interior of
the new room and under a roof, it was a rainy day. He parked his car in my
driveway right up next to the garage, blocking the homeowner?s entry. When I arrived
home, I couldn?t get into my garage, so had to park my vehicle out in the
street and walk in the pouring rain with my toddler grandchild in tow. I told
John then that I preferred the contractors to park in the street. His response
was ?well, I don?t want to get wet.?
Moving the utilities box also required the movement of the
cable and phone lines which American Electric staff did. Almost immediately afterwards,
we began to experience intermittent
phone problems ? we could place outgoing calls, but often could not get
incoming calls. The phone company determined (a billed service call) that the
electrician had improperly wrapped the interior phone lines upon themselves
which caused the interference problem and remedied the problem.
The actual electrical wiring work was done satisfactorily by the American Electric staff - the outlets and lights work.
That said, my overall experience with American Electric and specifically John Lewis was very poor. I saw no evidence of interest on his part in satisfying a customer ? customers just seemed to be a necessary nuisance. I called the office with a question about the new fuse box they installed. I am still waiting months later for that call back. That seems to be the American Electric MO.
I would never use him again nor would I ever recommend him. The experience was just too much of a headache.
Great guys and they got done fast and on budget
