After taking on the daunting task of finding a company to replace the siding on our one-story rambler, we received a recommendation for SMA Exteriors. While the end result of this project is beautiful, we give full credit to the siders themselves, and none to SMA.
Throughout the process, the siders, who subcontract with SMA, were wonderful. They asked a lot of questions, paid attention to details and assured us we?d be pleased in the end. We are. Their dedication to the job, and clear pride in their work, created the beautiful home we?d hoped for. The SMA employees and management were very different.
We made the mistake of not writing every, tiny detail into our contract. When the SMA sales representative stood in our driveway and told us SMA always replaces gable vents, and that ours would be replaced to match what currently existed, we believed him. Later, it was the siders who double-checked that we wanted the gable vents removed and holes covered. No, of
course we didn?t. When we inquired about this with the sales representative, he told us SMA typically painted the existing vents. As an option, he said we could purchase rectangular vents (not the custom he originally promised) at $93.51 each. After I pointed out that we were the ones coming up short, and paying $187.02 was not something we were willing to do, SMA agreed to cover the charge.
When the vents were replaced, they were simply nailed to the house. They did not cut an opening to accommodate the new shape. We only figured this out when we noticed the vents weren?t lying flat against the house and we went into the attic to understand why. Disappointing.
By far, our biggest frustration came with another promise that fell flat. Our house was built in 1954, so we expected it had lead paint. The sales representative assured us it had lead paint, and that they?d complete a full lead-paint remediation ? a cost of $831.50. This, however, was never done. The house was never tested for lead paint and no additional precautions were taken to assure paint chips/dust from the siding removal wouldn?t get into the air. When we asked for a reimbursement of the remediation charge, we were shocked at how it was handled.
We wrote Steve Arrell, SMA Exeriors president, an email talking about how pleased we were with the job, as well as some concerns we had with miscommunication along the way. We thought the patient experience issues would be things he?d like to address. This is when we asked for the reimbursement of $831.50. Steve never responded to our concerns via email,
instead he wanted to talk over the phone. During that call he called us ?complainers? and was overall unprofessional. He then said he would offer us a ?discount? on the project if we signed a resolution form.
We never asked for a discount. We simply asked for a reimbursement for services not rendered. The resolution form stated:
Customer agrees:
1) To withhold from submitting any reviews on public outlets or social media sites that could negatively impact the
reputation of SMA Exteriors @ Restoration Inc. & its representatives
2) That they are satisfied with the finished product and services
We can?t help but wonder how many others were silenced because of their need for reimbursement. We have two small boys, so while our reimbursement is of great importance to us, we also don?t condone the practice of silencing clients in this way. It?s wrong.
We?re still unclear why Steve didn?t find it appropriate to repay us for work he didn?t do, especially when that easy decision would have left us happy, recommending SMA Exteriors to others. Instead, he put the fault on us and tried to silence us in order to get reimbursed - surprising and unprofessional.
Needless to say, we won?t work with SMA exteriors again and discourage others from doing so as well. Finding a company to complete such a job is stressful as it is. There?s no need for extra hassle and poor customer service.
"Thank you so much again for your business! We appreciate you. If you have time, please post your positive review on our website at www.SMA2DAY.com. Let us know when we can assist you again."
For our roof installation, a crew showed up that could tell me very few details of the installation, as they did not speak much English. I do not speak much Spanish, so it was difficult. At no time, throughout the day, as I came out to check on the progress of the work, which wasn't as often as I liked, due to the rain that day, no one could tell me much about how the work was going. We were replacing a very old roof, that had leaked the Winter before, and my husband had patched, and I knew there was damage up there. Being that this is my parents home, I know the history of the house and its work, and this was certainly a job that needed the thorough updating of materials we thought we were purchasing. We would have gladly paid for any new boards that needed replacing, as long as the integrity of our roof was returned. At no time throughout the work, did anyone from the company come to oversee the work being done, or explain the work completion to me. The pictures they handed me do not tell me anything significant about the work done.
Although nothing in their contract states that they install an ice and water barrier, they must be required to, as an inspector from the city has to come by to check that they did. If they cannot see it at the time of installation, they must have complete pictures of all areas where the ice and water barrier were installed. I looked this up online, and ice barrier is to go wherever leaks can happen. Hmmmm.
Now that it is Winter, my roof is leaking everywhere, places it did leak and many new places. I have drip buckets, plastic garbage bags attached to windows to funnel water to pans, light fixtures I can't use because water is coming out of them. Guess where no pictures were taken of repairs or ice and water barrier? The damaged part of the roof. From the pictures, none of the flashing is newly replaced, so there is the chance that ancient flashing and nails holes that are thirty years old are leaking water into my walls. I have paint bubbling, the whole thing. And with so much snow, no one can even get up there now. It won't even be addressed until Spring, after all the damage has been done.
"This is the first we have been notified of any dissatisfaction with roofing installation or leak claims. Since the roof install October last year I have communicated 3 times with (member name removed) in regards to closing out the project and inspecting the gutters which has been scheduled for this Spring. There has been no mention of leaks with the roof. If you feel that you have a warranty claim on the roof the correct process is to contact our office directly to initiate it - if we were unresponsive to the warranty claim I could understand a negative review on Angies list. We have not made it 20 years in this industry by installing defective roofs and will always stand behind our warranty 100%. If the roof has any leaks from rain (water running down slope) the repairs and damages would be covered under warranty. However, If the leaks are result form ice buildup it is not warrantable. Many homeowners are experiencing ice dam leaks this winter - ice build up is not an indicator of a defective roof install but rather a result of warm air escaping into the attic. Please contact our office if you would like to make any warranty claims - thank you. Steve Arrell - General Mngr."
Matt, the hired construction worker came when he said and did amazing work and was pretty quick for being only 1 worker. He forgot his wallet that day, but my wife bought him Subway since I didn't want him to go hungry. He came back the next day to put the finishing touches on the window after he went to another job to install another window. New Exteriors forgot the Door handle for the patio door but would bring it out on Monday since I didn't want to shell out $400-500 more dollars just for some mudding work on some new sheetrock Matt put up to cover the (6) 2x4's that filled in for our bigger patio door we had. I did the work and someone called as was suppose to come out Monday because I told him I would be finished by that day, it was Wednesday when I called Steve to see why no one came. Matt called me that afternoon (not Steve) to say he would be showing up the next day to finish putting the new oak trim on and install the patio door handle. Oh I believe either Monday or Tuesday we seen our patio door handle sitting on our front steps so I don't know what is up with that.
Over all I had an OK experience with New Exteriors by SMA but a great experience with Matt the installer, I would recommend Matt to anyone. I know I said I would use this provider again, but I would have to think twice. I just wish construction workers would finish the jobs they start before starting others, and that's the only gripe I got really. There season is short so they pack many of jobs in and customers suffer because of it I think.
I would like to thank them though because I finally got new windows and can open them instead of leaving them closed with plastic over them so bugs don't crawl through the rotted wood.
Steve Arrell offers fair quotes: he's courteous, upfront, honest and very knowledgeable. He explained the differences in roofing materials, windows, gutters with leaf guard protectors and vinyl siding options. He addressed my concerns and answered all my questions. I was comfortable working with him and felt very confident in choosing their company. They were fantastic from the beginning to the end. They're accessible and provide excellent customer service.
The deck, driveway and surrounding areas were protected with tarps before starting the job. The crew was very nice, skilled, fast, hardworking and professional. Their craftsmanship is "Top Notch". They also did an excellent job cleaning up. I've had many complements on the new exterior of my home from my friends, family and neighbors. As a matter of fact, some of my neighbors are so impressed with their quality of work that they too hired them to repair their homes as well.
My house looks beautiful! I'm extremely satisfied and would definatly use them again. It was a pleasure working with them. I highly recommend New Exteriors by SMA to anyone looking for any type of home exterior work that needs to be done.
We LOVE our new windows and door. They are easy to slide open and closed and VERY easy to pop in and out for cleaning (I can even do it myself with out my husband's help). What completely amazed us is how soundproof they are when they are closed -- the only sad thing is we don't wake up to enjoy thunderstorms anymore if the windows are closed because you just can't hear it!!
We would highly recommend New Exteriors to anyone looking for new windows that are a great quality at a very competitive price.
