My Dell Desktop using Windows XP Home suddenly would only boot up into the famous "Blue Screen of Death". I tried everything I could by myself including running in safe mode without success. I then took it to the Geek Squad at the Maple Grove Best Buy on 12/20/2008. After a review by a technician, they said that I had a bad motherboard because they could see "bulging capacitors" on the board. I took the machine back and discussed this with Dell. Dell suggested swapping the memory chip locations, but this did not work (But, as it turns out, Dell was on the right track). I then ordered a replacement motherboard from Dell for a cost of $228.75 which included shipping. I installed the motherboard and got the SAME BAD RESULT. At this point, I called Tech Toads to have them take all the data off the hard drive so I could re-format the drive since all the hardware was good (thinking that Windows or some software was corrupted). Tech Toads came to my house and picked up the desktop (Nice service, but my house was close to their office). However, after they had time to look at it, they found that the problem was REALLY A BAD MEMORY CARD ALL ALONG. So, they replaced it with a larger one, cleaned up the software, and returned the machine to my house without having to re-format the hard drive (see my review of Tech Toads). Now, the desktop works just fine, I have twice the memory, and unfortunately, a spare motherboard. Obviously, the Geek Squad failed miserably to find a common computer hardware problem.

THE GENTLEMAN WAS VERY HELPFUL. I KNEW WHAT I WANTED FROM CONSUMER REPORTS. HE SHARED SOME MORE SPECIFICS TO THE PRODUCT I WAS INTERESTED IN BUYING. HOWEVER, HE WAS UNAWARE OF A REBATE ON THE PRODUCT. HE NEEDS TO 'BONE UP' ON HIS REBATE ITEMS. CHECK THE WEBSITE FOR SPECIAL REBATES THAT MIGHT NOT BE AVAILABLE IN THE STORE.
