This was obviously a small job compared to the actual drilling of a well, but I would not hesitate to recommend these folks and plan to use them again should we have additional well issues in the future.
Cost includes approximately 1.5-2 hr service call and replacement part. I have nothing to compare this cost to, but based on response time; professionalism, quality of work and explanation of the repair I felt the charges were fair.
Workers were very friendly. However some of the work was not very professional.
- Project Manager explained that they need to use a "precision" boring machine to run the line under the house
since our house had a double wall
- When it came time to drill the "precision" hole, instead of using a mason bit with a hammer drill or something similar, they went to smashing a 2 foot by 1 foot hole in my basement floor with a sledge hammer and inadvertently destroyed part of the in-floor HVAC duct. I asked if they would repair that or at least help me repair it and they said "we don't do that"
- When they dug the hole in the front yard, they cut the power lines going to the well pump (not uncommon). However, instead of installing new conduit and repairing the line right then and there, they said, they needed to come back to finish the job. However, we didn't hear from them for 3 days (but they already sent us the bill!!), so I had to call to get them to come back out and by that time the ground was frozen so the repairmen had to make a makeshift conduit which looks horrible and unprofessional. Fortunately, we have a fake rock to cover the well pump and it was large enough to cover the "modified" conduit.
- The project manager did give us a discount on the overall bill, but it seemed that he put that on the bill to offset 2 extra hours of back hoe service.
2) The sale rep (manager) came on time. Explained to me the work needed to be done. And I received the estimation two days later as promised.
3) After interviewed five contractors (companies), I have decided to to with Mantyla Well Drilling, even though the price that they quoted was not the lowest. The reasons that I picked this company were:
a) Inputs from customers' Angies; sList review comments.
b) Fair and reasonable price estimation and "what if..." condition listed on the contract.
c) Honest conversation and straight forward answers.
d) Friendly and efficient personnel when I called in for questions and the quick responses of their follow up actions/answers.
4) On the day to start the job (abandonment of the well), two tech members from the company came on time. They were polite, friendly, patience and worked tirelessly. They knew their stuff and very professional. At the middle of the job, an un-expected
issued came up due to some unknown factors of the aged well, I was a little bit concerned; but they were calm and finally
figured out how to fix the issues in no time. The abandonment was successfully completed as expected (amazingly closed
to the hours that they have estimated). They cleaned up everything without leaving a single mess in my place before leaving. Both my husband and I were very please. They indicated that they would return in one week to refill the cement in the well after the first
filling was settled.
5) The two same members returned in one week to refill the cement into the well. Job was kinda considered done, even though the cement that was put in to fill the well will take weeks (may be months) to settle down to a subtle level. I called them, the company
indicated whenever I think there is issue, they will return for the fix. So far so good. I am satisfied with their job. Highly recommend this company,
Called Mantyla Well Drilling and he was able to come out right away on his way back from another job. Couldn't believe how fast he was able to come out.
Quickly identified our issue as low pressure in the system and also a faulty pressure switch. He spent almost 2 hours doing service and replacing the switch and educating me about use of a well pump. He was friendly and worked quickly, and did not mind at all the questions I asked.
He was extremely knowledgeable. Turns out he had installed the well pump originally and so was also able to give us some additional advice and a heads-up on upcoming maintenance we should do.
Overall a wonderful experience! I would certainly hire again for any future work!
Final cost: $660. Yes, this was less then their bid!
