"Thank you Mr. [Member Name Removed], we appreciate your business and your review. We strive on quality and customer satisfaction, glad we could meet your expectations!"
"The place the Mr. [Member Name Removed] wanted it was in the road right-of-way, which is illegal for us to put a berm in or on a City street at the homeowners request. Mr. [Member Name Removed] did not pay for any of his asphalt work that we completed, the berm portion was a couple hundred dollars, and he had another driveway repair in his driveway which was completed to his satisfaction, though he did not pay us anything on the entire project. Thus, Hennepin County Conciliation Court heard the case and awarded DMJ full payment for our services as we were contracted and installed per our contractual agreement which was in 2014."
"Thank you Mr. [Member Name Removed], we greatly appreciate your business!"
"Unfortunately, a very disgruntled person and past customer from 6 years ago, that has felt the need in 2016 to post negative and derogatory statements all over social media. We tried to help this customer with his issues, however, he was unwilling to meet or cooperate to accomplish any solution to a repair job that was done over 6 years ago and was not a warrantied project as it was a small repair. However, even though it wasn't warrantied, we were willing to help Mr. [Member Name Removed], though he was a customer that no matter what we tried, we could not appease him. As in business, you cannot always please everyone, but we sure try!"
Hi potential DMJ Asphalt customers. Before deciding whether or not to go with DMJ for your asphalt needs I would recommend you move on to the next asphalt company. Below is an exchange I had with the owner of DMJ. They performed work on my apron in 2011 recently a hole appeared in the apron that fixed. I called to see if they would fix this under warranty or if we could come to a compromise to fix the hole. They searched every work in the contract to find a way out, which they did. However, I challenged them on the contract stating that they did not use the material stated in the contract because they put a few large pieces of cinder block in the class 5 base. Common knowledge would say trying to compact class 5 with large cinder blocks has the potential to fail over time, which on my apron it did. Apparently the owner disagrees and decided it was best to responded to me with personal attacks. Very sad that the face of DMJ decided it was best to personally attack me instead of having a professional conversation to resolve the problem. I would have been fine if we had a phone conversation where the end result would of not been in my favor, but at least we had a discussion. Obviously Kari Johnson, the owner, felt that was not an option, but the option respond in an immature manner. You decide do you want to go with a company that does not stand behind their product/service and have an owner, who is the face of the company, act like immature person. And if you have an issue after the service is performed do you trust DMJ Asphalt to come out and fix it? In my experience the answer is NO. I am sure they will respond, but read the below and you decide.
Hi Angie,
I meant to reply last week, but I wasn't able to get to this until today.
I reviewed the two documents you sent and saw the "No Warranties" mentioned among the other disclaimers. I would say that there should be a warranty ONLY IF DMJ would of done the job per the customer agreement which t I paid DMJ to do. I took it upon myself to fix the hole in my drive where the apron that was fixed by DMJ. When I cut out the asphalt I was shocked to find loose pieces of concrete that DMJ used as a base to the apron. Upon reading my agreement it states Class 5 recycle base would be installed as a base at a minimum depth of 6". No where in the agreement does it state DMJ will also use broken apart pieces of concrete block mixed in with class 5 to create a base. These pieces were directly underneath the asphalt NOT under the class 5, which caused the asphalt to fail over time. This explains why the repair failed not some rodent and the other reasons I was given.
From that perspective DMJ did not live up to the agreement I signed. Therefore, DMJ was/is liable to repair that piece of my driveway in order to meet the agreement I signed and DMJ signed. I had to repair this myself because of the fear of someone getting hurt by tripping over/into the hole or damage to my car. Without fixing this I would of never known that the base failed because of not properly building the base before laying the asphalt on top. I have included pictures of the concrete pieces that I pulled out of the hole. I now wonder what other parts of my apron has a similar base and will other parts start to fail??
Now that we know what the real issue is and the fact that this does not meet the customer agreement how will DMJ address?
Thanks,
Mike Olin
Mike,
Good afternoon, I?ve received your emails and reviewed your contract. The work DMJ Asphalt completed meets or exceeds industry standards.
Your job was a 2011 repair project without a warranty, however, still completed to Minnesota Department of Transportation Specifications. Your base work consisted of class 5 recycled gravel base that meets state specifications. Class 5 recycled base is made from recycled asphalt and concrete, thus you may find concrete in your base work or it could be from the overflow of secrete from capping the blocks. Furthermore, you can clearly see from the pictures that you are experiencing other areas/gaps between the brick and concrete which is outside our work area, and experiencing similar issues. Natural earth movement, phenomenon?s , as well as rodents, can cause underlying issues and what you are experiencing is not caused by our installation. We do stand behind all of our work and have been doing it for three generations, with the majority of our work referrals and repeat customers. You, without meeting with us as indicated in our email, decided to repair this miniscule area yourself. Then email us with a bogus, rudely worded claim that a not only a person but a car could incur damage!! I?m not sure how you maneuver around planet earth on a daily basis, as there are many other areas that we pass over/on as the general public that could be much more dangerous than this.
I am sorry that you feel the need to disparage DMJ Asphalt, and feel free to do whatever you deem necessary, as remember via social media works both ways. We work with all of our customers in a professional courteous manner, however, in your case, I?m not sure you can comprehend professionalism or politeness.
Thank You~
Kari Johnson

"This is posted on here twice, first these grades then again with all "F's", please see our company response on the above one as this is a duplicate, however with a better review, than the second one above, though still not accurate."
"Thank you Ms. [Member Name Removed] for your review, we greatly appreciate your business and customer referrals, as your neighbor!"
"Thank you!"
"Thank you Mr [Member Name Removed] for your review, we appreciate your business. In reference to the "D" grade for punctuality, unfortunately, asphalt installations are effected by the weather and mother nature which is beyond our control. As we strive to give you a top quality installation it sometimes takes longer that you or DMJ wants, but our bottom line is our work meets or exceeds industry standards."
"Unfortunately, customer did not follow installation and back filling guidelines per their contract or care packet. We met with and informed customer of what needed to be done with their landscaping (nothing to do with the asphalt installation) and they chose not to follow instructions or directions to protect their investment as advised."
. The first winter the driveway heaved and I called DMJ and they said to wait to see it comes down in the summer which it did almost
. My old driveway did not heave like this so I am concerned the base may not be good enough in spots. DMJ says it's normal for driveways to heave but it was about 1 inch to 2 inches above the sidewalk and the garage floor in the winter and pulls away.leaving a space.which is also unattractive
"Our scheduling process/system is explained in detail and included in the customers care packet which is received the day they contract with DMJ. It clearly states the process and how we contact/notify the customers and or keep them updated via email on their status. The depth of the base has nothing to do with the heaving you are experiencing, this is the "freeze/thaw cycle" we have here in the State of Minnesota, controlled by Mother Nature, not anything to do with the driveway. This is also explained in detail in your care packet and warranty. Thank you for your business, and I am sorry to hear you would not hire us again, as you received a top quality driveway and installation."
"Thank you for your business Ms. [Member Name Removed], and we are glad you are satisfied!"
"Our work installation unfortunately is all controlled by mother nature, thus delays. If there was damage done by DMJ, we would fix it no problem, so it would be our obligation to repair. As accidents sometimes do happen, we are all human. Bottom line finished and final product is quality what we strive for and you gave us an A. Thank you!"
"All f our customers are called and notified the day before installation. We do not leave messages, and only schedule the project if we personally speak to the customer and get their ok to schedule. So, obviously, there was a mishap on the customer end about not getting the car moved as required. We apologize for this, however, notification was provided and the customer did not follow the instructions needed. We appreciate your business thank you for your review, though not exactly correct."
"Thank you very much, and thank you for taking the time to post a review! Appreciated!!!"
"Mr. [Member Name Removed], we are glad we could be of service to you, and we greatly appreciate your business!"
"Thank you Ms. [Member Name Removed], we appreciate your review and business!"
There was a slight delay in the repair start time due to unforeseen circumstances, but the driveway replacement began within the contractual timeline and was completed very promptly. I was very happy with the results - the work had been completed to the letter of the contract and the new asphalt driveway looked great. My neighbors complimented the new driveway and I have had no cracking or other issues with the driveway in the two months since completion.
I would recommend DMJ asphalt for a new driveway or replacement work and would contact them again in the future for any additional driveway repairs or replacement needed.
"Thank you Mr. [Member Name Removed], we were glad we could assist you in the completion of your asphalt project!"
The driveway looks great and would recommend DMJ to anyone.
"Thank you [member name removed], we appreciate your business and we are glad you are happy with our work."
