The craftsmanship of Pat and his helper was excellent. And Pat was extremely helpful. He came over on very short notice on a Friday to scope out the project and prepare a quote. We were fortunate that he had a break in another project so he could fit us right in. He started work the following Monday, left the scratch coat to cure/dry on Tuesday, and finished all the stone on Wednesday.
We were trying to decide exactly what we wanted for a mantel when the project started. Pat had some suggestions, and when we had narrowed it down to a 6x6 rustic barn beam, he made a special trip over to our house to show pictures of some options for corbels (mantel supports) to my wife on Tuesday. I had just gone out to buy the pieces of stone for the corbels at noon Tuesday, and when Pat heard that, he sketched out the details of how I could mount them on some iron straps Tuesday night, in time for the epoxy to cure before he mounted them on the fireplace Wednesday.
The stone corbels weren't part of the original quote, and since we were so late deciding what we wanted to do, it could have really delayed the project. If we had planned things out further in advance, Pat could have mounted the straps, too. But I thought it was great that he was willing to explain in detail how I could prep the corbels to be ready for him to install them, so the project could still finish on time. We were kind of under the gun, since the carpet layers were coming on Friday.
