because of the weather. We finally started work the first full week of December. The weather was very bad and delays in
work are understood. They are restricted when weather was below zero and high winds. They will be back in April to finish
painting and plugging all the nail holes in the siding. They also will be sanding and painting around door frames. This will take
a couple of days when warmer weather arrives. They will also clean the yard because of all the snow some scraps were covered.
The employees were very courteous. We are very happy with the colors and the change in the appearance of the house.
The team that did the work included siding pros Ed and Matt, and painters Brent and Eric. They were terrific ? prompt, courteous, smart, hard workers, and aiming to please.
They worked steadily in 90-degree heat, but good humor and good hydration (with a little lemonade on the side ? no pun intended) kept the project going even ahead of schedule. And it looks really good!
They also identified a couple of related issues and made suggestions that enhanced the total project. It would not have been necessary for them to inquire about, then suggest removing an old room air-conditioning unit that we hardly use, or to install a kick-plate to an exterior service door we had recently replaced, but they fixed both areas, something that will save us future hassles and money.
We?re pleased with the fresh, sharp appearance of our house and the durability of the product that was installed. All in all, we?re confident that going with TCSP will serve us as a good investment.
We had the original work done a number of years ago and are now in discussion with TCS to complete a similar project for the front of our house.
This has to be one of the most professional companies I have every worked with and I was a Senior Project Manager for a Fortune 100 company for 32 years. They did exactly everything they said they said, were at our house every day at 7 AM and cleaned up everyday before leaving. The project foreman and the crew were very pleasant and professional. I wish I could find this kind of profession service in other home related companies.
At first, things went well as the siding was removed and the house was rewrapped. As the summer passed and the work progressed that situation degraded. Terry had indicated he had a professional crew of full-time workers with some part-timers doing some of the easier tasks. Generally, that was true but the workers were not well supervised, and mistakes were made by both the full and the part timers. John, who seemed to be the foreman of the project made mistakes ordering the windows, which resulted in a stoppage of work pending the exchange of windows. The workers moved to another project, which seemed reasonable, but they did not immediately return when the window exchange was made. A subcontractor, who was working on the roof and installing the windows, insisted on bringing his son, who was 10 or 12 years old, with him. It became a problem when he let his son work without supervision. The son worked without a drop cloth and got putty on the carpet. Both the sub and his son felt free to enter the house without knocking and to roam the house at will. There was a time when I caught the son handling personal items on the top of a dresser in a bedroom he had no business being in. This caused a dispute between the sub and me, which ended with the sub leaving the project.
When work resumed on the siding, the crew was not totally the same as the original one. Two or three of the crew were now quite unprofessional and seemed to feel that their work should not be criticized. That would have been fine with me if they had performed it well; but they did not. I noticed that some of the workers would make inaccurate cuts so that the siding panels did not fit together properly and then justify it by pointing out that it would be covered by other panels so it would not show. I told them that I expected work to be done properly whether or not it was visible at completion. After that, they began doing things, including minor vandalism, out of spite. They would lay the panels with the painted side up (I had chosen to have the siding factory painted because there is better quality control in a factory) when they were cutting them. Silica dust from the panels would then settle on the painted side reducing the glossy appearance of the siding. I told John that I did not find that acceptable, especially since the problem would go away if they cut with the painted side down. When the workers continued their improper cutting technique, I told them directly and I told Terry that the silica dust could not be removed and the panels would require repainting. Terry agreed to repaint the ruined sections of panel, and he did personally repaint much of the affected siding, including that which was visible.
Delays for various reasons stretched the project from the estimated weeks to three months. It was, all in all, a very unpleasant experience that I hope never to repeat; however, Terry did all he reasonably could to keep the commitments of the contract. By job end most of the bad work had been redone and the house looks quite nice. It seems to be quite solid and much less drafty than it had prior to the work.
Terry told me recently that the workers who had caused the problems were no longer employed at Twin City Siding Professionals. I have no reason to doubt his word. As a result, I am having a difficult time assigning a grade for the overall experience. For me personally, it was a terrible experience. On the other hand, I don't know how much of the fault should lie with Terry and his company. It appears that some information that I had given to the project manager, John, had not been passed along to Terry. I suspect, and would certainly hope, that current clients would not be subjected to a similar experience. At the end of the project, my respect for Terry as a businessman and as an honest man were undiminished.
"I really appreciate that the customer’s respect for my honesty and business acumen remains undiminished.Thank you, Customer. You know it means a lot to me. I teach all of my employees that our primary responsibility is to bring happiness to our customers. We do that by specifying the right products, performing the work in a professional manner, and standing behind our work. The vast majority of our customers require higher than average quality – that is why they hire us. I was excited to work for Customer, because we had extensive conversations about his background, and I really respected the arc of his career. Clearly, we failed him in a few ways. I had no idea that the roofing subcontractor brought his son to work with him and entered Customer’s house. This was and is clearly unacceptable. We parted company with that gentleman (and, I guess his son, years ago). James Hardie had some major problems with the silica dust coating in their ColorPlus product (especially the darker colors) years ago. Those problems have been largely mitigated by them, and we have implemented changes as well. Placing the panels upside down when cutting them, runs a very high risk of scratching the coating, which results in unfinished substrate being exposed. Even though these micro-scratches could remain unseen, it could compromise the product performance years down the road. John did make a mistake on the window/door order, and we had to leave for five weeks because the new fenestrations needed to be installed before the siding could be installed. Our payroll records indicate that we scheduled another job so that our employees could keep working. We felt compelled to finish that job before returning to Ken’s project. I was completely unaware of the bad attitudes my employees exhibited toward the customer after they returned. That doesn’t sound like somebody who would work for me, but I have absolutely no reason to doubt the customer in this, or any other matter. Clearly, behavior like that is unacceptable. Regardless, the people who worked on Customer’s project have not worked for me since 2008. I would like to end by thanking the Customer. The thing I remember the most about that project was customer telling me how inefficient we were as a company. I really took that to heart and every year since, we have increased our efficiencies. In fact, I called Ken and left him a message on this matter two years after we had completed the project. We also now use a third party company (Guild Quality) to survey all of our homeowners. I sincerely hope that this is the only time I will find out one of my customers is unhappy over five years after the project."
TCSP had re-sided several homes in our neighborhood, including the homes on BOTH sides of our house and another one across the street. So for a couple of years, we were able to view their workmanship and the James Hardie siding product on a daily basis. My husband and I really did like the clean look of the JH hardiplanks. We decided on the James Hardie siding vs. top of the line vinyl even though it was going to be more expensive but knew that in the long run, it would outlast the vinyl and look better.
Terry Stamman, owner, came to our house and spent over an hour discussing our needs and educating us on the James Hardie products. Terry said he would come back with various options and cost. We met with Terry again and he had 3 options ranging from good, better, best and the corresponding total cost of each. We had a budget and didn?t want to really go past that so we told Terry the things we really needed and what we could forego (ie. cultured stone 1/3 up the garage stalls, not replacing all the soffits, etc). He did suggest that all our soffits and most of the fascia were in good condition and just needed to be painted vs. being replaced so we could stay within our budget.
John Lilja at TCSP was awesome because he, along with Terry?s initial idea, designed our existing unattractive solid wood column with a more decorative fluted column made from James Hardie trim and Fypon products. This was a lot less than the PVC Fypon fluted column that we initially wanted. I also worked with John in designing my front entry door with Fypon fluted columns and a crown header as well as dentil mouldings around the top of the partially covered entryway. I had John revised the CAD drawing several times until I was happy with the size of the crown header on the door. My husband agreed that the final column designed by TCSP looked so much better than the more expensive PVC pre-fabricated column!
Terry suggested replacing our plain soffit on our 2 story partially covered entryway with a pine beadboard for curb appeal. We also had TCSP design 3 curved headers over our garage doors to take away the contemporary look of the house. Terry suggested placing a trim piece on the curved header to polish it off. That turned out really nice!
Nate, job supervisor, came and took the final measurements and we went over exactly what products were going where as well as the final colors. We opted for the JH Colorplus hardieplanks in khaki brown and hardietrim in sailcloth because it didn?t require any painting since the colors were already baked into the siding.
Andy Hieb and his crew at TCSP installed the siding, garage door header, and the beadboard soffit. All of them were extremely nice to deal with. Andy was very approachable and was always smiling! They came at 7 am and left by 5 pm and always cleaned up before they left each day. Those guys really did work very hard without taking many breaks. There were 3 days it rained and they couldn?t work on the house. But, they were still able to finish the job in the 2 weeks estimate they gave us.
There was a separate carpenter from TCSP, Curt, who came and constructed our front entry fluted pillar/column and the decorative mouldings and crown header around our door. My husband and I were very impressed at the finished product! Our house (especially the front) turned out better than I had anticipated. We had the JH shingles (shakes) just on the front exterior (the rest had the 7 inch hardieplanks) as well as Boulder Creek stone around our large front window. Love the sailcloth color trim with the Khaki Brown color siding.
After the siding, boulder creek stone, and decorative mouldings were installed, the gutter guy (can't remember his name) came to installed the gutters which already had the James Hardie sailcloth trim color pre-painted at the factory! He said they order the gutters pre-painted with the exact James Hardie trim colors! I was impressed how the gutters just blended in with the rest of the trim on the house.
Brent and his crew came and painted all the soffits, fascia, filled in all the nail holes on the column and all other decorative mouldings and then painted a 2nd coat on. They took over a day just to prep with plastic, taping, etc. to ensure that no paint would get on our windows, new siding, etc. I was impressed they took so much care in prepping just to paint the soffits, fascia, front entry and garage mouldings!
We have had numerous neighbors complimenting on the new exterior. Another neighbor said we have the prettiest house in the neighborhood now! Friends and family that have stopped by to visit have also complimented how beautiful the house looks. Thanks TCSP for making that all happen!
We had a meeting before the job to go over with the project manager exactly what we wanted and to explain in detail the process of the putting up the vapor barrier and siding, etc. We knew every step of the way what to expect and when to expect it. Communication between ourselves and TCSP was excellent. The workers were great. A different Sam was running the job and kept in frequent contact about what they were doing and confirming our wishes. They always kept the work site clean and removed everything in the end. It took them about a week. We love how our house looks. It's like it's brand new.
There is a little painting work that hasn't been completed due to all the weather issues, but it should get done soon.
I decided to hire Twin Cities Siding Professionals based on their reputation, customer list, and the detailed presentation. Terry explained very clearly what our options were and patiently answered every question. He knew ours wouldn't be the biggest job, but he treated us as if it were. We had four meetings before we started the project, and we were crystal clear on the scope of the work.
The crew members were friendly, efficient, experienced, and respectful. They arrived promptly every morning and quietly went about their work. Sure, there was noise from the hammers and compressors, but the atmosphere was always professional. I was so impressed by the workers. They greeted us with a smile and hello every day and were never bothered by questions or our coming and going. They were also careful to pick up all the debris, and best of all, completed the job on time.
I also had Twin Cities Siding Professionals do some painting for me, and Brent did a spectacular job. He meticulously prepped the deck and fascia and was conscientious to the last detail.
Terry promised we would be thrilled with the job, and we are!
Tom, our salesman, came to our home - was informative, straight forward, confident in the James Hardie Product and stood behind the workmanship of Twin Cities Siding Professionals. Because he did not pressure us into a decision, we were able to do the research needed and in the end the right choice was made. Not only does our House look drastically different but its noticeably heating better without the cold drafts. The Cost of the project was an investment we'll never regret.
"Our Project Consultant met with the member on August 17, 2011 and emailed the proposal to her from his personal email on September 2, 2011. She had indicated this was a Spring of 2012 project and he was planning on following up in March. As soon as we received this report, we researched the situation and sent her the proposal again just to be safe. Upon our research, we discovered that the Project Consultant had typed the email address incorrectly the first time he sent the proposal. When it did not bounce back to him, he assumed that she had received it. As a result, we have made a change in our company's systems to make sure this situation never happens again. Any proposals that are emailed, and precious few are, must be emailed from our company account as opposed to a Project Consultant's personal account. This way we can be certain that all of our potential customers receive the same world class service that you can read about in our other reports here on Angie's List."
