Auto Body Work
After the collision (the car was still driveable) my husband took the car in for an estimate on a Thursday and arranged to drop off the car the following Monday with a tentative pickup for the Friday of that week, or perhaps the following Monday if Hume's required more time. We live an hour away from Duluth, so it took some schedule rearranging for me to pick him up from work that Monday, but since they were to have the car for only one week, and I generally walk to work, we didn't think we needed a rental car. When my husband drove by Humes on Thursday of that week the car hadn't moved from where he had parked it. When he stopped in, they said they had just gotten the replacement door that day, and that they had misunderstood and thought that he had wanted to drop off the car right away, and that they hadn't committed to a Friday pickup date. They were very apologetic, and while frustrated, my husband and I understood that miscommunication happens. I had rearranged my work schedule for the second time that week when the pickup was cancelled. On the following Monday my husband left a message asking how the car was coming it was not returned. He left a second message on Wednesday, which was returned on Thursday and plans to pickup the car at 12 noon were made. I rearranged my schedule for a 3rd time so that I could take my husband to work. At about 9 am, Humes called to say they needed more time because when the car was driven out into the sun the color of one of the panels was wrong and need to be blended - could we pick up the car later in the day? My schedule was rearranged for a 4th time. When we went to pick up the car, I was inspecting the repair while my husband went inside to get the keys and pay our deductible. I found numerous unrepaired dents and dings, the replaced back door had chipped paint on the inside edge of the door, the plastic on the interior of the doors was scratched, and chewed up like someone had used a screw driver to pry the pieces off (the interior was not affected by the collision), some of the plastic pieces were not firmly attached as they had been when the car was dropped off. It is now difficult to roll down the window, which it was not after the accident, the front window has a couple of deep scratches in the glass, the tinted window film on the back window is scratch and gouged and the vinyl stickers that advertise our business were destroyed, which again was not affected by the accident - and someone had tried to cover up the damage using some kind of tape. When we showed the problems to the two of the staff one of them tried to say the interior had been like that when the car came in - which if you inspect the panels not touched by Humes is clearly untrue and there is is nothing comparable on any of the other plastic. When the chipped paint on the inside of the door was pointed out, the staff admitted using a salvaged door - even though they had quoted for a new one. When we pointed out the poorly "repaired" vinyl stickers on the window the staff member said that she told my husband that they might not be able to save them - I responded that whether or not that was true, I was p***** that they had tried to cover up the damage and not admit that it had happened. The woman I was talking to told me not to swear at her continued to say that it wasn't her fault that she didn't know the vinyl was damaged. I told her that I didn't consider p***** a swear word, but that I was sorry that I had offended her and again tried to explain that I wasn't angry because the vinyl was wrecked, but that they had tried to cover it up. The woman stormed off and refused to talk to me. When my husband went in to pay the bill it was $796.94 more than the estimate - even with salvaged parts when the quote was for new parts. Plus they had the car for 12 days instead of the originally discussed 5. So, now we have to have our car repaired for repairs done by Humes. Sure wish we had gone with the company down the hill.
