I drew up our own design and got the permits needed and talked to Don in our home in early summer whether he would be interested in doing the job. He seemed to be interested, but did not make any estimate or bid. I sent plans and instructions over the summer months and hoped he would be able to the job before the end of October. We ordered and purchased all the construction materials and had them on sight at that time. He got really delayed on another job where a lot of extra work had to be done. Before he started on ours I asked him to give us some kind of idea of what the cost might be and he finally gave me a number, and we went ahead with the job. (We knew Don before since we lived in the same area in the country). Because some changes were required by the Building Office, it did end up requiring additional work. adding to the cost. I had some trouble getting him to respond to messages over the summer and fall, but once he started the job he put on (3) very skilled carpenters and they had it framed up in (7) or (8) days. Don is on site on his jobs to make sure it gets done right, but this causes time passing before he gets to the next job. He is very knowledgeable and skilled, and very conscientious in doing a good job. He was the first contractor I have ever had which took great effort to build it according to my plans. I was on site also to be available for questions. I am probably more knowledgeable about construction than the average homeowner, which causes me to be more critical of how a job is done. Don's prices are high, but competitive with other builders of his caliber. If you are not too tight on your budget and can be flexible in waiting for the job to be done, he will do an excellent job for you. They worked hard all day and cleaned up their worksite before they left. We stopped the job with the framing and wanted to wait until next spring to decide if we wanted him to complete the decking, railing, and trim.

D Mitchell Constr. has performed work on three separate occasions, doing rehab work on both our previous home (100 yrs old) and our current home (30 yrs old). Not knowing the extent of work needed, we had him perform the work on a time and materials basis, rather than a confirmed bid quote. In both cases, he was very informative as to the conditions that he encountered and the options and costs that were entailed prior to proceeding with the work.

His work is excellent and his attention to detail valuable. If you want a project done right, we would highly recommend him. He will also be doing remodeling of our kitchen in the near future.
