"We are very sorry that this client was disappointed. We work very hard to deliver the highest quality work on-time and on-budget. Remodeling is interactive and requires team work between the client and the contractor. In order to minimize delays, it is important to have material selections and the design complete prior to construction. When we first met in August of 2014, we were told that all of the materials had been purchased and/or would be provided prior to project start and a plan was provided to us. Once project work started, it was clear that the materials were either not selected or incomplete or were changed during the course of the project. This created delays and confusion. We worked hard to accommodate our clients wishes; even agreeing to stop the project for several months so they could evaluate other flooring finish options. While we are far from perfect, we were very committed to this project and meeting our clients needs. One example was a willingness to meet on multiple occasions during the evening or on weekends to accommodate our clients work schedules. We also met on New Years Eve at their request so that both clients could be present. As we explained, the plumbing waste line exists in a wall built during the original construction of the home (not by us) and the noise was caused by the expansion of the pipe from hot water, causing the pipe to rub on the framing between the first and second floor. Our licensed plumber confirmed the cause of the problem and we offered to fix this but the offer was declined. Access panels (required either by code or for convenience) are built in different ways but one of the most common is to use a simple cold air return vent cover. This is an inexpensive option and once installed, impossible to differentiate from a real air vent unless it is removed. No alternative method was requested or we would have been happy to provide and install it. As a result of this experience, we implemented several changes to our process. First, we have selection sheets and work with our clients to make sure all selections are detailed and complete prior to starting the project. We also confirm that the selections are available and in-stock. This reduces miscommunication and delays. Second, our project manager provides frequent updates which describe what was completed that day and what is scheduled for the next. In addition, if any hidden conditions were uncovered we explain them in detail and provide recommended solutions. We regret that we were unable to meet all of this clients expectations. With the changes we have made to our system and increased discussion about the expectations for the project and process prior to start, we are confident that future results will be very positive! We would love the opportunity to provide you with a free estimate for your project."
The master bedroom project included; remove bedroom door and replace with a pocket door, remove sliding closet doors and replace with bi-fold wood doors (required new framing), remove and replace master bath door and frame, add new electrical wiring for a ceiling light and install a fixture I purchased, fix carpet in closet where closet door track needed to removed. The agreement was that I would do all the staining and finishing of all unfinished wood and do all painting of the new sheetrock and areas of repair due to pocket door installation. They proposed that they would purchase all materials and deliver them for me to finish. When I was ready I would contact them for demo and installation. Stonehearth?s labor and materials cost totaled $4,740.
The materials were delivered to my home on July 22nd. I notified Stonehearth on 8/19 that all finishing was completed however I was going to vacation on Sept 2nd for 2 weeks so if could not be completed (didn?t expect it) project start date would have to be when I returned on Sept. 16th. They stated no problem and to contact them when I returned. I contacted them when back and they requested 50% payment before demo could start I sent the check on Sept. 24th.
Project work began on Oct 7th and was completed on Nov. 6th. After work was done I was concerned about how the pocket door finished. Stonehearth came to remove the door for me, I refinished it, and they returned to re-reinstall.
I was very happy with the outcome of the project however the project was not without concerns.
- The total work hours in my home was about 40hours (5 days). This includes hours for each worker when 2 where here at same time. It took a month to get the work done which I did not expect. It ended that a worker(s) were here about once a week. Most of the time I was not alerted to when they would be here until the day before. It meant I had to reschedule plans and keep my schedule open for the month. The owner/project manager told me that my project was small and they were fitting me in when workers were available. However he said they should do better at keeping me informed.
- Missed delivering all of the materials that needed to be finished. I noticed and called for delivery (which they did next
day) and I had to rush to finish.
- One contractor did not show and I was not contacted, I called to report. They came the next day.
- Electrician scheduled but was not able to do the work when he reported as he said he was not informed of the details of the work needed and he did not have enough time.
Despite these issues I was happy with the quality of the work and the outcome. All of the contractor?s quality of work was excellent. They were all very respectful and pleasant to have in my home. The cleanup was excellent. I would hire again.

The following are some of the instances of incompetence shown by this firm.
1. They took incorrect measurements of the existing shower stall because they brought over-sized shower stall to install.
2. They installed a smaller shower stall and try to justify that the space left over is due to loose floor tiles.
3. We have to spend more money for a different tile for replacement as the existing floor tile is not available.
4. When finished, some parts of the shower stall were missing, the shower wall had an uneven surface, the shower leaked and still leaks, and the caulk around the base peeled off.
"We feel badly about the situation and will happily continue to try to remedy it. During our first visit, we discovered that the customer had two similar previously installed fiberglass neo-angle shower kits that have leaked (not installed by our company). Because of the previous problems with leaking, we strongly encouraged the client consider having a tile shower base and walls installed, which was declined. We explained that the new neo-angle shower kit was unlikely to match the existing footprint perfectly, due to changes in manufacturing and design over the previous ten years. The difference in size would necessitate tile repairs. The existing walls in the bathroom are uneven. We explained that the thin fiberglass panels in the shower kit flex and follow the contour of the framing behind it, which likely contributed to the previous two leaks. After completing the install, we ran the shower, testing for leaks and everything performed fine. We will be contacting this client to see if we can resolve this issue. For our future clients, we do require a deposit to purchase initial materials needed for your project and final payment is due once your project has been completed. We hope we get a chance to make this right as we are always interested in building long term client relationships!"
"We love the design process and enjoy helping our clients bring idea's to life!"
Greg also made it a point to be thinking ahead, case in point, asking me prior to sheet rocking beginning if I wanted to install a venting pipe from my mechanical room to the outdoors in case I should have to replace my furnace with one of the new high efficiency units. This is something I had not even considered, and with the new law set to go into effect in 2015 regarding the requirements for high efficiency furnaces, he very likely saved me from having to reconstruct a part of the basement in order to install one of these units. I'm very grateful that he brought this to my attention as it probably saved me a nice chunk of change down the road.
The project turned out beautifully, exceeded my expectations. and most importantly within budget. The cabinetry and built in desktop in the office are fantastic, room for two on the desktop, and tons of storage. The family room was also perfection, pre-wired for my home theater, canned lighting with dimming, a ceiling fan, and a beautiful natural cherrywood A/V stand that was designed by and built by the Stonehearth crew. I am very impressed and pleased with how my project turned out and would definitely recommend Greg and the Stonehearth team for any projects that you may be considering!
Greg and George were fantastic to work with. Professional, timely, and extremely reliable!
