"Randy does such a great job with decks, and yours turned out great!"
"[Member Name Removed], Thanks so much for being a great customer! The roof looks great!"
"Thanks so much for the review. I'm especially pleased that even though your project has been done for years you remember us, and it still looks great!"
We were installing a new bathroom shower. There was no existing framing, shower pan, venting or plumbing.
We planned to do the tiling of the shower unit and the floors on our own. Iron River was to frame everything and put in the cement board so we would do the finish.
Our contact drew out a plan with dimensions noting that we would be installing a pocket door and providing our shower faucet hardware.
He also told us they would come out before the job to walk through the details. Unfortunately, this didn't happen and probably led to the issues throughout the construction.
Pipes installed incorrectly
Instead of installing venting pipes and water lines in the wall or ceiling, they installed the venting pipes on the outside of the wall so that there was a 6 foot section of pipe running along the wall. Apparently the plumber had decided we could box it in with sheetrock. I'm not sure about anyone else, but I certainly don't like having a wall that isn't flat. Additionally, this would not have allowed us to put the cabinets back in their place.
This run of pipes inhibited us from being able to install the pocket door that we planned to install. The pipe went through the clearance area for the door.
They had to completely remove this and start over to do it correctly putting it into the ceiling.
Plumbing issues
The shower faucet we selected was a faucet that is a spa mounting to the wall. We purchased the unit in advance so it would be available to the contractor and plumber prior to the beginning any work. We let them know where the instructions were so they could see all the fittings. We even measured the boards out so they would know where bracing needed to be installed for support.
I don't think the plumber or contractor ever looked at the unit.
In order to hook up the unit all you needed was a hot and cold line. But they needed to be contained in a water proof box- which we showed to the contractor (Oxbox). They brought the wrong size, 12 inches wide for a shower unit that was only 7 inches wide, it was too big and would have been seen on the outside of the shower unit leaving gaps in the tiling. Not having the correct size box, put a rush on getting the correct one because the inspector was on the way. After trying to explain what they needed and where they could get it at Menards, I went on my own to try to expedite. But this caused them to miss their inspection time.
Additionally, they didn't provide the correct types of fittings, so the unit hoses could not be hooked up. Their solution was to add an extension to the pipe with the right fitting. This added about 1.5" of protrusion from the wall. During mounting of the shower, this pushed out the unit making it near to impossible to fit the shower unit it.
They also didn't put the Oxbox in the correct place, it was too low. Because of this the hoses couldn't reach the hot/cold pipes and we ended up having to re plumb.
Drain issues
The drain doesn't align. It's crooked in the fitting.
Framing issues
The framing required two hole insets for shower soap storage. These were not level and were crooked.
The walls also bowed quite a bit, they were not level at all. It might have been better if Iron River had used some shims to keep the walls smooth.
The material that was used for the concrete board also had large gaps in the seam areas and in some places where the boar was cut, there were rough edges that stood out an 3/4 of an inch from the wall. We had to sand these down in order to be able to lay the tile flat on the wall.
Payment
They were very quick to ask for final payment. As a matter of fact, the plumber left 5 minutes before payment was requested. This gave me no time to review the project as they stood there waiting for a check to be written. It was intimidating.
Overall, I am not impressed and disappointed that this didn't work out. We had to do a lot of finish work we didn't plan for because of their sloppy work. And it was stressful to come home each day to something being wrong, having to call to get it done right. They subcontract their work too, so ask who the sub contractors are going to be and look them up.
If you decide to move forward with these guys- insist on walking them through the project. And plan on being your own GC.
I did let our contact know I was not happy with the project when he emailed me asking for a reference/review, just a short time after the project was complete. I let him know I was not comfortable, felt pressure to pay without time to review and explained the experience that I had was not a good one and that we had to fix their work.
I'm sure Iron River will make some kind of excuses here, but I assure you we were very communicative with them in providing details of the project. There was a drawing done by them, we gave them all the information they needed to be successful, but the chose a lot of short cuts and didn't pay attention. This left us needing to be finish off the details to have it done right.
The good news is that we have been able to fix everything and the bathroom looks beautiful.
"I am very sorry that you feel this way pertaining to your lower level shower installation. I felt I communicated thoroughly with you at least every other day, and asked "what do you think?" You never gave me any indication that you were upset to this extreme. When you had a concern, I addressed it promptly and professionally, through an explanation that you accepted or we corrected. Since the cabinets were removed by you before my plumber came, he wasn't aware that cabinets were going back in. He then thought that he could install the vent line needed on the room side of the drywall, to make it less intrusive to your finished wall, and then frame around it.This was immediately corrected, once explained to him. Remodeling is not a cut and dried process, and there will always be changes and adaptations during the construction phase. We cannot guarantee that it will be a continuously smooth process, however, we can say that we strive to make sure you are happy with the end result. Again, I am saddened about your allegations and had no idea you were upset like this. On the final inspection, I was present to make sure everything passed and you were happy. Since I was already there, and you told me earlier that I could pick up final payment once it passed inspection, I am confused why you think I was like a vulture hovering for final payment. Randy"
"Please note that every single complaint the homeowner has made in this review she says has been completed to her satisfaction. One of the first things that this homeowner said when we met four years ago, and after a tornado had hit her house and she had thrown the two previous contractors off the property, is that she was a very high maintenance, demanding, difficult person. After four years of going the extra mile to help her, we believe we have everything we can to help her. She has written many positive reviews and recommended us multiple times to neighbors and friends for what a great job we have done, how we’ve taken care of her and how she felt she could trust us for the last four years. She has also called us again and again for multiple projects in the last four years. Please also note our other 150+ excellent reviews on the BBB, Google, Guild Quality, Thumbtack and Houzz."
"Thanks so much for your kind words! You did have a HUGE roof, and it was a lot of work. Roof looks gorgeous, and you should be snug and dry for a long time."
After inspecting the roof and interior they suggested that an insurance adjuster be contacted as it appeared to be storm damage.
They gave him an estimate to fix the roof, drywall and carpet replacement.
Both guys went out of their way to accommodate someone who was out of his depth in terms of the repairs.
I've heard nothing but praise for all the work they did.
install in our basement. The company was extremely responsive and sent
our a rep ASAP to check out the space and give us a quote. We were
remodeling the basement and also asked them to removed existing wall
paneling and studs and replace them. We chose to remove the flooring.
They brought the dumpster early so we could fill it with our
construction debris!
Our initial bid was for the window and the
wall framing in the basement. We revised the estimate to include framing
a bedroom and closet space with door frame. Throughout the process, the
carpenter working in the basement was pleasant and professional. The
workers to did the egress window did a great job and even moved the
displaced dirt into the garden area where we'd planned to expand. All
the debris was cleaned up after the work was completed each day.
Most of all, our experience with Rick Tollerud the company rep was a gem to
work with. He is professional, cheerful, helpful and responsive. He was
willing to give us advice on the work we plan to do ourselves and
recommend companies for the work for which we will hire companies
(electrical and heating).
Could not be happier.
