I'm getting my roof and siding replaced and decided it was time to prune back a very large arborvitae that was overlapping the roof and the siding. Found out you can't just prune a shrub this big. Jim offered my some options and I decided to have it cut down. Good thing as we found it the core was rotted. Jim cut it down to about 1/2" about the soil. I also have a beautiful, healthy maple in the front yard that needed to be pruned and shaped. I was amazed by the great job Jim and his crew member did. The tree looks great. They worked quickly and efficiently and cleaned everything up perfectly. We're already talking about some landscaping ideas for next spring that will fill in the space where the old arborvitae stood. I'll definitely hire them again. Great job.

I had multiple conversations before the service, so I would know what to expect.  The service was held on time and all results were as we had discussed them.  Cleanup afterwards was perfect, with not a scrap left behind.    The tree looks great.

Overall very good!  Coming home and seeing the completed work with the landscaping refreshed and the eyesore trees gone was great!  Cleaned up all debris and left with great curb appeal - everything looked very sharp when they were done.
Only disappointment was we wanted the tree stump ground down and they couldn't do that.

Everything went really smooth! Jim had a subcontractor come out and grind two large Silver Maple stumps in my back yard. He also grinded up all of the surface roots. They did a really nice job.

We worked with another tree service in the past for other old willow trees, but this time they were backed up with tree clean-up from a recent storm.  They would not be able to get to our tree for 3 or 4 weeks.  So, we thought we would check into another tree service and thought of Angie's List.  We found Jim Steele Tree Maintenance, Inc on the list with positive remarks and his company was very close to where we live.
Later that day, I contacted Jim and he was able to come out to the house and inspect the tree that evening.  Jim was very professional, inspected the tree and discussed the options we had with the situation.  I found him to be very well informed about his line of work and reasonable in his service pricing.  Recognizing our concern about the tree falling at any time and upcoming storm forecasts, he prioritized the work rearranging some of his lower priority jobs on his schedule for the week.
Just two days later on a Thursday, Jim and his assistant were on the property with the necessary equipment promptly at 8:00 am, working on taking the tree down.  As I casually watched Jim orchestrating the removal of the tree limbs one by one from up in the tree, I was amazed at the safety-conscience, efficiency and pace at which the tree came down.  As large amounts of limbs gathered on the ground, his assistant, between tying off limbs to be cut by Jim, was grinding up all the limbs into their truck.  All without a scratch on the chain-link fence, fire pit and house decking within reach of the towering tree.
The large tree trunk sections were picked up the next day and the yard was cleaned up leaving only the stump.  The stump was ground down the following week, the chips cleared and hauled away. Jim even hauled in some black dirt and spread it over the new flat ground where the massive tree, that we will miss, once stood.  Needless to say, we were very pleased with the prompt and professional service received from Jim Steele Tree Maintenance, Inc.; we recommend their service and will definitely be working with Jim and his crew for our entire tree servicing needs in the future.

Jim has worked at our home on two occasions; in one case, we were having new landscaping and a fence installed, which involved coordinating two other contractors with Jim. Jim did a great  job both times; he's knowledgeable, and he takes the time to discuss and explain his work.

We needed numerous trees removed, including trees inside a fence line that needed to be taken out in pieces rather than simply dropped in one shot.  We were doing this work at the same time as we were doing other landscaping and deck work. The job required all of the contractors working together on schedules.  It also required the tree workers come out a second time after removing most of the trees.  Jim Steele came for an estimate, and he was very helpful in describing options and informing us on the types of trees that were more troublesome in a woodsy environment.  He gave us a couple of estimates depending on the amount of work we wanted done.  The estimates were clear and detailed as to the differences in the scope of the proposals.  When the time came to actually do the work, he got to the job on time and when the schedule of the other contractors required it.  He was clear about how long he expected the job to take, and he completed the work faster than he expected.  When it was time to come back to do the second part of the job, he accommodated us.  The work was just what we asked for, and his communication was great.

Jim Steele is a professional arborist.  I found him on the internet.  He did a big tree removal job for me and he was terrific.  I will use him again if needed and I would highly recommend him to others who need not only a tree trimmer but an arborist whose training includes the beauty and health of trees.  I was amazed watching him high in the branches sometimes standing in his cherry picker and sometimes standing in the crotch of a tree, harnassed always for safety.  He worked slow and methodically for 2 days, tying and leveraging the branches so they would fall exactly where he wanted them to fall. He worked with an assistant who stayed on the ground and helped manage the ropes and the branches as they swung down.  Together they removed 5 black locust trees, 2 that were over 30 feet tall.  He hauled away all the branches and debris.
As for stump removal, Jim recommended another man for that work.  This person, too, was terrific.  He removed the stumps from the trees Jim removed and also 3 existing stumps close to the foundations of house and garage.  He and his son did everything they said they would.  Their work was excellent and they charged a reasonable price.  I would use them again and recommend them to you.  You can get their names from Jim.
The only downside to this project concerned Xcel Energy.  I asked Xcel to trim the branches 15 feet away from the power lines so Jim could safely get up there to do his work.  Xcel scheduled their work twice and twice they failed to show up or even call.  Both of these days Jim had his equipment and crew there ready to move in after Xcel finished.  Xcel was horrible to work with.  They didn't care about anything - me or Jim, his crew, his schedule and loss of time and money.  Xcel didn't even care about the fact the tree branches were resting on power lines and neighborhood kids climbed these trees.
So twice Jim waited and waited and finally left when it was obvious Xcell was a no-show.  Eventually, Xcel did do the trimming.  I have to say, if you have to get Xcel in to trim branches back from power lines, don't expect them to adhere to the dates and times they give you, and don't expect communication from them.  They'll get the job done but they'll do it in their own time, will keep you in the dark, and when you complain will turn and walk away saying over the shoulder, "I don't know anything about that."

We came home from vacation to find major tree limbs down and another big limb balancing waaaaaay up in a big cottonwood. We checked Angie's List and called Jim - he was here that same day. When he and his crew left a short time later, you ould not even tell they'd been here - they took every speck of woodchips and sawdust. They had exactly the right equipment that they needed to get the job done quickly. I recommended him to my mother a couple months later when a mature maple just outside her house was struck by lightning, and my mama (who is not, shall we say, easily impressed) just raved about the work he did. I would wholeheartedly recommend him, and there is no one else we would call if we have further tree service needs.

Initially I wanted to have more of the branches trimmed; however after discussing with Jim, I changed my mind as trimming more wasn't in the best interest in the overall health of the tree.  Both Jim and his assistant arrived on time, he took time to verify the expected work and completely within a few hours and afterwards there was a walk through to explain what was complete.

Arrived on time. Completed work professionally as planned. Jim did the actual trimming himself with an assistant. Appreciated that he wanted to make sure that I would be satisfied with total job. Note: Jim apparently no longer uses an aerial lift as mentioned in Service Information on Angie's List and was unaware of the Angie's List Members 15% coupon if wood chips are left on site.
