Ashco Exteriors Inc

Ashco Exteriors was hired in 2023 to perform roofing repairs on a residential property. The sales efforts were forceful and came to fruition after trespassing on private property and entering through a privacy gate. A 'Work Not Doing' form was completed and provided to Tyler Sandies (sales for Ashco Exteriors). Among the items listed as 'Work Not Doing' is the drip edge on the house. This item is placed first on this list and specifically indicates that the Drip Edge (House) is to be excluded. On 4/2/2024, an email was received from Beth May (Ashco Exteriors) indicating they did in fact replace the drip edge on the house. Per the Minnesota office of the Attorney General, Minnesota law requires contractors to reduce all contracts and change orders to writing and to include the following: 1) A detailed summary of the services to be performed and 2) A description of the specific materials to be used or a list of standard features to be included. Whether or not an item is required by code, a change order must be produced. Ashco Exteriors did not provide or produce a change order as required by Minnesota law. Ashco Exteriors also did not communicate any additional work needed or performed with the property owner, which is also required per Minnesota law. Construction change orders are documents that detail the addition or removal of work from the original scope of a project that was agreed on by the contractor and their client prior to any work being done. A change order must be agreed upon by the two parties relevant to it prior to any action being taken. The party who proposes the change in the contract language in the first place will detail the exact scope change so that they can be signed off on by the other party. If a change order is not produced/provided and agreed upon, and does not clearly state what both parties need to act on and creates a sense of uncertainty and confusion, it makes the contract null and void, per state law. As per Minnesota law, if a homeowner hires a licensed contractor who fails to perform the agreed-upon duties or breaches the contract, the homeowner may take legal action and obtain a judgement against the contractor. Per the laws of the State of Minnesota, Ashco Exteriors is in breach of their own contract. With such, the original contract is null and void, as per the Minnesota office of the Attorney General. Ashco placed my account for collections, then retracted their decision. Several months later, they placed it back through the credit bureaus. Beware of this company. They will place fraudulent information on you and appear to not follow the laws put in place by the State.

Ascho did a great job managing the project as a whole. They worked closely with the insurance adjuster to settle on the price for the damage. The installation of the roof and the windows went off without any problems.

Randy Gordon, the Ashco rep in our area, knocked on the door this summer (8/18) after a recent hailstorm. He asked if I was interested in a roof inspection. I said “of course” as I am a home improvement guy. Randy found hail damage and approached our insurance company on my behalf. The insurance process was simple—-Randy was there for me all the way——and sure enough we had hail damage to roof and gutters! Yesterday (9/18) the crew of nine workers showed up on time and began to tackle my roof. I have a 3200 s/f house with multiple roof levels, and we were expecting rain....I knew this might be a challenge! Well....Oscar and his crew knew exactly how to manage the situation: tear off one roof section at a time and replace that area before moving on, always watching the weather. We got lucky and the project was completed with only a brief shower interruption. The attention to detail was great....the crew worked like they were family, it was like watching a ballet:-) I have construction experience, and I felt the quality of workmanship was excellent. Crew seemed happy and friendly. Cleanup was fine. I would recommend Ashco highly.....in fact I have to many of my neighbors already.......

It went well. Guy stopped by our house after a couple hail storms that caused damage in the entire neighborhood. We were hesitant and not entirely comfortable with the door-to-door storm chaser approach but he walked us through the process, was very helpful in answering our questions and we moved forward. He was very helpful in walking us through the insurance process which made it very easy to get going.
Once we had everything arranged with insurance, the roof was replaced quickly. They did a very nice job. The only downside is that I am still finding bits and pieces of roofing material and packaging - but they are very small. In general, they did a good job cleaning up. 
We did opt to have a third party Guy recommended complete the painting on our deck. In retrospect, I wish I had just had the Ashco people take care of that so it would have been done sooner, but in the end, they did a nice job too.

The work on the roof was performed in an acceptable manner but there was some delay in resolving issues.

Ashco knocked on our door and offered to examine roof for hail damage and help handle the insurance claim if damage was found. As we used to be property insurance agents we were pretty sure they would find hail damage as we had owned the house 10 years and experienced several hail storms. After they submitted estimate, we filed a claim with American Family, our insurer. Their adjuster confirmed the damage and said he was familiar with Ashco's work and had no criticisms. Ashco also advised that our city code required a better shield than the adjuster had included in his figures and that was corrected. (Our house sits on a street that divides two cities so there is often confusion.)

Ashco scheduled the work with us for a Saturday when we could be home. The work was performed by a subcontractor. They showed up on time, completed the work in one day, were respectful, and thorough. They did try to protect my plants along the foundation but I won't know the extent of success or failure on those efforts until next spring.

Our neighbor, who performs a lot of repair / remodel / replacement work in our neighborhood, happened to be working on the house across the street and commented that he had observed the crew all day and was very impressed with their work. Our neighbor is extremely meticulous in his work and is not easily impressed so I passed this compliment on to Ashco.

The final invoice was accurate and included the reduction for not replacing the gutters. We felt our gutters were in good shape and did not want to paint new gutters to match our house. We also chose not to contract to comb the air conditioning unit although that had been included in the insurance adjuster's estimate.

There were areas where Ashco could improve their customer service. The final invoice was not itemized. I had to request a breakdown of costs to confirm it matched the work performed. There were no discrepancies but I felt I shouldn't have had to ask for an itemized invoice. Also, they could improve on communication between their main office, the project coordinator, and the scheduler. I had been very clear that we were going through a family crisis and yet, even after they were told I was attending my sister's funeral, they called trying to schedule the job while I was at the funeral. There was definitely a breakdown in the chain of communication which is why I gave them a and quot;Band quot; for professionalism as well as for having to request an itemized final invoice.

But they did perform the work and even re roofed our crawl-space access cover without charge. Overall, I'm very satisfied with their service and would highly recommend their work.

A part of it was covered under insurance. The gutters never worked ever. I called them for a year now and they haven’t been back to fix it. The claim was done in the summer, however, they did not start work until the winter, and they shouldn't do that. The paper work and everything they did was very slow, I had to wait and wait. They came and asked me if there was hail damage in June 2010, they inspected it in October 2010, and they finally did it in November. I kept calling, and calling them and talked to the guys that put in the gutters and they kept saying they will come but they never showed up. They actually argued with me and that wasn’t very professional. It didn’t rain after they put it in fall, it snowed, and when the next spring came, the gutters leaked all over the place really bad. I would never use them ever. I even called a person named Greg from their customer service yesterday and complained about my shingles. He said he will talk to somebody about it and call me back but I haven’t heard from him so far.

Update: In September, Ashco hired a company to come out and take the old gutters down and put new gutters in. This was done at no charge. However, I'm leaving the review the same, because it took over a year for the company to follow through, which is very unprofessional. I would never use them again.

They did do a good job. I will have to see how the roof holds out in the long run as it's been less than 6 months. I'll update info yearly. The punctuality "C" may have been weather-related. I recommend this company and sales rep. Steve Burham.
