The electrician was very courteous and helpful. We had concerns about how the old box was wired. The box was only a year old and seemed overloaded. He looked it over and gave us a fairly comprehensive answer letting us know he thought it was actually just fine, however was maxed out. We decided to move forward with upgrading because we are adding another air conditioner unit in the spring. He also thought it would address, to a small extent, the lights dimming when the air conditioner compressor comes on. The upgrade has reduced the amount the lights dim. He worked all day on the upgrade. He cleaned up after himself very well. He described the next steps. Here is where some things fell apart a bit. We waited for several weeks for the inspector and utility company to come out and finish the job. The electrician?s office forgot to call the inspector. I only found this out because I called the utility to find out when they would be out. So after a couple of weeks the inspector was out. Once the inspection was done the electrician's office was supposed to fax the permit to the utility to come out and upgrade the service. Again, this didn't happen until I called and got the office to initiate it. The electrician changed the box on July 23rd; the utility company was out to finish the upgrade on Sept 24th. Typical this takes 30 days. I think it comes down to this: it's complicated whose job it is to schedule these things. Each city appears to have different rules, so I've made it my job to be a little more on top of this. I do think the electrician did a great job and would hire him again. The cost was a great value. I?ll just be a little more diligent to follow up on the next steps.
Description of Work: We needed to upgrade our electrical service from 100 to 200 AMP due to adding a/c service to part of home and the current box was maxed out. We saw the deal from Angie's List and thought we'd give them a try. The deal was only to upgrade to 100 AMP, so we knew we would need to upgrade from 'the deal'. The service included changing out the breaker box, adding a surge protector and having the electric company upgrading the wiring to the house.

The electrician added an outlet with an 18 footwire connecting it to an existing outlet. The electrician replaced theceiling light and pull chain and added a wall switch and a 12 foot wire tothis ceiling light. They charged me $98 for an electrical permit for whichBloomington charges only $35.

This project went very well. Our electrician was prompt and courteous, knowledgeable, worked quickly and efficiently, and best of all, used no sales pressure in his offer to survey the rest of our house after the original job was complete. I liked his willingness to teach me. He gave me good advice regarding the smoke and carbon monoxide deterctors. I would definitely recommend this business to friends and family. We felt that the overall cost was money well spent. I am sorry that it's taken me so long to write this review, especially because this business deserves high praise.
Description of Work: Our house was built in 1938 and has a number of problems common to 70+ yr old houses. Using an Angie's List BigDeal coupon, I contacted Randy's Electric to resolve our choice of a single problem in our house. We chose the lighting in our basement laundry room which had had recurrent failures of the two four-foot four-tube fluorescent ceiling lights. We had had to replace the tubes often and the entire fixtures twice due to burned out ballasts. Our electrician was able to diagnose the problem immediately: the rocker switch was not staying firmly in either the on or the off position, allowing low level electricity to flow through the switch at all times. That had caused the ballasts to burn out and shortened the lives of the tubes. He taught me as he worked. In a few minutes, this annoying and possibly hazardous chronic problem was solved. He replaced those two fixtures, all new fluorescent tubes, and a new switch. He then offered to do a survey of the rest of the house, which I accepted. He repaired/replaced other faulty switches and outlets and replaced our smoke and carbon monoxide detectors with much better products than we'd been using. He taught me that the detectors must be replaced every five years, new information to me! He compiled a list of other items that should be addressed soon. He was knowledgeable, used no sales pressure at all, worked quickly, was pleasant and helpful as he worked. I was grateful for his willingness to teach me about what he was doing.

The Angie's deal for $200 dollars worth of service for $70 came at the perfect time since we'd just bought a new chandelier and had decided we also needed to replace our old electrician! We were replacing a traditional round chandelier with a long 5-pendant light chandelier, so it was a little more complicated than the usual chandelier replacement job. Joe was terrific. He was meticulous when it came to making sure both the junction box he ended up having to install and the chandelier were straight. He also was extremely patient and adjusted and readjusted it several times so we could figure out the perfect height. We're thrilled with how it looks, and the total cost without the Angie's deal ($280) would still have been reasonable. We've definitely found our new electrician!

My husband met with the electrician. He was prompt and they talked about why we had a problem with the overhead light tripping the breaker switch. The bulbs had too high of watts and created too much heat which caused the wires to be brittle. I expected something more than taping (we could have done that), but an expert was needed. The electrician did not make sure that the bulbs were changed or check other overhead lights in that or any room. He used the additional time to determine smoke alarm needs, to sell and install. I am satisfied because we needed expert advice, and the additional smoke alarms make the house safer. I am not sure that we would use this service again, but the system doesn't let me say maybe. I am more assertive about work being done and would be sure that I was home next time.
Description of Work: Purchased the $99 Big Deal for Randy's Electric and had quick response. The electrician simply taped the wires for the light with which we had issues. He then looked through the house and sold my husband a couple new smoke detectors and installed them.

Joe came in and looked at existing wiring, identified issues, gave me a detailed quote and helped me with coupons to reduce the costs. Once I okayed the quote, he immediately started working, bought good quality parts and installed all to code. Work was completed very quickly and professionally. You can tell he loves doing electrical work. I will always use Randy's Electrical in the future and recommend them to everyone I know.

The electrician was very professional and was careful with placing our ceiling light. When it was first placed, I noted it wasn't quite straight and the electrician agreed and worked until I was happy - no complaints or attitude and was very professional. I rebuffed the soft sell to install some other electrical work that was obvious that was needed (but we completed ourselves), but would have appreciated not to have had that at all. Overall not a problem, though.

The appointment for today was for 3 o’clock and I took a half of a day off of work. When I got home, the guy was parked outside my driveway. Then, they drove into the driveway. The plan was to come home and get a good detail of what was going to be done. I asked him what time he was supposed to be here and he had no clue. He was here an hour early and I wasn’t really prepared to give great detail and explain what I wanted done. I didn’t have the real specifics yet. I told him what I wanted done and he told me what the deal was and what he was going to do. It was not something that a normal electrician would do. He was going to put an electrical box outside instead of inside the house. He then sold me a surge protector, which was fine because it sounded like a good idea. I also wanted two motion detector lights installed. He put up one and didn’t do the second one. I explained that I didn’t want it installed in a certain place because the tree would turn it on. I took a minute to think about it and came back. He didn’t have the appropriate parts to install the other motion detector light. He was basically here and did about a half an hour worth of work and put up one motion detector light. I feel that I could’ve done it myself in about fifteen minutes. According to the description of the Big Deal, I was supposed to get $200.00 worth of services, and he charged me $485.00 worth of services. He charged me $250.00 for the surge protector, and I was not really happy.
Description of Work: They did not show up for the appointment. Update 9/27/2012: They were supposed to come on the 13th at ten o’clock. I waited until noon and no one showed up. I called them back and rescheduled for today. They installed 1 motion detector light and a surge protector.

Very professional, from beginning contact of company, to the clean work area at the end of this small job. The electrician was on time, and finished the job in about a half hour. The $49 service charge seemed fair considering how far the electrician had to drive (20+ miles). The charge for labor, on paper, was $150. Used a Big Deal, $69 for $200 worth of work.

Brent, the electrican called in the time promised when the appointment was made and arrived shortly. I told him what work I needed and he quoted the price for each. Because this is an older house he advised me of a few things that might happen, such as cracked walls. Everything went smoothly, he expained everything he was doing and why he was doing it. I was very happy with the work done, everything was completed the same day. The amount I was quoted was the amount I paid, even though he ran into a few things that needed some small additional work.

They contacted the electric company to co-ordinate the installation between them and Randy's. Called and made an appointment to come out on that day. Were here on time and did a professional looking job on the new panel. Cleaned up after they were done. We were without power for about 5 to 6 hours which doesn't seem bad for the amount of work that needed to be done.
Description of Work: Bought the Angie's List special to get the electrical panel and whole house surge protection. When they came out, decide to replace our 100 amp panel with a 200 amp panel because the 100 amp was full. Received an estimate to do that including the price of the Angie's list special.

On September 4, 2012, my wife noticed that there was no power in our storage shed where we kept a freezer. I told her to check the breaker in the panel in the garage. She reset the breaker but it kept tripping. That evening I bought a new breaker and put it in. When we came home on Sept 5, 2012, that breaker tripped and kept tripping. I ran a power cord from the freezer to an outlet on the outside of the house to keep power to the freezer. I called Randy?s electric. They told me an electrician would come out on Sept 6, 2012, between 9:00 and 10:00 am. I gave Randy?s my cell phone number. The electrician was to call me when they were on their way. My son who works 2nd shift was home. He would be called to give them access to the house. Late in the morning of Sept 6, 2012, I got a call from an electrician named Joe. He stated that he had been at my house for some time, he didn?t call me first because he had a wrong number, he had my son sign something and he had run diagnostics and found the problem and fixed it. He plugged the freezer back into the outlet in the shed. He got my credit card number and charged me $ 255.75. When my wife and I got home that evening, the circuit breaker had tripped, the power was out at the shed and the freezer was defrosting with a pool of water on the floor. There was no bill left detailing what had been done. I called Randy?s and told them the situation. Later Joe called me. He started badmouthing the person who had wired the shed some ten years earlier. Nothing about why his testing had failed. Randy?s Electric never resolved my electrical issue. I never received a bill itemizing what had been done.

Thank YOU Member for your feedback. In discussing this issue with the electrician, there is more to the story. It seems that there was a thorough diagnosis performed, including running water from the hose for extended period of time to see if he could make the power trip up. As it often happens, there was not tripping up of the power during the time he was there even with water running for over an hour. The badmouthing that you suggested, was a series of respectful questions surrounding the shape of the previous wiring. There were multiple signs that appeared not have been done correctly such as no disconnect, no GFI protection, wires that were bare, poor splicing to name a few. It was not a blame game, but rather a protection concern for you, your family and your home. The electrician offered to come out to your home again, free of charge if you were willing to pull the freezer out so he could get closer to the source. You chose not to move forward with that offer. You are correct, the bill was not left with you and for that we are sorry. The electrician chose not to wake your son up for the third time and didn't think to leave the paperwork behind. Our offer still stands Member. If you are willing to pull the freezer away from the wall we are more than willing to come out and see what else can be done for your intermittent power and there will be no additional charge. Our first concern is for your safety. Please let us know if there is more we can do for you.

Unfortunately, changes in codes since the fusebox was installed wouldn't allow the electrician to swap it out in it's current location. The cost to move the location would have been significant, and because that wasn't what the original coupon covered, they could only offer me a credit, dollar for dollar, of what I had paid for my coupon, toward the work, instead of the theoretical value of the coupon. Luckily, aside from some small confusion about preparing materials for the work, we were able to work out an agreement to not do the work, and Angie's List was able to refund my coupon purchase. Thanks to both Randy's and Angies for their professionalism.

Not very well. When installer arrived, I was told that the special was only for lights below 15ft; however when I called for the appointment, I was told the height was not a problem. I told the installer to leave and I'd call someone else, then he reluctantly went ahead with it after complaining that he might not have a ladder tall enough, etc. etc. Then he said that the last light wasn't wired properly and he "fixed" that for me. After all that, the motion detector doesn't work properly - doesn't go on, then goes on and stays on for days. (The last one did work properly for many years.)

Saw deal on Angies list for $99 to fix one electrical problem. I happened to have 2 outlets without power near each other that I needed fixed. Signed up and received a call from Randy's Electric within a few days. Two men came and after investigating they found the source of the problem. While one man was repairing, one was looking around and said there were things in the garage that wouldn't pass code and he gave me an estimate. I also didn't have enough smoke detectors and CO detectors and they offered to install those. I planned to put the house on the market and knew all this was a good idea. I felt somewhat pushed into spending the $1000.00 though everything was well explained and eventually needed. Since then, my house passed inspection with flying colors. I was left with a vague feeling that they were a bit pushy. I have to say the work was done well, they were considerate about shoe coverings and they were very pleasant to work with.
