Overall, it went fine. We were pleased with the quality of the job.
Description of Work: We used an Angie's list coupon to contract for an electician to change out 4 light fixtures. The electrician arrived on time and did a good job, paying attention to detail. It appears that he was an independent contractor for Randy's. After walking through the work to be done, he asked if we were using a coupon and then wrote the bid. Honestly, it felt as though the total cost that we paid for the work would have been about what we have paid to have had someone else come out absent the coupon.

Overall, I was very pleased with the work. Joe was professional, friendly, and informative. The work was done without any clean-up required of me. The scheduling of the Final inspection was done in a timely manner. I had recently had some bad experiences with other contract jobs, and this encounter was such a relief and so easy and pleasant. I would use Randy's Electric again and would recommend them to others.
Description of Work: I took advantage of an Angie's list deal for a Complete Electrical Panel Swap-out with Free Whole House Surge Protector Installed. My house was built in 1960 and still had the old fuse box. I called Randy's Electric prior to purchasing the deal, explained my situation and asked if this would cover the replacement of that old fuse box. Cindy, at Randy's Electric explained to me that the deal would be good for the replacement of the panel but also warned, that because of the age of the house, there may be additional upgrades needed that would add additional costs. They could send out a representative to estimate the job and I would have the option of accepting the estimate, but if for whatever reason I chose not to accept the estimate, they would refund the price of the Angie's deal coupon. We set up an appointment. On the day of the appointment, Joe showed up promptly at our appointed time. He looked over everything and pointed out where upgrades were required to meet city code. This included needing to replace the outside meter and a new ground from the inside panel to the water meter in the other room. His estimates were reasonable, so I accepted. Although I only expected an estimate that day, Joe had help (Ryan) arriving and they did the work that day. The power needed to shut off for about 5 hours. Joe kept me informed as the power was shut down and then resumed. He reviewed the finished work with me and explained that Randy's Electric would arrange to have the City inspector scheduled for the final inspection.

I thought I needed a new electrical panel installed. I received two estimates to do the job for $2000. After this I saw the Big Deal which advertised a complete electrical panel swap valued at $2000 that they would do for $949. When they came out and looked at it, they told me they could not do the job because they needed a leader switch outside as well as some other things. They said that they would not be able to do the job for the price of the Big Deal. I had two estimates that would do the job for $2000, but they refused to do it and honor the Big Deal. Clearly this is a scam. They were proposing a much smaller job.
Description of Work: I signed up for a Big Deal with them in August.

Response from Randy's Electric
I spoke at length with this customer. He agreed that there was no scam, and that we have better lifetime guarantees than the other contractors that he talked to. He was refunded all his money and was perfectly happy when we were finished on the phone. We believe in giving our customers all the costs up-front and are determined to be the best value in the industry. We never want surprises at the end!

My technician Joe does a great job. He talked me through the process and quoted me a price on the spot when I had them on-site for a previous job. When he came back to do the 2nd job he went right to work and did a great job connecting to the electrical panel and running all new conduit and wiring for 2 new exterior lights. I had also requested brown fixtures to match the outside trim and they were able to find brown options at no extra cost. The lights look and work great and I am very happy with the final look - they did what they could to place the conduit in a less noticeable area. Drilling through the foundation was also done well, with no cracks and only as big a hole as was needed. As a new homeowner of a very old house I was a bit nervous to drill through the foundation but my house was in great hands. They did an excellent job for a fair price. I highly recommend Randy's Electric.
Description of Work: I had Randy's do another project after the first one went so successfully. They installed 2 motion sensing lights for the back and side of my house. Joe, the technician, did excellent work. He was efficient, tidy and installed the lights exactly where I specified, running new conduit lines and carefully attaching them to the exterior of my 100 year old stucco house.

Professional and courteous. Explained during the estimates why certain things would be more costly (i.e. wiring through plaster significantly more expensive than drywall due to restoration to original finish) and showed me where previous work was obviously completed by a non-licensed person as opposed to a true electrician as they never would have done some of the work we reviewed. Although the estimate costs came as a surprise, I would rather they were done correctly and to code; so while I might not do ALL the tasks for which I got estimates, I will definitely consider Randy's for the necessary ones!

Dave arrived the first day, introduced himself, and then made an inspection of the home. He had a list of additional costs and the reason for each and went over them with my mom. He told her the job would require 2 days and which days would be best for her. That day he completed the outside work and part of the inside work. The following day he arrived at the time agreed upon and the work was completed by noon that day. Dave cleaned up everything and left the house in a perfect condition.

The new fan looks/works great. I just had sticker shock from the total cost of a fan/switch replacement.
Description of Work: I had a ceiling fan replaced with a new one using the $69 for $200 of electrical services coupon. There were a few add-on costs: $49/service call fee, $7.95/fuel charge, $20/removal of old fan, $49/install of new switch that came with the ceiling fan. So if I didn't have the coupon, it would have cost me$335.75 to replace one ceiling fan + switch.

I love this company. They are thoughtful, careful, thorough and know what they are doing.
Description of Work: Randy and his team came to our house and checked every wall outlet and the fuse box. They were very fast and very thorough. They gave us recommendations and shared concerns with us. In no way did we ever feel that we were being pressured to buy more services. There were some things that had been installed incorrectly -- or at least not conveniently -- and Randy offered to fix it. It didn't take them long and they did not charge us extra for that. This is the electrician we will call for all our needs from here on out.

Joe showed up on time and we walked through the house and we discussed the jobs. He rebosed by outlet for my water softner in the basement ceiling and made it a GFI outlet. Then we proceeded upstairs and Joe replaced and old light switch. That was all I scheduled. But he looked in the bath room and kitchen and noticed an outlet next to my kitchen sink and suggested it to be a GFI outlet. He gave me an estimate and left it up to me to proceed. No pressure. Since he was here I had Joe replace the outlet. I just felt better to have the outlet replaced. I was always careful when using the outlet so close to water. I'm glad it's replaced. I will use Randy's again.

Brent and his helper arrived right on time with a phone call when they were about 20 minutes away. they put booties on befor eentered. We did a wald through first. Brent pointed out the need for the box extensions and kitchen GFI needs. these are necessary to be up to colde standards. Brent also pointed out that it appeared my electrical box had moisture damage. This is due to a leak that happened in the spring. I had not noticed how corroded it was. I had to contact my association manageent company before proceeding with the replacement. I hope to hire them for this projuect also. Brent pointed out my outdated hardwire smoke alarms. I had him rplace them with new. I ened up spending additional dollars but was happy to do this in order to be up to code. Overall experience was A+ I will definitly hire them again.
Description of Work: I purchased a big deal for replacing up to 25 electrical outlets. they replaced all of my lower level and basement outlets. /the kitchen did not quailfy for standard replacement. Code allows GFI only. also need to install box extensions in my sunroom porch. the big deal was $399.00 Additional cost for kitchen and porch $110.00. I approved these upgrades. Also had them replace two of my hard wire smoke alarns with Combo smoke and C02 alarms.

I bought a Groupon for motion sensor lights online from Randy's Electric. They called and immediately set a time and day for installation. They came when they said they would, installed the lights on the garage, didn't leave a mess and were off to the next customer. I priced the lights in several stores and found them to be high quality and the installation was included in the price. I would certainly call Randy's Electric again if I needed any electrical work done.

I purchased an Angie's "coupon" for discounted services whereby I was entitled to $200 of electrical services for $69. When I called, I asked how services would be billed and was told that services were billed at a flat rate, but was not given details, even though I asked. I was assured, however, that their fees were competitive. My error for trusting this statement! When the electrician arrived, I asked for information on the flat rate for services to be performed. I thought the prices were extremely high, with no breakdown for how complex a project might be. One of the services I requested was rerouting some old wiring; I had this problem once before in my home and knew it took about 5-10 minutes to fix. The electrician told me the charge to diagnose and fix the problem would be a flat fee of $199. I told him I knew what the problem was (no need for diagnosis) and it just needed to be fixed. I explained an electrician had fixed the exact type of problem in the house before in about 5 minutes. The electrician insisted the project would not be that easy and gave me many worst case scenarios about what it might be, and estimated a 2-hour time period to fix the problem. I asked if I got a discounted rate if the problem was as described (no diagnosis involved) and was told no. I was unhappy, but in a bind. I had already purchased the Angie's discount and had a limited time period to get the work done as the house was going on the market for sale shortly. While he was fixing it, he said I needed a new box put in around the light switch (this is the little plastic box that costs about $10 at your local hardware store - he told me the flat rate for the box and installation was $80 (!)). I had raised other objections about their fee schedule by then and noted I would write a review on Angie's so others knew what to expect from the company. In an attempt to satisfy me, he told me he wouldn't charge for the box and installation. (Another issue I raised about fees: I asked if the $199 rate would hold if the problem ended up taking over a day to fix. The answer: probably not, as there would undoubtedly be additional services that would be needed and billed at a flat rate. Harumph! Seemed they wouldn't discount something simple where they knew what the problem was, but were more than ready to increase costs if it was something that took more time. How long did it take to fix the problem? Under ten minutes. What was wrong? Exactly what I told him - the wrong wire had been used to pull wiring from one area to another, cutting off use of a GFI outlet. When I pointed out no diagnosis was involved and asked for a discount, I was told I had to pay the flat rate. The next item we discussed was a a light that wasn't working properly on a ceiling fan. I knew a new light kit would resolve the problem, but hoped it could be fixed instead. Before fixing it, I again was given a flat rate and presented with additional things I needed done. When I heard this, I asked him to simply remove the light kit from the ceiling fan. He went out of his way to tell me what a great deal I was getting as he was doing this project for free. It took under 5 minutes to do. I figured I could sell the house without a light on the fan or ask a friend to put a new light kit on (I prefer not to ask friends to do a lot of work for me and felt I had already asked for a great deal as I prepared for my upcoming move, but asked a friend to do the job - another quick task.) Project 3 was installation of a new light fixture for a flat rate of $74. I said ok. He didn't ask which way I wanted the lights to go (up or down - the box showed the light fixture used both ways) and I had to ask him to change it. If I would have thought about it, I would have told him up front what I wanted. When I asked him to change it, he just looked at me and eventually did it, but not very cheerfully. At the end, I noted how much better off I would have been if they charged by the hour and that I would only use electricians who did so in the future. He told me the flat rate was a better deal as I knew ahead of time what the cost would be. I didn't argue the point of "add on" charges and simply noted that, if someone is doing something hourly and it runs into a lot more time, I can always stop them from continuing at any time, but with a flat rate I'm locked in. He had no reply. I had already written a check for the bill and given it to my Mom to pay him, and had to run out to deal with the landscapers when he left. My Mom told me the bill was on the counter. Not only was the bill there, but he left more promotional material (two cards, small brochure, flyer, and pen) than anyone I had every hired had left for me (my thought: save your money and lower your rates). With this material was something I really didn't care for: it was a document that said on the outside, "Ask me about my faith" - on the inside, it professed Randy's (company owner's) or the electrician's Christian beliefs (can't remember). Some people might not mind this, but I found it inappropriate. The company had no idea if I was Christian, Jewish, Muslim, or a member of some other religion - or atheist. Still, here was this piece of arguably propaganda left in my home because I hired this company. Here are the good points: they arrived on time. Their receptionist was friendly. The electrician was neat and friendly when he arrived, although less friendly by the time he left. He did try to make up for the high pricing on the $199 charge by doing some work for less or free, but the charges for these items were likewise quite inflated. I felt comfortable with the electrician in my home. The primary problem was with the set fees that the company used and the fact he didn't seem to have any discretion to adjust things. Hope this information is helpful.
Description of Work: Reconnect wiring that was improperly routed by third party when exterior light was installed, remove light kit from ceiling fan, and install new bathroom light fixture. All of this work, taken together, took less than 30 minutes. I had purchased an Angie's coupon for $200 worth of electrical services for $69 (approx) and paid an additional $74 (approx), so the true cost of services rendered was really $274, although due to Angie's deal, I paid about $150.
