Install 4 can lights in an upstairs bedroom. Sounds pretty straightforward. To his credit the guy was very good and professional and upfront about the pricing structure. The work done was done well and in good time and he cleaned up after himself. No complaints at all about the quality. They bid out their work on a per piece basis though. Sounds nice, honest even. But it was after the 90 minutes of work and installed 4 can lights I developed a serious case of buyers remorse. Never saw a cost on the can lights and bulbs they supplied. For the sake of argument lets say they charged me $50 per light and bulb. That would be high but livable. It was the realization that I spent $700 for 90 minutes labor that had me regretting my "deal". I'm fairly certain I could have found an electrician that works for less that $467 an hour. If price is no object at all these are your guys!

OK. Disappointing that I couldn't have just a quick fix with lights replaced! Not worth explaining "from start to finish" because this was a different kind of issue, not a service-related problem.
Description of Work: Unfortunately, the electrical job I purchased to have two lights/fans installed in my kitchen and bathroom ended up being extremely expensive because of some old preexisting wiring issues. The bathroom replacement was a quick job. However, the kitchen fan/light could not be placed without a tremendous amount of work to get the wiring to code. What I can say re: the value is that the electrician told me he would be unable to do any work without correcting the dangerous preexisting issue. The company worked with me to arrange a payment plan so that I can afford to pay it over several months.

Electrical service was very good but in order to add service to the microwave above stove had to drill holes in the sheet rock ceiling. And left without repairing the holes. Now we have holes in the ceiling which are unsightly. It has left a very bad taste in our mouth for their service.
Description of Work: Need a few new outlets and repairs to kitchen outlets. Add microwave above stove. Had to be wired. Required service from the main electrical source. Had to drill holes in ceiling. That is when the repair went south. Hated the holes in the ceiling. Electrical work was fine.

I spoke with this member and found that he knew ahead of time that holes would be made to do the work and that we don't do the repairs...It costs less for people to repair it themselves or find someone who could. I sent him a couple of excellent plaster repairs specialists.

We purchased this "Big Deal" to repair an outdoor recessed light. The Big Deal was for $200 worth of electrical repair for $69 which should have taken care of the cost of this repair. When the electrician arrived he was told of the issue we were having with the outside light. He then proceeded to explain that he was required to do a full evaluation of the junction box. This extra work added a charge of $199.00 to our bill which "conveniently" took care of our entire "Big Deal". There was absolutely nothing wrong with our junction box and he should have only looked at the light we were having issues with. Not only did we have to pay for the"Big Deal" for $69.00 where we thought we were getting $200 worth of repair, we also had to pay an additional $55.75. To us, this seems very unfair and not a good way to offer a "deal" through Angie's List.. This cannot be considered a "Big Deal"..........it was a "Bad Deal".
Description of Work: The service was for the possible repair of an outside recessed light box. As it turns out, there was nothing wrong with the recessed light box . The only issue was with the light bulb itself. It was determined that the current light bulb was not the correct size for the recessed light so it was replaced with the correct one. The electrician also performed a junction box evaluation which was not requested.

I was completely satisfied with the work and the price. The electrician (Dave) was professional and courteous. He was careful to keep a clean workspace, and cleaned up after the work was done. He quickly diagnosed and fixed the original problem, and after I brought up some of the other issues I was having, he did that work as well, even going out to buy the new light fixtures so I didn't have to. He ended up spending a lot of time at my house to make sure everything was done properly. Dave asked about the age of my smoke detectors, and after I had indicated they were over 15 years old and weren't working as well as they should, he suggested they be replaced, but wasn't pushy at all about it. Overall, I was happy with the service Dave provided, and will use Randy's Electric in the future.
Description of Work: I originally hired Randy's to do some rewiring on a bathroom exhaust fan, using one of their Angie's List specials. I ended up having a lot more work done, including installation of multiple new light fixtures, a dimmer switch, and new smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. The electrician gave me what I considered a good price on the extra work that I needed to get done anyways, so I decided to have it all done at once.

Dave and his appritence called one hour ahead of their arrival to remind me that they would be at my home between 0800-0900, when they arrived we went to the basement to discuss the work. Dave reminded me that what I paid for may not be the total fee. After looking at my system in my home (which is 53 years old) inside and outside he gave me an estimate of 1900.00 more that the job would cost me. I agreed to have the work done and the guys went to work. They told me that the job would take 7-8 hours and suggested that I may want to leave the home since it was cold outside and my heat would be turned off. I was gone all afternoon and when I returned I was given the tour of the jobs completed with the new electrical panel, the work on the roof changing out what is connected to my home to the main power outside, the outlets in the basement and the repair of the flourscent light in the basement. The most important thing that happened was knowing that the guys prayed for me before they reached my home and their prayer for me before they left my home. I was extremely pleased with Dave and Bruce their professionalism and effeciency of the work. I did not mind paying the extra because I knew that my electrical system was in bad shape.
Description of Work: My electrical panel was fuses and the guys switched out the fuse box completely, rewired the extension from the home to the main electrical system outside place new outlets in the basement, cleaned up some wires that were unnecessary and repaired a flourscent lamp in the basement

I'm embarassed to say that when I saw the $200 of electric services for only $69 on Angie's List for Randy's Electric, that I did NOT first do my research. I purchased it and later made an appointment. I made an appointment for 1/28/13 but called them on 1/25 and said I'd like to also have them do a dimmer switch for the chandelier and the pendants. The woman said, no problem, and asked if I'd like them to come out right then. She said they had some cancellations and could come out right away. That worked for me so the electrician showed up within the time window given. I had the boxes of the new fixtures opened and the electrician said they were "really good". Then he wrote down the pricing and I was amazed when I saw $715 for hanging the chandelier, hanging the 2 pendants and doing dimmers! You have to understand that this was very straight forward work. I did NOT have any electrical issues whatsoever with the existing light fixtures, they were fully functioning and this house is well maintained, it is not an ancient house. I was just updating and swapping out the old for the new. At the store, the person there said the $200 credit should mostly, if not all, pay for the work. The electrican wrote down that WITHOUT doing the dimmer work, the work would be $479. I knew that the pricing for the dimmer work, was crazy but it had been awhile since I'd had electrical work done so I wasn't entirely sure if $479 was high or not. So I signed the paper and had the electrician hang the 3 new light fixtures. Looking back, I just wish I had told him NO and sent him on his way, and then gotten bids from other electrical companies. The electrician arrived around 12:50 p.m. and left by 2:30 p.m. So we are talking about less than two hours of work - what an exorbitant amount of money for what was done! Especially for functioning outlets where the same is being installed! This house does NOT have electrical problems so his work was really straight forward. When the electrician was waiting for me to write the check, he presented a "Ask Me About My Faith" pamphlet. I told him I'm faith-based. Are they nuts or what?! I don't want to chat about faith with a worker in my home! I'm a christian and have a church I'm really fond of. Randy's Electric is being very unprofessional by handing out stuff about their religious beliefs. It is very out of place, VERY inappropriate. And I have a question for Randy: if he's so religious, why doesn't he give more realistic service costs to his customers? I later checked out on the List what other reviewers are saying about the company and it's not all good things. I read, with a great deal of interest, one review done by people who had Randy's Electric do work on the same day I had my work done. And they had "three light fixtures replaced". But they said they paid $162 which was 93.00 plus the 69.00 paid for the coupon. I emailed Randy Smith on 1/30. I had a response from one of his staff and she said "every home is different, every situation is different". Also said that "with each home, situation and need being unique, it is terribly difficult to compare one appointment to another". I emailed back and said the response was very generic and disappointing. Since Randy's Electric has access to the reviews, they could have told me EXACTLY why my work was far more pricey than the work done at the other person's home. Then Randy emailed and gave his cell phone number and said he would discuss the issues with me, although I had made it clear in my email that I wanted stuff in writing, no phone calls. For the heck of it, I called the Randy's Electric office on 2/6 and pretended to be a prospective customer. I asked how do the charges work? I asked is there a trip charge? Is there an hourly rate? Is there a by the job rate? She said charges are by the job and I asked if the charges are based on how complex or difficult things are. I was not told a firm yes or no but she said "each job, each home is different". I do not recommend Randy's Electric to anyone. They seem to charge what each situation will fork over...what the traffic will bear. I am disappointed that Angie's List even offered this coupon. I hope they do not offer again in the future.

Thank you for your feedback. At the end of the day, it is about choices. As a provider of services, we choose our service system, we chose how to reach out and provide value to customers; we make choices every day to ensure that we are doing what is best for our customers - their safety first and only then for our business itself. We too – are a customer to other vendors. We choose whether or not to purchase a coupon. We choose whether or not to proceed with the work. We choose our reaction to the people we meet, the work that was done and the price that we pay. It is always about choices and the results of the choice we make. It is always interesting to me that as humans, we consider ourselves unique and different until something doesn’t go our way. Then suddenly when we are unhappy with the results of a decision we made and we begin to compare ourselves to others to ensure that we are treated the same. It is then that we make a decision to be satisfied or to become upset and possibly even angry about a decision that we ultimately made. We at Randy’s Electric believe we provide the best value to you. This includes the approach that we take - to the work that we do. We do our best to be upfront with all of our very important customers and want to treat each customer as uniquely as they are personally, and as uniquely as their electrical situation is in their home. We proceeded to do the work based on your decision to have us to so. And now after the fact, you changed your mind. We attempted to have a phone discussion with you and you would not grace us with your time. You preferred to work through this in written format. In good faith, we made multiple attempts to satisfy your needs but to no avail. You chose the route of trapping our call center and pretending to be someone you are not – our response remained consistent. Unfortunately, as hard as we try we are not able to please everyone. In this case, we were obviously not able to take care of your needs to your liking. And for that, we are very sorry.

Overall, Sean did an excellent job explaining options, doing the work, and cleaning up afterwards. He was also very sweet interacting with my 2 and 4 year old grandchildren. I was a little surprised at the cost, but I haven't had electrical work done lately, so maybe I'm just a little out of touch. I was also surprised to be told at the end, politely, that they are a faith based company, and to be offered a piece of religious literature. I think this should have been in the advertising. It made it a little awkward.

I was upset with me as I let myself ask for the extra work involved. I am delighted to have these two projects working. One didn't work right and they returned immediately to correct it. I was surprised at the cost but was told what it would be. I wondered if replacing would have been cheaper.

They arrived on time with everything needed. Walked thru the house and informed me of additional tasks to get up to code. Told me the cost of the additional items. They looked at the electrical panel and showed me two options for replace the current panel. I chose the panel that did not require cutting up the paneling. They informed us that the power would be off for several hours. They completed the work efficiently and also fixed some of my DIY errors. The "additional items" were CO2 and radon alarms. Ours we very old and needed replacing and the additional alarms are required by code now. They finished faster than the time estimated. Randy's Electrical had handled the Permit and set up an appointment with the inspector. His review went without any problems.

Service was prompt, professional and clean. The electrician was efficient and personable. The only shock was the total cost of the work, which was simply more than I had expected and hoped it would be. Still, the work needed to be done and was done well. I would use Randy's Electric again.

Description of Work: I needed to have my electrical panel replaced. The scheduler was very good about returning phone calls, and was easy to reach. The crew showed up on time, answered all my questions and reviewed what they would be doing that day. They were neat, efficient, and courteous. Cheerful too, despite it being a bitterly cold day. I was told in advance what non-electrical work might be needed after the replacement, but this turned out to be much less than anticipated. They capably handled a minor problem I had as well.

Absolutely awful experience and service. They sent a guy who obviously didn't know what he was doing and had 50 reasons why the work couldn't be completed. It was a relatively simple job...." sconces on a living room wall. We purchased '$200' of electrical work with this deal. He ended up quoting us an additional $325 on top of the coupon value. So the job would have ended up being $525 What we were not told was that there was a $50 service call charge and gas money that was taken out of the coupon value before the guy even came into the house. We have had excellent electric work done with a coupon from another provider before and knew what to expect. This was stressful and just a complete waste of time. The guy left with an apologetic "err...maybe you might be able to get some money back...sorry we can't help" Angies list were good and are refunding the deal so no complaints there. Just avoid this company they sent basically a newbie apprentice who didn't know what he was at. Oh...he put in a smoke detector (battery operated) ...something anybody can do in about 5 minutes. ..I don't write bad reviews easily but I just want to save anyone from wasting their time and money. Response to your response: 1) Yes I wasn't home but spoke to the "experienced electrician" at length on the phone at the time. And no..my wife wasn't happy she is just uneasy with telling people what they wont like to hear because she is a first class lady. 2) We offered alternative simpler work but the guy didn't have a clue. A fact we had verified by another company (A+ Rated Angies List) who did 2nd suggested job for less and to perfection. 3) Am more than prepared to add to a coupon value we are not naive but you weren't upfront about your service charge coming out of the coupon and gas money which doesn't leave a heck of a lot for an electricity job. You provided shabby service because you hate coupon jobs and are trying to pin it on us. V typical from sub class providers. ps I am Very Happy.

Response from Randy's Electric
The 'experts' say that it is about 5% of the world that a business can never make happy! It does seem like unhappy people are the ones who post the most...This customer was not even home when our high-trained and experienced journeyman electrician was at his house. His wife was there and was perfectly happy with our service! $69- for $200- worth is exactly what they received....The work they wanted was difficult and would have required most of a day to do, they were told our normal price, then how the discount applies right off the bottom line, but they wanted us to do whatever they asked for the coupon...I'm sorry, every house and every job is different and we can not know without looking how much each thing might cost. I believe it is highly unfair that Angie's List customers can say anything, true or not, with no consequences. I would love to have a third party hear both sides of each and every unhappy customer to see that we went way out of our way to try to make unreasonable people happy. Every home is different, so we offer a coupon for the one thing everyone needs. And some companies are cheaper than others, but cheap isn't excellent, and that is what we are - excellent! There is no other electrical company in the Twin Cities that provides the value we do. We are totally customer focused, and these are the things Angie's List customers have told us are important: -Lifetime Guarantee - Drug-free and back-ground checked - uniformed - ID badges - floor savers - the home cleaner than when we came -financing -"A" rated - answering the phone - doing it right the first time - up-front pricing so you always know the cost before before you go ahead - BBB member with an A rating, and the list goes on.... We are proud of our service and being voted "Best of Maple Grove" and "Best of Hopkins" and winning the "Talk of The Town" awards. And Angie's Super Service award for 6 years running!

The original appointment needed to be cancelled by Randy's as we had a bad snow storm that delayed everything. My appointment was rescheduled by being on call. When an electrician was in the area, he would call. They came out the next day. The electrician was pleasant and professional. Where I was taken back was with the cost of things. There was a trip charge of $49, which right off the bat, brought my services offered to $151. My additional costs to finish all five change-outs was $198, totally $267.00 overall. The electrician was at my home for about an hour.
Description of Work: i purchased an "Angie's Deal" for electrical services. The deal was $69 for $200 of services. I had four 2-prong outlets switched out to 3-prong and one dimmer switch installed. I supplied the outlets and the switch.

when calling for appointment i requested one day of service because if the most important job waould be completed i had some smaller things i wanted done. well when the electrician showed up he said he only had two hours that day and he spent an hour estimating the cost and explaining why he was the best person for the job. since i was in a bind i agreed to the price. i was in a hurry and was willing to to pay for over priced services if they were well done____which i must admit is exactly the case. the electrician went away and then came back two hours later and spent four hours doing the main things professionally. however this is my fifth property and i feel for a fact that i got no more than, at a generous most, 500 dollars in value for 988 dollars _____which by the way was over and above my angies list coupon! i have since had another company in who has conpleted all my requirements for 400 dollars. i think angie should vet these people before allowing them to even offer coupons or say that they are unknowns. ex
Description of Work: when i called to make appointment i was told no hourly price/per job only. this should have been a caution. since having this person in i have had another electricion who did twice the work at half the price. he left twice on other calls and spent lots of time telling me how he as a "master electrician" was worth the extra cost. next guy had to fix his mess!!!

Contacted Randy's about the coupon via email and offered up some options for when they could come. I was contacted the same day with an agreeable date/time. The service tech (Sean) called about an hour before the scheduled time, asking if he could come early. That was fine by me. Sean was professional, cordial and polite. He listened to what I needed done and completed a written quote for me on paper before starting any work. He was obviously an expert at electrical issues and pointed out some things he thought we should be made aware of, without any pressure as to selling us extra services. In addition to the GFI outlet, he disconnected a house-wide intercom system we no longer use, gave us a quote on adding a wall switch for it.. I was impressed with the overall experience and will likely use Randy's Electric again. We have a north-Metro cabin with a variety of electrical problems and they will be my first choice when deciding to do that work.
Description of Work: Purchased an Angie's List deal to get $200 worth of electrical work for $77. That turned out to be replacing a kitchen outlet that was faulty with a GFI protected outlet, also consulting on a minor electrical issue.

Could have been a great experience, but electrician was attempting to charge me for additional work. I had mentioned that my garage power was out and that I thought the problem was from the basement to my garage. Instead of looking at the problem singularly as 'No Power in Garage', they tried to dice it into several problems and charge me for each POTENTIAL problem it could have been. I paid for the 2 hour service call, and after 20-25 minutes of actually work, they stopped and said it would cost more for them to continue. They claimed that they troubleshooted the one circuit leading to my garage and determined there wasn't a problem with that.. Well, clearly they were able to determine that after checking for live wires to garage in the five minutes being there (somehow it took them and additional 20 minutes of running around doing who knows what.. it made no sense after that point). So wouldn't you stop there and tell the customer that they think the problem is something else and focus on that? Of course not. After arguing with the guy for 10 minutes, I finally got him to do a little more checking. Within 5 minutes they determined the whole problem and, thought they didn't fix the problem (which understandably would cost more), they turned off the bad circuit which allowed me to use my garage power again. When running 'specials' such as yours, perhaps you should explain to the customer that 1 hour of your 'service' call is for gas and travel expenditures which was promptly detailed to me by your electrician. Also, be more clear in your ads.. define what 1 troubleshooted problem is, define that gas/travel is part of the cost. I'm a very smart and savvy guy and I definitely felt like an attempt to take advantage of me occurred. Thanks for troubleshooting my problem; it was well worth the $99 I paid. Unfortunately, we could have started a much better relationship with a different approach.

Joe was fantastic. He was very courteous and professional to work with. We will definitely ask for him next time we have any electrician needs!
Description of Work: Joe from Randy's Electric came out to the house to install several fixtures we had purchased, including 2 big chandeliers that we were not comfortable doing ourselves. This installation was covered in the Big Deal we had purchased (work up to $200). We also had Joe add in another outlet for media next to our fireplace. This was an additional fee on top of the Big Deal we purchased, and Joe provided an estimate and completed during the same visit we had originally scheduled.

They were on time, but did 2 things I hate. To tell me what’s wrong with my house when I didn’t ask. They handed me a religious pamphlet and wanted to pray when the work was done.
Description of Work: They installed light, new outlet (which he said wasn’t up to code but who knows), replaced smoke detectors (once again he said they needed to be replaced.)

When the electrician arrived, I told him what I hoped to have done, showed him the whereabouts of the house's electric box and the alarms, light switch for the dining room and outdoor lights I had purchased. I was given the $650 estimate. I asked what part of that was the $200 worth of value for which I paid.. His response gave me no clarity, however, since I needed to have the work done, I told him to go ahead. with it.. He installed what alarms of mine he could use plus two combination ones he had in his truck. My light switch was installed in the dining room . He couldn't use my outdoor light, but had one in the truck he put up on the garage. I would have appreciated learning more about that light, been shown how it worked and had explained why he taped over the light switch. That didn't happen. I paid the bill, received a receipt and he was gone. The electrician was kind, courteous and efficient. Whatever difficulties we had were in communication. I would have appreciated a clear explanation of the charges as well as how the yard light worked. Perhaps I expected too much.
Description of Work: Installation of 4 smoke/CO2 detectors; replacement of a dining room light socket; put new bulb in garage; replacement of an outdoor garage light.
