Had a spring break on my 2 car garage. Entered my info on Angie's List and was contacted by Jacob in approximately 30 seconds. Was quoted a price to replace both springs and was told he we be there in 30 minutes (from clear across the metro, at 7:30pm at night!). He did in fact make it to my home in 30 minutes and offered me a choice of a 5-year spring (what I currently had), or upgrade to a 10-year spring for $50 more. I chose the 5-year spring and guess what happened? Jacob only had one of them, meaning I really had no other choice but to upgrade. At first blush, this is a typical bait & switch technique, which I pointed out to him. The thing is, I actually believed him, mainly because it was after hours, he had already finished for the day and his supplies (springs, rollers, etc) had run low. He wasn't planning on taking a job at 8:00 at night clear across the metro, but he jumped at the chance nevertheless. Does that make me a sucker? Well, in the big picture, Jacob is a small business owner who is bustin' his chops while doing what he enjoys. He did not charge me separately for a service call, for mileage, or any number of those other hidden fees that certain businesses tend to tack on after they have arrived at your house. I gave Jacob the benefit of the doubt, went with the upgraded springs and had him install new sealed nylon rollers to boot. He agreed to a few other things that I know took money out of his pocket, but made the mandatory spring upgrade a little more bearable. In the end, Jacob was extremely personable, quick, efficient and probably within the ballpark (price wise) as anyone else. I'd recommend him because I like to support small business owners, he knows his stuff and after 7-8 in the business he is still very eager and motivated to fix your garage door and get you back up and running as quickly as possible. Give him a try!
