This should have been a hint for us to get out, but we didn't want to find another contractor and go through the insurance process again. The next thing is we noticed our tools disappearing. We thought it was a mistake. It is reasonable that tools could get mixed up and we called Doug to report it, but then other things started happening. First, they used our $600 Dyson vacuum cleaner to suck up all of the construction dust and broke it. Doug said he would repair it and he did so we chalked it up to a mistake by one of his subcontractors, and gave him the benefit of the doubt again. Next, our retro styled bluetooth radio disappeared. This was not a mistake and was blatant theft by one of his guys. After this happened we called another contractor to inspect the work he was paid for and discovered a ton of issues. We had a sawed through pipe, damaged furniture, new damage that required rework by the painter, broken toilet, and only one can of spray foam insulation applied incorrectly when we paid for two.
At this point it is November and half of the property is without heat with winter approaching and I have to call someone else. I called the MN department of labor and industry on this guy and am pursuing a civil suit, but I wanted to put this out there in case anyone is considering using this business. Save yourself the trouble and don't make the same mistake we did.
