Auto Sales
The vehicle was on the dealer's lot for several months with a chip in the windshield. The previous owner, a friend of mine, had already allowed the dealership to make a claim to the insurance company for windshield replacement. The chip was still there when I purchased the car, but he negotiated a chip repair.
I checked with the previous owner's insurance agency and my friend, the previous owner, confirmed that the dealership was given a check for the full windshield replacement. I called and said I was aware he was paid for a full windshield replacement. The dealership claimed that he forgot. The insurance company said he did something similar a year before. The dealer said he would do it at his cost in his shop only. The location of this dealership is not geographically convenient for me. I had a local shop do the windshield replacement and mailed the bill to this dealership. He refused and only paid me for the cost that his shop would've charged. He was paid $403.64 by the insurance company and he gave me a credit on the chip repair of $45.00. It seems he originally was going to pocket the other $358.64. He did end up sending me a check for the cost he would have charged in his shop to do the windshield. I look at this as he is still gaining off the insurance claim check as there is about a $60.00 difference between his price and the insurance check. This, to me, seems like insurance fraud.
The second issue is that in negotiating the sale price, we were discussing the numbers and he said he was throwing in a 2 year pre-owned certified maintenance plan with tire rotation, oil changes, inspections, etc. I thought this was a worthwhile deal, but after speaking with another local dealer and There's no reason to use this plan as a negotiation tool, because it wouldn't be worth the wear and tear on the motor.
